Camp Menzies is a beautiful mountain site located in Calaveras
County at a 5,000 foot elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains,
approximately 80 miles east of Stockton. This 175-acre camp features
six living units, separate swimming and canoeing areas, hiking
trails, a meadow, craft and nature centers, and open-air dining. Staff
and campers sleep under the stars, on wooden platforms with canvas
tent covers, or in sleeping cabins. Girls also have the option of bringing their
own tent.
Any girl entering 2nd grade and older may attend Camp Menzies.
Acceptance and participation in the camping programs are the same
for everyone without regard to race, color, national origin or disability,
providing all program requirements are met. Girls can even bring a
friend along to camp. For girls not already registered as a Girl Scout
by February 1, 2010, an additional $12 fee will be charged.
At Camp Menzies, campers live in “units”
with girls their own age who have registered
for the same program. Programs range from
a sampling of camp activities found in our
“Forest Friends” or “Sierra Safari” programs,
to specialty programs such as horseback
riding or backpacking. Each unit (girls and
staff together) plans their own schedule of
activities for each session. Most activities will
relate to the program for which a camper has
registered. There’s also plenty of time to enjoy
other fun activities such as cookouts, making
crafts, songs, games, stargazing, hikes and
making new friends. Special all-camp events
like campfires, theme meals, carnivals, talent
shows, or other all-camp programs that bring
everyone together will be held throughout the
session.
Camp Menzies offers a variety of overnight
sessions ranging from four to ten days. The
well-rounded program is based on Girl Scout
philosophy and is appropriate to the age,
interests and abilities of campers. Camp
Menzies consistently maintains high
standards for the health and safety of
the campers and is accredited by the
American Camp Association.
Camp offers girls the opportunity to
have fun, grow and experience new and
exciting things. At camp girls can be
leaders among their peers, learn new
skills, enhance their self-esteem, learn
to work with young adults and develop
long-lasting values, all while enjoying
the great outdoors.

About Camp Menzies
What is included in the camp fees?
All camp fees include: supervision and instruction from
trained staff, program activities, transportation, sickness/
accident insurance, camp T-shirt, patch, group photo,
daily meals, snacks and a one-hour horseback riding
session.
Is transportation available to and from camp?
Bus transportation is available from Sacramento,
Modesto, Stockton, and Angels Camp. Travel to and
from pickup points is the family’s responsibility.
What health and safety standards are maintained at
Camp Menzies?
Camps must meet established standards for health
and safety, site, program and personnel, which are set
by state and local governments and Girl Scouts of
the U.S.A. The camp staff is also trained in safety and
emergency procedures.
What is ACA?
Camp Menzies is a member of the
American Camping Association
(ACA). Every three years, a team
of ACA officials, who are camping
professionals, visit the camp to evaluate compliance
with the high standards set by a national ACA standards
board. ACA standards address the camp’s practices,
policies, and procedures as they relate to personnel,
program, administration, and site and facilities. Camp
Menzies was visited in the summer of 2007 and our
accreditation was renewed. Only camps that are
accredited may bear the American Camp Association
accredited seal.
What are the counselors like?
Camp staff members are enthusiastic, talented and
caring adults, who are selected on the basis of their
experience, ability to serve as role models and their
genuine desire to work with children. The ratio of
counselors to girls varies with the age of the campers.
Camp units with younger girls have the greatest ratio of
counselors to campers.
includes activity programming and outdoor skills,
songs, games, first aid and safety, team building, age level
characteristics, how to deal with homesickness, and
more. Staff who supervise high adventure activities are
required to have additional training and qualifications.
Where do girls sleep?
Sleeping arrangements vary, depending on the camp
program you choose. Campers sleep on metal beds
with mattresses either: under the stars; on a wooden
platform with a canvas cover; or, in a sleeping cabin with
solid walls, roof and screened windows. Campers who
choose a program with “sleep under the stars” may
bring their own tent from home.
Can my daughter be in the same unit as her friends?
Prior to camp placement your daughter may request to
be with one special friend in the same unit and program,
if her friend is about the same age and ability. To be
considered for the same unit, both girls must request
each other and the registration forms need to be mailed
in the same envelope. Girls requesting a buddy must
mail or fax in their forms together, you cannot request
buddies when your register online. If your friend is not
a currently registered Girl Scout she can still join you
at camp if she completes a registration form and pays
an additional $12 fee. After placement, if two or more
friends are attending the same session and program
together, parents can request that they be placed in the
same tent using the Parent Letter to the Counselors which
is included in the camp information packet.
Can I visit the camp?
We invite you to attend our Open House on Saturday,
June 12, when both campers and their parents can visit
the camp, tour the facility, and meet staff who will be
working there. The Camp Director will be there to
answer any questions you may have.
What training does camp staff receive?
Camp staff receives extensive on-site training
prior to the arrival of all campers. Training

Financial
Assistance
for Resident Camp
The benefits of a camp experience far outweigh the costs.
Financial assistance is limited, but Girl Scouts Heart of Central
California will make every effort to provide enough support so
that no girl misses out on participation in camp due to lack of
funds. If you feel attending camp would be a financial hardship,
please apply for financial assistance. Financial assistance usually
covers a portion of the camp fees. Each request is considered on an individual basis and decisions are based on the girl’s need and the
availability of funds. Girls living within the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California jurisdiction and who are registered as a Girl Scout,
or who want to become a Girl Scout, are eligible to apply. If you live outside the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California jurisdiction
please call your local council for information about their financial assistance form and process.
Financial Assistance Request Guidelines

applications are confidential. Financial assistance is based on need and must be clearly reflected. Your household income must be
verified by attaching a copy of the first page of your most recent California or Federal Tax Return to the financial
assistance request, the form will be returned if verification is not attached. Families are expected to pay as much as they
can toward the cost of the camp. A girl may receive only one financial grant per year to attend resident camp.
How to Apply
Complete the entire financial assistance form. It will be returned or delayed in processing if it is not complete or if verification of
