HALF PAGE HORIZONTAL AD
“There is nothing traditional about Sharon McNight, and her genius lies in 9.625 X 7.98
the fact that she never performs exactly the same show twice,” says Tony
Marchese, co-owner of The Purple Room with his partner, Mark Van Laanen.
“Each show turns out just a little differently than the other, and we are
thrilled that such a true professional will be gracing our stage.”
McNight made her Broadway debut in 1989 in Starmites, creating the role
of Diva. She received a Tony Award nomination as Best Leading Actress in
a Musical for her performance, and is the recipient of the coveted Theatre
World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Her regional credits include
Amanda McBroom’s Heartbeats at the Pasadena Playhouse. McNight played
the role of Sister Hubert in Nunsense in Los Angeles and in San Francisco,
where she was presented with the Bay Area Critics Circle Award for Best
Performance in a Musical. Her television credits include Seinfeld, Silk
Stalkings, and The Five Mrs. Buchanans. McNight has five solo recordings
to her credit, the most recent being “The Sophie Tucker Songbook,” which
contains music from her one-woman show, based on the life of the first lady
of show business, Miss Sophie Tucker. In addition, she is most noted for
her movie reenactment of The Wizard of Oz and for being one of the few
women to do a true impersonation Bette Davis.
Politics, Peas and Candy Corn – The Art of
Coco Hall
Some times our past crosses with our present. When I was in college,
the rage among co-eds was Vegimals®. These soft sculpture toys were
vegetables and fruits, full of personality and always holding a surprise. My
favorite pea pod even had a cameo in the Toy Story 3 movie. Fast forward
to Highway 62 Tours 2013. A buzz in the art underground network says Coco
Hall is a “must-see”. Buzz was right.
A woman of many talents, she is a parent, sculptor, painter and author. Coco
Hall’s current works are pop-art statement pieces. Working in paper maiche,
ceramics and fabric, Coco’s work is earth-friendly, at times political, but
always reflecting the “do what I love” credo of Coco.
Coco studied abstract sculpture at Bennignton College. There she
discovered politics and the New York art scene. She also found creative
freedom with soft sculpture. Armed soft sculpture and a life long love of
toys, she established Freemountain Toys, home of Vegimals® (1975-1980),
the toys that had filled my dorm room.
By Angela Romeo
Those toys, little pieces of art, still bring a smile to me. Meeting their Creator
bridged my past and present in a sentimental way. Coco’s next stop, however
was the nonsentimental HiBrow® card division of American Greetings’®.
There she worked with the late Tom Wilson Sr., creator of Ziggy®.
She remains politically active working for environmental causes, women’s
rights and animals rights. Coco’s first graphic novel, Ignoring Binky, (2001),
is a political commentary asking the question “(A)re CEOs of mega-corps
really socio-paths?” Her second graphic novel, Elephant Girl, (2009) is the
true story of San Francisco Zoo Indian elephant, Calle. Intertwined with
Calle is the story of a young girl also taken from India as child and brought
to the United States. Elephant Girl is their story of determination to break
chains and return home. This book also reflects Coco’s dedication to freeing
elephants from captivity and her active support of elephant sanctuaries.
Despite her activism and successes, Coco wanted something else. “I move
between Sausalito and Joshua Tree creating art that I like,” she said. “I do
what I love and worry less about people ‘getting’ me.” Giant cheese puffs,
oversized candy corn swaddled in fake fur, and paper maiche rifles wrapped
in organza may be lost on some, but there is no denying that Coco takes
ubiquitous forms and elevates them to things of beauty. “I am inspired by
the culture we live in, the wonderful/horribleness of it, the absurdity of
it, makes me laugh and cry. I reflect the world as I see it. I think that is an
artist’s job,” she said.
Coco is unfazed by critics. “People without ideas don’t know where ideas come
from. They steal ideas. While no one is truly original, I at least try to be.”
Coco Hall doing what she loves: creating art with surprises much like the
Vegimals® I loved in a dorm room a lifetime ago .
Circles and Triangles
By Michael Tapia
Los Feliz, CA. Early November 1997. Early morning, I hear the alarm go off.
My Mom peeks in and says, ”Time to wake up, Michael!.”
I yawn, stretch, and feel the cats jump off the bed. I open my eyes and
my dream slowly begins to fade out. People and objects in my dream
slowly change into Circles and triangles. In a flash, the holographic spin of
multiple forms begin to flow in and out of one another in vivid colors and
hues.
My mother drops me off at the Braille Institute. This morning is my
beginning Braille reading class. I follow the clickity-clack of white canes and
find my way to Mr. Olaf’s Braille Class. There are five of us.
Michael, would you like to read the first line?”
“Sure,” I say, “The first dot is A, two dots are B and three dots are the letter C.”
“Yes, very good.”
I feel a sudden urge to use the men’s room.
“May I be excused to use the restroom?”
“Certainly. Remember,” he says, “the Circle on the door is for the women’s
room and the triangle is for the men’s room.”
I rush out into the hall, my bladder about to burst and find the door.
Funny, I think, no urinals. I find a stall. I do my business and suddenly
hear a woman’s voice.
“Come on, sweet doggie. Momma be right back.”
Oh my God, I realize I’m in the women’s bathroom! I zip up.
I hear her trailing the stalls.
She has a guide dog. She must be total, I think. She knocks on my stall
door.
“Coming out!” I blurt in a high pitch.
She backs up and I’m out of the bathroom like lightning! Next time I’ll
make sure it’s a triangle!
Hello all you
photos:
JOHN HEDGES
FABULOUS people.
Pinkie’s Place
Hello all you FABULOUS people out there. I
hope that today is a beautiful day for you.
There has been so much going on lately. Of
course most of you know that my dear friend Bella da Ball received her,
well deserved, Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. The star is in front
of AZUL, so stop by and see it. You can also stop by AZUL every Tuesday
night to see the Star herself at The Bella da Ball Dinner Revue cabaret.
Just to let you know about our BIG New Years Eve show up here on the
mountain in Idyllwild. The tickets are about half way sold out......so if
you are thinking about coming up to see Bella da Ball and the whole
gang, go online at www.rustictheatre.com or call me at 951-392-0641.
The show will sell out quickly this year.
Well back in the year 2000 I had Lasik surgery done on my eyes. I had
20/20 vision for 12 years then last year things started to get blurry so
I’m back to wearing glasses. But not for long. I will be undergoing Lasik
surgery again on November 22nd. I can hardly wait to be able to see
again without wearing glasses.
If you are into meditating , the practice becomes the thing itself. Doing
it is the benefit. We meditate in order to meditate, not to train for some
spiritual competition. If, for a moment, we are able to calm our restless
mind and still our body, we are at our goal; we are meditating. Even if
we can’t seem to still ourselves, we are at our goal of meditating.
We need to give ourselves credit for our accomplishments. We can be
so focused on striving and becoming that we miss the arrival. We cannot
do better than to be present in this moment. If we are here now, we are
here now. That is everything.
However we choose to meditate, whatever form we use, all we have to
do is practice. Practice without judgement, practice without attachment,
practice with acceptance......
Where will your
next workout be?
ulive.com/5min
I wish you all the best day ever each and every day. Don’t take a moment
for granted as we are not guaranteed the next moment.
Writer/Director/Producer
Del
Shores
to receive first annual
Stanley Kramer
Emerging Artist Award
The Stanley Kramer Film
Festival:
Coming November 15, 2013 –
November 17, 2013
Palm Springs, CA – The Palm
Springs Cultural Center is
pleased to announce that writer/
director/producer, Del Shores
has been selected to be the
recipient of the first annual
Stanley Kramer Emerging Artist
Award at the Stanley Kramer Film
Festival, which debuts this week
at the Camelot Theatres in Palm
Springs. “Del Shores, whose
film, Sordid Lives, played for an
amazing ninety six weeks at the
Camelot Theatres, continues
to honor the Stanley Kramer
tradition of making movies (and
plays) with a social message.”
said Michael C. Green, Managing
Director of The Palm Springs
Cultural Center. “It is our pleasure
to recognize Del for his amazing
body of work.”
Del Shores has written, directed and
produced successfully across studio
and independent film, network and
cable television and regional and
national touring theatre. His career
took off with the play Daddy’s Dyin’
(Who’s Got The Will?) in 1987, which
ran two years, winning many Los
Angeles theatre awards. A movie
version was released in 1990 by
MGM. Sordid Lives, Shores’ fourth
play, opened in LA in 1996 and
ran 13 sold-out months. In 1999,
Shores wrote and directed the film
version of Sordid Lives. Opening
in only eight theatres across the
country, the little film that could
took in nearly two million dollars in
Del was on the cover of LIVE
Magazine in May, 2009. Read the
its limited release. The movie became a cult phenomenon and became the
longest running film in the history of Palm Springs.
In 2003, The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife became
Shores’ most critically acclaimed play. After a six-month sold-out run in LA,
Shores won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle’s Ted Schmitt Award for
Best World Premiere of an Outstanding New Play.
Sordid Lives: The Series, a television series prequel to the film, premiered
on Viacom’s LOGO network in 2008, became LOGO’s biggest hit to date,
and was distributed internationally in seventeen countries. In 2009, Shores
played 34 cities to sold-out houses with his one-man show Del Shores: My
Sordid Life. The world premiere of Shores’ play, Yellow, opened in 2010 to
rave reviews, and won over one hundred Los Angeles theatre awards.
Shores wrote, directed and produced the film version of The Trials and
Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife with the entire original stage cast.
The film adaption, entitled Blues For Willadean, was released in select
theatres in late 2012. In the summer of 2011, Shores took to the road
again, selling out his new stand-up show Del Shores: Sordid Confessions.
His stand-up career continued to explode and he launched his third
national tour in 2012 with Del Shores: Naked. Sordid. Reality. Shores latest
project is the film version of Southern Baptist Sissies. The film saw its Palm
Springs Premiere at Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian
Film Festival this fall, and is currently playing the film festival circuit. It has
won twelve festival awards, seven of them Audience Awards.
“We are thrilled to watch Del’s work and accomplishments continue to grow.”
Michael C. Green added. “He continues to emerge as an artist of great
talent, and people all over the world await his next project with anticipation.”
The Stanley Kramer Film Festival is presented by the Palm Springs
THE ANNUAL SCOTT CARLSON COMMUNITY DINNER:
The Thanksgiving Community Dinner was started by Aids activist Scott
Carlson back in the early 80's to provide a communal gathering for people
living with HIV/AIDS during Thanksgiving to share a meal and spend time
with people who cared. When Scott passed away, the community banned
together and continued this tradition In 2004 The Imperial Court along with
the First Unitarian Unitarian Church, took over the lead role of securing the
continuation of this wonderful tradition and named the event as the Scott
Carlson Thanksgiving Community Dinner in his honor the late co-founder
who was also the founder of Being Alive
This event is supported by so many wonderful businesses within our
community such as The Harvey Milks American Dinner, Osiris Shoes, ICSD,
Walgreens and many others this will mark the 25th Annual Scott Carlson
Thanksgiving Dinner, which will be held at 3909 Center St at the LGBT Center
from 11:30am - 4:00 pm all are welcome this event has grown not just to
the HIV/AIDS community but our Homeless. So come enjoy a warm Holiday
Meal with us.
BLANKETS OF LOVE:
The annual Winter Blanket Drive was started many years ago after a new
report that many deaths among young children and elderly people in Tijuana
were directly attributed to the cold winter months. Currently the blanket
drive also distributes and donated blankets not only in Mexico but also to
the homeless here in San Diego.
As we sit at home in are warm cozy blankets on the couch others are
shivering with cold what can we do you ask well BLANKETS OF LOVE is here,
to learn more about how you can help please visit
http://www.imperialcourtsandiego.com/ and look for Blankets of love.
Till we meet again on the pages of LIVE MAGAZINE
keep smiling.....
America’s most-loved brother-sister performers
share five decades of entertaining
in a non-stop, 90-minute show of live music,
singing and dancing.
Donny and Marie feature some of their chart-topping hits, including:
“Puppy Love,” “Paper Roses,” “Morning Side of the Mountain,”
“I’m Leavin’ it (All) Up To You,” and “Soldier of Love.” This
showcase of unmatched harmonies continues today with their
recent #1, “A Beautiful Life,” from the new duet album, “Donny &
Marie” (2011).
Donny delivers a commanding performance, featuring hits from
his solo career, and an updated hip hop rendition of The Osmond
Brother’s classic “Yo-Yo,” with innovative choreography and
rockin’ vocals, proving why America voted him ABC’s “Dancing
With the Stars” Champion, season nine.
Marie’s country music style is blazing hot with a mash-up of
“These Boots Were Made For Walkin’” and Aerosmith’s “Walk
this Way.” A line dance with 4 muscle-toned cowboys and crystal-
