History

Since 1923, when the Geelong West Town hall was completed and the plaza

was created to show off the town hall and form a space for people

to gather, there has been an accumulation of infrastructure and plantings.

The original plaza was an open paved area with some trees and greenery

surounding it. Over many years more adhoc designs were installed, levels,

trees, paths changed and changing trends were adopted within the space.

Plaza Upgrade

Concept

Model showing new forecourt with existing memorial, library and town hall.

The proposed concept is based on the original plaza ideal of an

open space in front of the Town hall allowing the heritage building

and memorial to be, once again, the centre of attention. Surrounding

the new open space are trees which will provide shade,

protection and greenery, new furniture, pavements and lighting.

The new unified space and levels will allow for better pedetrian

movement between buildings and street and opportunities

for events, meetings and general quiet reflection.

A

seperate and yet to be funded project will be the reinstatement

of the original marble steps to the

memorial which we have the original plans for.
