Dr. Jordan’s Music for Young Voices series (page 13) features high-quality works that take into account the
challenges of teaching and working with adolescent voices.
The Music from Westminster Choral Series, edited by Joe Miller (page 11), and named for the venerable institution
of choral singing, Westminster Choir College of Rider University, features innovative works.
The new GIA Historical Music Series (page 12), edited by Dennis Shrock, focuses on lesser-known and
previously difficult-to-find historical masterpieces drawn from the Renaissance through the Romantic eras.
Evoking Sound: Fundamentals of
Choral Conducting and
Rehearsing ............... 16
I am proud to recommend these exercises to anyone who works with choirs and to introduce this
gifted teacher to a wider American audience. While Sabine is my friend, she is one of my most
valued teachers and mentors. This DVD and exercise book presents not only some of the magical
ways she teaches vocal technique but also how she uses the exercises to connect herself, in a very
human way, to the singers she teaches.
—James Jordan
Frauke Haasemann and her teachings regarding vocal technique have become legendary. Thousands of choral
conductors have benefited from her books and workshops.
Now, her primary student in Europe, Sabine Horstmann, has published and newly recorded her creative exercises
based on the teachings of Frauke Haasemann. On this DVD, Horstmann demonstrates the vocal technique
sequences covered in her book, which in the past have been difficult to convey by just ink and paper. This DVD
provides an overview of choral vocal technique for choirs at any level of development. The sequential exercises
Horstmann demonstrates can serve as the central part of vocal training for any choir.
EVOKINGSOUNDchoralseries
James Jordan, Editor
The Evoking Sound Choral Series presents high-quality editions for accomplished
choirs and includes both sacred and secular choral music. The series represents new
editions of standard repertoire as well as newly composed pieces. Each piece is edited
by Dr. Jordan with singers in mind and includes performance and practice suggestions.
It is our goal that the Evoking Sound Choral Series will not only provide excellent
choral literature for church and performance use, but also provide accessible literature
to choirs that will help to enhance their vocal technique.
James Jordan is considered to be one of the most influential
choral conductors and educators in America. His more than 25
books covering rehearsal and teaching pedagogy, conducting
technique, and the spirituality of musicing, as well as numerous
DVDs and recordings, have brought about far-reaching pedagogical
and philosophical changes not only in choral music but
also in the worlds of orchestral conducting, wind conducting,
piano, and music education. The Choral Journal has described
his writings as “visionary.”
Dr. Jordan is Professor and Senior Conductor at Westminster
Choir College of Rider University, where he conducts the Westminster
Williamson Voices and the Westminster Schola Cantorum, and teaches undergraduate and graduate
choral conducting.
Blake R. Henson has been praised for his music that Gramophone magazine says
“moves from soothing sentiments to more exultant territory with exceptional harmonic
vibrancy; it casts a spell that must be even more thrilling when heard in live
performance,” and the New Jersey Star-Ledger called “powerful and thoughtful at
the same time.”
Dr. Henson’s choral works have been performed at ACDA national conventions
The Composer’s Craft
a practical guide for students and teachers
Blake Henson & Gerald Custer
In this ingenious book, award-winning composers and composition teachers Blake
Henson and Gerald Custer take a fresh look at what composers actually do by focusing
on the elements of craft that composers use every day: the manipulation of sound
and silence, gesture and color, text and texture.
In an engaging style that resembles an informal conversation between friends
(which is how this book began), the authors unpack each major aspect of the composer’s
craft, explaining what it is and how it works in straightforward language.
Selected works by master composers—as well as excerpts from music by Henson,
Custer, and a number of student composers—provide concrete illustrations of the
practical concepts described in the text.
Henson and Custer also confront larger questions seldom considered in most books about composers and composing:
Why write music in the first place? Where does inspiration come from? How do you survive writer’s block?
What’s the best way to get published—and how important is it anyway?
Joe Miller, Editor
The Music from Westminster choral series is a collection of choral literature commissioned
by or selected for performance by the choirs at Westminster Choir College of
Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey one of the nation’s foremost centers for the
study and performance of choral music. Editions selected for this series will contain
music for choirs at all levels and all voicings with the hope of introducing or reviving
innovative compositions into the choral literature. The series will also publish materials
in a wide variety of compositional genres.
Joe Miller is conductor of two of America’s most renowned choral ensembles: the
Westminster Choir and the Westminster Symphonic Choir. As director of choral
activities at Westminster Choir College of Rider University (Princeton, NJ), he
oversees an extensive choral program that includes eight ensembles.
Keynote speaker at a recent Chorus America conference, he said “Choral music
in the United States has seen unprecedented growth in the past several decades.
The influence of our past leaders is part of our fabric, but we must seize this time
to create a new vision based on the foundation that has been laid before us. We
must keep the traditions but be willing to change in order to build a vision for
the future.”
Joe Miller earned his masters and doctorate in choral conducting from the College-Conservatory
of Music, University of Cincinnati. He received his Bachelors in Music Education and Voice
from the University of Tennessee.
choralseries
Dennis Shrock, Editor
The GIA Historical Music Series, edited by Dennis Shrock, presents repertoire suitable
for performance by public school, college and university, church, and community
ensembles, with the purpose of making available to today’s conductors lesser-known
and previously difficult-to-procure historical masterpieces. The music, drawn from the
Renaissance through the Romantic eras, is in performance editions based on the most
current and rigorous scholarly research. The musical scores reflect original intent of
notation, with all editorial markings and emendations clearly identified as such. In
addition, preface material accompanying the music contains literal translations of foreign
language texts and information regarding the lives of the composers, genres, and
relevant performance practices.
Performance Practices in the Baroque Era
Dennis Shrock
The Baroque era, stretching from 1600 to the 1750s, is a truly beloved time in the
history of classical music, featuring works of Bach, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, and many
more. In this remarkable book, a companion to Performance Practices in the Classical
Era, noted scholar and choral conductor Dennis Shrock brings together in one place
treatises, primers, tutorials, letters, prefaces, and essays from the period to paint a detailed
and informative portrait of this wonderful music as it was originally intended
and experienced.
G-8470 Hardbound.......................................... $44.95
The Classical era, from 1751 to the 1830s and beyond, is one of the most revolutionary
and creative times in the history of music. However, critical details about the
performance of music during this extraordinary time have too often been lost to generations
of re-interpretation, opinionated colorings, and changes in fashion and taste.
In this remarkable volume, noted scholar and choral conductor Dennis Shrock
brings together in one place writings from more than 100 Classical-era authors and
composers about performance practices of music during their time.
The Musician’s Walk
James Jordan
In The Musician’s Walk, Jordan confronts the ethical questions musicians face in the
course of their work.
The ethical “walk” musicians take is like a journey through a labyrinth—as we walk
toward the center, turns and challenges confront us. When we are open to changes in
our course, we can move closer to the center of the labyrinth, closer to that core musical
experience.
visual art, Jordan challenges all artists to share themselves with their audience and fellow
artists, thereby creating a more personal and beautiful body of work.
