Why Greater
Fort Lauderdale
Life is less taxing in Greater Fort Lauderdale – for many reasons.
A high quality of life, a large pool of skilled workers and one of
the most competitive tax climates in America make Greater Fort
Lauderdale one of the world’s most attractive business locations.
Why GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE
Today, Greater Fort Lauderdale (metropolitan
Broward County) is home to an estimated 150
corporate headquarters operations, including
two Fortune 1000 companies and ten with
revenues of more than $1 billion.

It is the
geographic and business center of South
Florida, the largest metropolitan region in the
Southeast United States.
its outstanding talent, its business-friendly
policies and its welcoming spirit,” said Mike
Jackson, chairman and CEO. “That special
combination of factors is a leading reason
why we’ve been able to grow as quickly and
as successfully as we have. This is home for
us, and we’re looking forward to calling it
home for many years to come.”
Here are some of the key reasons major
companies are choosing Greater Fort
Lauderdale/Broward County for their
corporate or regional headquarters:
• A central location of the South Florida
metropolitan statistical area (MSA), the
largest in the Southeast with a population of
International companies appreciate Greater
Fort Lauderdale’s strategic location and
convenient access to global markets.
Technology companies, manufacturers,
retailers, distributors and service companies
take advantage of the region’s large pool of
skilled, college-educated workers.
In the cloud computing/mobile technology
sector alone, Motorola, Foxconn, General
Dynamics C4 Systems, and Research in
Motion are among the companies that have
expanded their Broward operations or
chosen the Greater Fort Lauderdale area for
new facilities.
For executives and corporate employees,
Greater Fort Lauderdale offers a high quality
of life, including a wide array of housing
choices, excellent schools, and year-round
golf, boating and other outdoor activities.
It’s a great place to build a company, raise a
family and enjoy all the good things in life.
To top it off, the Tax Foundation’s annual State
Business Tax Climate Index has ranked the
State of Florida fifth in the nation for “taxfriendliness”
to business for the last six years.
An Ideal Business Location
AutoNation, the largest U.S. automotive
retailer, is proud to have its corporate
headquarters in Greater Fort Lauderdale.
High National Rankings
Greater Fort Lauderdale continues to be one of the most attractive business locations
in the country, as evidenced by the following recent national rankings.
• Florida ranked 5th in the nation for business-friendly tax systems, according to the Tax
Foundation’s 2010 State Business Tax Climate Index. The index ranks states based on the taxes that
matter most to businesses and business investment: corporate income, individual income, sales,
property and unemployment insurance taxes. Florida received an overall No. 5 ranking, which it has
held since 2006. Also, Florida is among seven states that levy no individual income tax.
• The Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area was the third least-costly place to do business
among 22 U.S. cities or metropolitan areas with populations exceeding 2 million, according to
a recent study by KPMG LLP. Compared with a U.S. index rating of 100, Miami-Fort Lauderdale
has a cost of 93.8 for corporate and IT services, 92.2 for research and development and 97.8 for
manufacturing. The region benefits from low labor and transportation costs, the study said.
• Miami-Fort Lauderdale was ranked 7th among the “Nation’s Best Places to Start a Small
Business” (Bizjournals, 2010).
• Greater Fort Lauderdale’s JM Family Enterprises and Balfour Beatty Construction were named to
Fortune magazine’s 2010 list of “Best Companies to Work for List.”
• Miami-Fort Lauderdale ranks among the nation’s “Top 100 Tech Centers” (Bizjournals, May 2009).
• With 65 percent broadband adoption, 18 broadband providers and 13,403 people per WiFi
hotspot, the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Miami MSA ranks among the most wired broadband areas in
the nation, according to Forbes (March 2010).
• Broward College was ranked No. 3 nationally among top associate’s-degree institutions in
2007-2008, according to Community College Week’s annual survey. The college granted 4,715
associate’s degrees in all disciplines during that period.
• Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs were named “North American Cities of the Future/Top Cities in
North America” by fDi Magazine, (April/May 2009).
Why GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE
over 5.4 million.
• A broad based and diverse multilingual,
multicultural workforce continuously
enhanced through education of 350,000
college students each year.
• Access to both domestic and international
markets with three airports in close
proximity, including convenient service to
Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.
• A deep and diversified pool of IT talent as
well as state-of-the-art telecommunications
infrastructure, including one of the world’s few
Network Access Points (NAP of the Americas).
• Highly ranked public and private schools,
colleges and universities.
• A plentiful inventory of reasonably priced,
high-quality executive housing.
• Five professional sports teams in the
region covering baseball, basketball,
football, hockey and soccer.
• Year-round outdoor recreation in a
highly favorable climate.
Regional Cooperation
South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward and
Palm Beach Counties) has been designated
a “megaregion of the future” and a driver of
future U.S. economic growth. In an April
2009 special section, “South Florida: Where
Innovation, Creativity, Education and Global
Access Meet,” Inc. magazine called the region
“one of the most connected places on earth.”
The Inc. article cited South Florida’s
transportation connections and deep
business and cultural ties to Latin America,
the Caribbean, and Europe. “Companies
that do business internationally particularly
covet the area’s skilled, multi-cultural
workforce,” said the article. “Altogether, the
region’s growing bioscience cluster, thriving
industries, international population, and
popularity as a destination make it a dense,
active business community.”
Overall, South Florida is the 7th largest
metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the
nation with 5.4 million residents – roughly
one-third of Florida’s total population.
Approximately 60 percent of the population is
in the prime working ages.
South Florida business and community
leaders work together to take a regional
approach to economic development. For
example, the Greater Fort Lauderdale
Alliance, the Miami-Dade Beacon Council,
and the Business Development Board of
Palm Beach County jointly developed a
regional marketing campaign called “South
Florida: Your Global Business Connection”
where the South Florida area was marketed
through brochures and DVDs in multiple
languages (English, French, German, Italian
and Spanish).
Recent Locations, Relocations
and Expansions
Greater Fort Lauderdale continues to attract
global, national and regional companies. Here
are some recent examples of companies who
have located, relocated or expanded in the area:
Locations and Relocations
Emerson
Emerson, a diversified global manufacturing
and technology company, recently selected
Sunrise as the site for its Latin American
regional headquarters. Emerson will relocate
more than 50 people who work for its Latin
America corporate office and key businesses
that operate in the region to Lake Shore Plaza
II, Broward County’s first LEED-certified multitenant
office building. Those businesses include
Emerson Process Management, Emerson
Climate Technologies, Emerson Network
Power and Emerson Industrial Automation.
“Latin America is a growth market
opportunity for Emerson and our U.S.-based
executives engage with our customers and
our operations throughout Latin America,”
said Leo Rodriguez, president of Emerson
Latin America. “Consolidating our regional
headquarters at a single site in South
Florida creates cost efficiencies, but just as
importantly it provides Emerson with access
to direct air travel, proximity to a large
number of Latin America-related companies
and branch offices, an opportunity to enhance
collaboration among our businesses, and the
availability of a multilingual workforce.”
The Wendy’s Company
The Wendy’s Company is locating its South
Florida headquarters, as well as its Latin
American headquarters, in a new class A
office building in Sunrise. The company has
leased the entire top two floors of the building,
comprising approximately 11,000 square feet.
The facility also serves as an executive training
center that will accommodate international
and out-of-area visitors.
Ray Ferrero Jr., Greater Fort Lauderdale
Alliance CEO Council chairman and
chancellor of Nova Southeastern University,
said, “We are pleased that Wendy’s has chosen
to bring its Latin American and Florida
corporate headquarters to Sunrise and
welcome them to the Greater Fort Lauderdale’s
area complement of over 150 corporate and
international regional headquarter operations.”
CROMA Pharmaceuticals
CROMA Pharmaceuticals, an Austrian-based
company involved in the manufacture of
ophthalmology, orthopedics and aesthetics
products, has located a new subsidiary in Fort
Lauderdale. The company is expected to have
ten employees in its first year of operations.
With subsidiaries in Germany, France, Spain,
Poland and Romania and its domestic market
in Austria, CROMA is among the most
successful Austrian pharmaceutical companies.
Private Jet Charter
Private Jet Charter, one of the world’s largest
independent private jet charter brokers and
consultants, established its regional office in
Fort Lauderdale to serve as its charter hub
for the United States and Canada. “Our site
selection process initially focused on Las
Vegas or Chicago, but the presence of the Fort
Lauderdale Executive Airport – one of the
nation’s busiest – and the assistance provided
by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance
CEO Council and City of Fort Lauderdale
Economic Development officials motivated
us that Fort Lauderdale was indeed the right
choice to use as a platform for the entire
North American market,” said founder and
CEO Hugh Courtenay.
The Fort Lauderdale office is the company’s
fifth in its network, complementing locations
in London, Nice, Dubai and Moscow. The
staff will be expanded to six employees in the
next year. Private Jet Charter provides VIP
aircraft, executive jets, helicopter charter,
corporate airliners and dedicated medical
evacuation aircraft.
Expansions
Mako Surgical
Mako Surgical, a medical device company
that markets a robotic arm interactive
orthopedic surgical platform and implants
for minimally invasive orthopedic knee
procedures, will be adding 90 jobs and
making a $1.9 million capital investment. The
company is located in the Town of Davie.
BRS Aerospace
BRS Aerospace, which designs, manufactures
and distributes whole-aircraft emergency
parachute systems for general aviation and
recreational aircraft, is adding 400 jobs and
making a $500,000 capital investment in
Pompano Beach.
Altadis USA
Altadis USA, one of the largest cigar
companies in the U.S., is expanding its 22-
year headquarters presence in Fort Lauderdale
through integrating administrative functions
of a related company, Commonwealth Brands,
located in Bowling Green, KY. Altadis
natural, highly purified marine-based fish oil.
Starmark International
Starmark International, a leading advertising and interactive
marketing firm, has chosen Museum Plaza in Fort Lauderdale as its
agency headquarters location. Peggy Nordeen, Starmark CEO and
past chair of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, commented on
the assistance Starmark received from the Alliance in finding an
appropriate location for its 50-employee headquarters in Broward
County. “Whenever a company determines that it’s time for a
move, there are many considerations on the table. The Alliance has
had significant impact on our organization over the years and once
again supported our efforts in choosing our new location.”
About The Alliance
The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance is Broward County’s
official public/private partnership for economic development.
Its mission is to lead Broward County in building a stronger and
more diverse economy by stimulating the creation of new jobs
and capital investment while facilitating the growth and retention
of businesses in Broward County. Services offered by the Alliance
include assistance with business relocation or expansion and site
selection; incentive programs and information; market research
and serving as a liaison for workforce development between
educational institutions and the business community.
During the past eight years, the Alliance has directly assisted more
than 2,200 companies, resulting in the creation of over 12,000 new
In the past year, more than 100 local
BRAVO program. The visits include
discussions of programs available to
businesses wanting to expand in Broward
and information regarding issues such
as workforce development, international
trade and access to financing. In 2008, the
Minority/Small Business Development
While nearly 90 percent of Broward’s
businesses employ fewer than 25 people,
collectively they constitute the largest
sector of the county’s economy. These
small businesses provide a wide array of
products and services to private and public
customers.
In order to best serve this important group of
businesses, the Alliance is an active member
of many organizations that promote and
assist in the growth of minority and small
businesses in Broward County.
Additionally, each year the Alliance
awards membership scholarships to
minority and women-owned businesses
to engage these emerging companies in
economic development initiatives and
Alliance activities. This is a unique threeyear
program that allows qualified leaders
full membership in the Alliance at a
subsidized and escalating rate.
