Fall Success
Q: Duke will head into the spring season following a very successful fall campaign.
Can you talk a little bit about what you saw in the fall and what was different from
the previous fall?
A: The biggest thing that we saw was a difference in our attitude. We really wanted
to focus on building as a team and getting better as a team. One of our big goals
was to try to establish a bond between coaches and players and let our players
know that we care about them as people, not just tennis players.
Q: To what do you attribute the fall’s successes?
The 2007-08 Blue Devils
A: The success of our fall started towards the end of last spring. We wanted to make
sure that the five people that were going to be returning knew that there was going
to be a change in attitude, preparation and overall mindset of our program. I think
the five of them took it to heart that they wanted to return our program to the upper
echelon of college tennis. We had to have a commitment from the five of them before
we could do anything. We knew that they would have passion if we as coaches
challenged them and showed how much we wanted them to succeed.
Q: You hosted the Duke Invitational this past November in Cary, N.C. Do you
see that turning into a bigger, yearly event?
A: We have never hosted anything like that before and I thought it was a good
experience for our players to play some different teams than maybe we wouldn’t
normally play in the fall. To have a Pac 10 team like Oregon come out for the
weekend, it gave us a chance to face different competition. We would definitely like
to do it again and more importantly play it on our campus. We have some of the
best facilities in the country and it would be great to host something like that here.
Springing Forward
Q: Do you see a lot of excitement from the team about the upcoming spring season?
Head Coach: Jamie Ashworth (Maryland, 1994)
Assistant Coach: Kelly Parker (Duke, 2007)
Q&A: Previewing 2008 and Recapping the Fall of 2007
With Head Coach Jamie Ashworth
Team Chemistry
Q: The Duke tennis community is a close-knit family. How do you see this year’s
team getting along and building up team chemistry? How important is team chemistry,
especially on a small team?
A: The team chemistry has been great. In college, tennis and team chemistry can
be hard to have. Some girls come into our program having never been on a team
if any sort; not soccer, not basketball, nothing. So, being on a team is a new thing
for them. This group understands that they are out on the court to represent Duke and
the entire Duke community and they are not just playing for themselves. On a small
team as we have, team chemistry can make or break you. As long as the
communication lines stay open and people trust one another then you can avoid a
lot of the little problems that can come up.
New Faces
Q: Talk a little bit about the freshmen class, which was ranked second-best in the
nation. What specifically do Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka each bring to the table?
A: They have both been outstanding for us this fall. They compliment each other so
well and have really brought a sense of confidence back into our program. They are
both unbelievable competitors and are willing to do whatever it takes to win matches
and help our team win matches. Ellah expects to win every time she walks on the
court and is as determined of a player as we have ever had. Reka honestly is a
nightmare to play against. She makes her opponents work so hard to win points that
most are not willing to pay the price to beat her. I know we as coaches and all of their
teammates are excited to watch them develop over their four years here.
Q: How do the freshmen compliment your returning players?
A: Their personalities are both great. They know when to be serious at practice but
both also know when it is time to laugh, smile, and have a good time. The biggest
way they have complimented our team so far is through their confidence.
A: We have had a lot of success in the time I have been coaching here at Duke
and I can honestly say I have never had a team that is excited about a season as
this team is. They saw this fall that there are going to be a lot of opportunities that
lie ahead and they have been working hard to take advantage when those
opportunities arise.
Q: Talk a little bit about Tara Iyer’s return to Duke and what that addition will provide
for the team. How will her experiences outside of Duke help her contribute to the team?
A: We missed Tara last year and are excited to have her back. She has spent the
last year working hard trying to develop her game. She fits right in with this group
in that she loves to work hard and wants more than anything else to get better. Her
confidence and work ethic are both things that the other seven girls will feed off of.
2

Q: How important was the hiring of Kelly Parker? What advantages does the fact
that she played at Duke give you and your team?
A: Kelly was one of the most important hires I have had to make in my coaching
career here at Duke. I wanted to hire someone that was not only knowledgeable on
the court, but also would be vocal about what she believes. She is a great technician
and a great strategist and had a lot of success as a player. Kelly understands the
history and tradition of our program and was our number one player when we were
ranked number one in country a few years ago. I knew this fall that one of our major
goals would be to establish a winning culture and a winning attitude in our program
and having experienced it as a player here, she was the perfect fit. I could not be
happier with the decision that I made.
Experience and Leadership
Q: Tory Zawacki returns as a fifth-year senior. How will her experiences over her
first four years help the team?
A: Tory has experienced a lot over her four years and has played a role in the
successes we have had. The biggest thing that she can do is try to lead by her
example. She has been through the battles in our conference and knows what to
expect on a daily basis.
Q: Who will you look to for leadership this spring?
A: For the first time in 12 years we decided to have a captain on our team and in the
spring the players voted to name Melissa Mang our captain. She has been a great
fit for this role and has shown that she is willing to do anything for our program. With
this group that we have, all of them can lead in different ways, even the two freshmen.
Facing Tough Competition
Q: Throughout the fall, a lot of the players faced top-ranked. How do you think that
prepares them, especially the younger players, for the strong competition they will
face in the spring?
A: As a team we faced more ranked opponents this fall than we have in any fall that
I can remember. This team needed to know that it can compete with not only the best
players in the country but also the best teams in the country. We had a doubles team
in Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson beat both the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked
players in the country. We had one of our freshmen, Ellah Nze, set a collegiate tennis
record in beating two former NCAA champions in the same day; that was the first
time anyone in college tennis had ever done that. The best preparation for us for the
spring was to try and play the best competition this fall. In talking to everyone on our
team now that the fall is over, we have a great deal of confidence because of that
high level of competition.
Q: Your dual match schedule for 2008 is typical of the Duke program in terms of facing
tough competition. The schedule features 11 teams who were ranked in the top 25
2007-08 Freshman Class
2007 ITA Southeast Region
Doubles Champions
in the 2007 final ITA rankings, and six of those teams were ranked in the top 10.
Can you talk a little bit about the schedule, why you elect to play such elite programs
in the regular season and how that will prepare this team for the post-season?
A: Our schedule is unbelievably tough, but I do think this team is up to the challenge.
If we are going to reach all of our goals we need to compete with the best teams
on a daily basis. I have always felt that the tougher the regular season schedule
we play, the more we will be prepared come NCAA Tournament time.
Competing in the ACC
Q: Including Duke, seven of the 12 ACC teams were ranked in the top 25 at season’s
end in 2007, and Georgia Tech is the reigning NCAA Champion. How beneficial
is it for your team to compete in such a strong conference?
A: When I first started at Duke the ACC was third or fourth in terms of overall strength
in women’s tennis across the country. In the last few years we are now the premier
conference not only to play in, but also to coach in. Every day we have to be prepared
to play a tough match and every day our team knows that they are going to face
great competition. There will be nothing that prepares us better for the NCAA
Tournament than both the ACC schedule and the ACC Tournament.
Q: Do you see the conference shaping up to be just as competitive this year as
it has been in past years? What do you attribute that to?
A: It is going to be even better this year than last year. I attribute a lot of it to the
dedication that other ACC schools have put into women’s tennis. I see it in the
facilities, the support staffs, and especially the coaches. We have a great group of
coaches right now and all want to keep the ACC the toughest conference in the
country.
Home Court Advantage
Q: The 2008 schedule features 12 home matches. Talk about home-court advantage
and how important it is to defend your home courts?
A: It is going to be great having 12 home matches. Hopefully we can get the Duke
and Durham communities behind our program and generate some interest in
women’s tennis. I know our team loves to play in front of a crowd and we have
a great product to come out and watch. Defending our home courts is something
that we always talk about. We want to make Duke the toughest place to play in the
country and hopefully we are on our way to doing that. If we take care of what we
need to in the regular season then we will have the opportunity to play the first two
rounds of the NCAA Tournament at home. If teams know it is a tough place to play
and see that we have done a great job defending our home court throughout the year,
we will have a mental edge in those two matches. Plus, we want to give the people
at Duke and those in the Durham community something exciting and something fun
to watch. People will support a winner.
The 2006-07 campaign saw Duke go 12-10 (5-6 ACC)
and reach the NCAA Tournament for the 18th straight year and
19th time overall. The Blue Devils finished the season with a
national ranking of No. 21, led by sophomore Melissa Mang,
who received All-ACC recognition for the second straight year,
and freshman Amanda Granson, who led the squad in singles
wins (23), dual match victories (15) and ACC triumphs (eight).
Mang combined with senior Daniela Bercek for a No. 15 final
national ranking, as the duo went 15-6 on the year for teambests
in overall wins (15), dual victories (15) and ACC wins
(seven).
Jamie Ashworth
Head Coach
12th Year
Maryland, 1994
One of the winningest women's tennis coaches
in the nation, Jamie Ashworth heads into the 2007-08
season with a young and talented squad as he looks
toward another successful year at the helm of the Blue
Devil program.
Over the last 11 years, Ashworth has led Duke
to a 241-60 (.801) overall and an 81-14 (.853) ACC
mark, while advancing
to the NCAA Final Four
In 2005-06, Ashworth rounded out a decade as the head coach of the women's tennis
program, as his 10th year saw the Blue Devils go 20-8 overall and 9-1 in ACC play. Mang
became the sixth Blue Devil freshman all-time and third under Ashworth (Ansley Cargill, 2001;
Kelly McCain, 2002) to receive ACC Rookie of the Year honors, as she also received All-ACC
accolades along with Bercek and Jackie Carleton. Bercek and Carleton each received bids to
the NCAA Singles Championships and Bercek received her third career All-America nod. The
Blue Devils ended the campaign ranked ninth in the country.
After serving as a Duke assistant coach from 1994-95 through 1996-97, Ashworth took
over the head coaching reigns on March 20, 1997, and paced Duke to a 12-1 overall record and
a 4-0 conference mark to wrap up the season.
In his first full year as a head coach (1997-98), Ashworth led Duke to 27 wins, then a
school record, the school's 11th consecutive ACC regular season and tournament titles, Duke's
best final national ranking at No. 2, its third consecutive Final Four and the program's first
appearance in the NCAA title match.
The 1998-99 season was no letdown as he guided Duke to 27 wins, its 12th consecutive
ACC regular season and tournament titles, its fourth straight Final Four and a final national ranking
of No. 3.
In 1999-2000, Ashworth guided a young Blue Devil team to a 23-6 record, a 13th consecutive
ACC Tournament title and a Sweet 16 NCAA finish. The following campaign (2000-01) saw
Ashworth lead the Blue Devils to 27 victories and an Elite Eight NCAA finish, along with Duke's
14th consecutive ACC Championship and an undefeated 8-0 ACC regular season mark.
In 2001-02, Duke posted a 25-5 overall record and won the ACC regular season title with
an 8-0 mark. In 2002-03, Ashworth led the Blue Devils back to the NCAA Final Four, tied an ACC
record with 30 victories, won the ACC regular season and tournament titles, and claimed the
National Team Indoor Championship. With one of his youngest teams in his coaching history,
Ashworth led Duke to the Elite Eight and a 22-5 mark in 2003-04.
During Ashworth's term as the assistant coach, the Blue Devils recorded a 59-13 overall
record and a perfect 20-0 ACC mark. In his first year as an assistant in1994-95, Duke went 22-
6, advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and finished the year ranked No. 7. In 1995-
96, he helped pace Duke to a 25-4 mark (then a school record for wins in a season), a trip to the
NCAA Final Four and a national ranking of No. 3. In 1996-97, Duke advanced to its second
straight NCAA Final Four, finishing the year third in the nation, once again.
Ashworth has coached 20 different All-ACC selections and 16 different All-America honorees,
as well as four collegiate grand slam champions during his stint with the Blue Devils. That
list that includes four-time All-America and 1998 NCAA singles national champion, Vanessa
Webb, who is Duke tennis' only Honda Award winner and Olympian. Three of Duke's ACC
Rookie of the Year honorees have come under his tenure, as well as two ITA National Rookies
of the Year. Ashworth was named both ACC Coach of the Year and Wilson/ITA Southeast Region
Coach of the Year on two occasions (2001, 2003).
A 1994 speech communication graduate of Maryland, Ashworth was a four-year letterwinner
for the Terrapins and served as a captain of the team his junior and senior years.
A native of Amherst, N.H., Ashworth resides in Durham.
Kelly Parker
Assistant Coach
First Year
Duke, 2007
Kelly Parker joins the Duke women's tennis staff
as an assistant coach for the 2007-08 campaign.
Following a stellar two-year playing career as a
Blue Devil, the Tampa, Fla., native, known in competition
as Kelly McCain, enjoyed a two-year professional
career, having played in tournaments across the globe,
including the all four majors. Parker owns a career-high
ranking of No. 117 in the world and has captured four
professional titles on the ITF Tour - three in singles and one in doubles.
At Duke, Parker garnered All-America honors in 2002 and 2003 and was an All-ACC
selection in each of those years. She became Duke's fifth ACC Rookie of the Year in 2002 and
was selected as ACC Player of the Year in 2003. Parker guided the Blue Devils to conference
championship and regular season titles in 2003, the 2002 regular season title, and Duke's first
National Team Indoor championship in 2003.
After a two-year stint in the professional tennis ranks, Parker returned to Duke in 2005-06
to finish her undergraduate degree and served as an undergraduate assistant coach with the Blue
Devil tennis team during that time. She finished her degree in May of 2007 and served as the head
instructor at the Precision Tennis Academy in Greensboro, N.C., during her return to school.
The former Blue Devil tennis standout was wed to Michael Parker in September of 2007.
The couple resides in Burlington, N.C.
Why Duke?
Melissa Mang
“I chose to come to Duke because of the university’s
outstanding reputation in both academics and athletics.
Duke is unique because it offers a wide spectrum
of opportunities to excel in both education and
athletics while maintaining an encouraging and special
social environment.”
Tory Zawacki
“When I visited Duke, I realized it had everything
to offer for me. Challenging myself both on the court
and off with strong academics and one of the best
teams in the country was something I wanted to do,
and knew I could do at Duke. Most importantly,
spending time with the coaches and girls made me
realize the kind of team I wanted to be a part of and
represent. I love my teammates, my friends and the
opportunities I have at Duke!”
Amanda
Granson
"From the moment I stepped onto campus I knew it
was the place for me, and that was seven years ago.
I visited Duke when my sister Katie played tennis
here and fell in love with the school. Duke’s unique
combination of both excellent academics and athletics
is unparalled.”
Duke Tennis Facilities
Over the past decade, Duke University has invested over $25 million to make
its athletic facilities among the finest in the nation. This commitment is evident in the
changes instituted directly for the men’s tennis team. Duke Athletic Director Joe
Alleva continues to lead the way in providing Duke with top facilities to help studentathletes
stay in peak condition.
Originally completed in the summer of 1987, the Duke Tennis Stadium was
renovated into the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The facility was funded by Merrill
Ambler (pictured below) and features seat-backs for fan seating, a scoreboard, new
court surfaces and restrooms.
In addition to the fine outdoor courts, the Duke athletic department completed the
Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in the winter of 2000. Named after Karl and Alice
Sheffield, the facility features six courts, offices for the coaches, a hall of fame room
and locker rooms. It was awarded the 2000 United States Tennis Association
Outstanding Tennis Facility on February 25, 2001. The Sheffield Indoor Tennis
Center is only the third tennis center in North Carolina to receive the award since
it began in 1981.
The modern training room provides all of the equipment and services necessary
to keep the Duke women’s tennis team healthy and in action. The trainer’s office
is off the main training area, allowing the players convenient access to this care.
The weight room is another extensive area, directed by strength coordinator
Anne Tamporello. The 3,300 square-foot weight room has over three tons of free
weights along with Nautilus, Hydra-Gym and Universal stations.
Debuting in the spring of 1999, the Schwartz-Butters Athletic Center was
completed. It houses the men’s & women’s basketball offices, the new Duke Hall
of Fame, basketball weight room, the Campbell Academic Center and training room
facilities.
Some of the recent additions to the tennis facilities include a new state of the art
Daktronics indoor scoring system. This project, which was installed in the fall of
2006, includes seven wireless scoreboards. There are six individual scoreboards
(one mounted behind each court) that provides the player’s name as well as the
game and set scores. The main scoreboard shows the dual match score and scores
of all six courts. Also the six main outdoor courts have been resurfaced in the US
Open (Duke) blue color.
The Atlantic Coast Conference - A Tradition of Excellence
Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor.
However, in today's intercollegiate athletics, competition has
become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible
to maintain a high level of consistency.
Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in
its 55th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation
as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences
in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers
support it.
Since the league's inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured
105 national championships, including 56 in women's competition and
49 in men's. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC
student-athletes 139 times in men's competition and 86 times in
women's action.
The success of women's tennis in the ACC has been profound
since it became a conference sport in 1983. It reached unprecedented
levels in 2007 with the league sweeping all three NCAA team, singles and doubles
championship titles. Georgia Tech captured the team trophy, while Miami's Audra
Cohen won the singles crown and the doubles championship was claimed by Sara
Anundsen and Jenna Long from North Carolina.
The team and doubles titles were both firsts in the history of ACC tennis. Georgia
Tech became the first school to take home the team championship and it was also
the first NCAA championship in any sport for the Yellow Jackets. North Carolina's
tandem of Anundsen and Long made its mark in the league record books as the first
national doubles champion.
Only the second player in the league to have been tabbed Intercollegiate Tennis
Association National Player of the Year twice in her career, Miami's Cohen became
the third national women's singles champion from the ACC. Duke's Vanessa Webb
was the league's first NCAA individual singles champion in 1998, and the ACC
produced a second national singles champion a few years later in Wake Forest's Bea
Bielik (2002).
Cohen is also among a trio of ACC women's tennis players to have captured the
elite Honda Sports Award. She joined Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller and Duke's
Vanessa Webb, who first earned the honor in 1999. Miami's Cohen (2006-07) and
Georgia Tech's Miller (2005-06) are the league's only two-time recipients of the national
award.
In all, the league boasts five National Players of the Year, four National Rookie
Players of the Year and four annual Honda Sports Award winners.
Over 130 players have earned All-America distinction by the ITA, NCAA or both
organizations, including Duke's Amanda Johnson (2001-04) and Vanessa Webb
(1996-99). Both are the only four-time ITA All-America recipients in ACC women's
tennis history.
ACC women's tennis has been a strong contender in the NCAA Tournament since
1982. The league has been well-represented in the national event in all but two years
(1985 and 1989). An ACC school has advanced to the NCAA semifinals in each
of the last five years, and the league has had at least one team in the quarterfinals
in the last 17 seasons.
For the second straight year, women's tennis matched an all-time high with nine
of its league members qualifying for the NCAA Tournament that included a leaguebest
six teams advancing to the second round. The 2006 campaign was the first time
nine teams went to the national event and it matched that mark again last season.
Junior Melissa Mang has earned All-ACC
honors in each of her two years as a Blue Devil.
The 2006 season marked the first time an ACC team (Miami) advanced to the
NCAA finals since 1998, falling short to No. 1 Stanford. Georgia Tech took it a step
further in 2007 as the Yellow Jackets clinched the first-ever NCAA Women's Tennis
team title for the ACC and the school. Duke was the first league member to make
an appearance in the finals of the national tournament in 1998, the same year the Blue
Devils produced individual singles champion Vanessa Webb.
Women's tennis has also demonstrated success in the classroom with approximately
30 student-athletes receiving Academic All-America citations. In addition, the
league has had 35 tabbed ITA Scholar Athletes.
Duke’s
Vanessa
Webb became
the ACC’s
first women’s
tennis player
to receive the
Honda Sports
Award in 1999.
Duke University was created in 1924 by James
Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington
Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family who
built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture
of tobacco and developed the production
of electricity in the two Carolinas, had long been
interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its
roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when
local Methodist and Quaker communities joined
forces to support a permanent school, which they
named Union Institute. After a brief period as
Normal College (1851-59), the school changed its
name to Trinity College in 1859 and affiliated with
the Methodist Church.
The college moved to Durham in 1892 with
financial assistance from Washington Duke and
the donation of land by Julian S. Carr. In December
1924, the school’s trustees gratefully accepted
the provisions of James B. Duke’s indenture creating
the family philanthropic foundation, The
Duke Endowment, which provided, in part, for
the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.
As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent
both physical and academic expansion. The
original Durham Campus became known as East
Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian
architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and
dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke
Chapel, opened in 1930. Academic expansion of
the university included the establishment of new
graduate and professional schools.
Modern times have seen Duke realize its
founder’s aspirations to become a major center of
learning. The Duke University Medical Center has
achieved international prominence, and many
Duke schools and departments are consistently
ranked among the nation’s best.

The average temperature in
Durham is 59 degrees and
snowfall totals less than
eight inches per year. A
temperate climate and the
unique blend of big-city
activity with an unfrenzied
pace makes Durham a great
place to call home.
The Durham Bulls, Tampa
Bay’s AAA baseball affiliate,
are a popular attraction
among area residents.

In 2002, Employment Review Magazine ranked
“The Triangle” area of Durham, Chapel Hill
and Raleigh as the number one place in
America to live and work. Money Magazine
made the same selection in 1994.
Brightleaf Square, shown
above, in downtown
Durham is a turn-of-thecentury
tobacco warehouse
renovated as a
unique shopping, dining
and entertainment district.
Located in the heart of
North Carolina’s rolling Piedmont
region, Durham stands out as a gem among
southern cities. Through the years, the city has
evolved from a tobacco and textile town into an
international center for medicine, scholarship, biotechnology
and electronics.
Founded in 1853, Durham is widely recognized
for its diversity. Originally a manufacturing
center, the city now is known for excellence in
medicine, education, research and industry. The
wide range of activities available in the area lends
the city a multifaceted appeal that strikes even
first-time visitors.
Durham has a natural appeal as well, characterized
by 98,000 acres of hardwood and evergreen
forests including the only remaining old
growth Piedmont bottomland forests and 7,800
acres of cropland. Hills and dales, meandering
rivers and streams, several lakes, 26 rare plant
species and several rare species of birds and animals
can also be found here.
With 187,000 residents in the one-city county,
Durham is the fourth-largest city in North Carolina.
It is ideally located on the large and small
scale. Within the immediate area it stands as the
pinnacle of the “Triangle” region of North Carolina,
a metropolitan population of 1,000,000
people that includes Chapel Hill to the south and
west and Raleigh, the state capital, to the south
and east. On a regional level, this area is the primary
center of culture, sports, education and government
between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
With excellent sports and cultural activities
in the area, Durham is a fun place to be. People
from all walks of life — academic, industrial, professional,
agricultural — blend to provide a warm,
rich sense of hospitality and diversity.

From the mountains to the west and the beaches of the Atlantic
Ocean to the east, North Carolina’s landscape is as diverse
— and beautiful — as any state in the nation. Millions of
tourists come to North Carolina each year to take advantage
of all the state has to offer.

North Carolina is a state of diversity — diversity
in its population, in its economic production and
in its beautiful scenery. According to the 2000 census,
North Carolina was the home to more than eight
million people of many nationalities.
Known for its major production of tobacco, North
Carolina is also a major producer of textiles and furniture,
fueled by the thousands of acres of forests that
cover the state. Among its other leading products are
broilers, hogs, turkeys, greenhouse products, sweet
potatoes, corn, soybeans, peanuts and eggs. In addition,
there are hundreds of coastal fisheries that yield
shrimp, menhaden and crabs as the primary catches.
The scenery throughout the state is diverse and
beautiful. From the mountains to the west and the
beaches adjoining the Atlantic Ocean to the
east, North Carolina is one of the nation’s
most picturesque states. Some of the major
attractions in the state include the Great
Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge National
Parkway, the Cape Hatteras and
Cape Lookout National Seashores, the
Wright Brothers National Memorial at
Kitty Hawk, Guilford Courthouse and
Moores Creek National Military Parks.
This scenery, enhanced by a mild climate
with enough rainfall to assist with the state’s
abundant greenery, attracts millions of visitors who
come to North Carolina annually to take advantage
of its clean and uncluttered beaches, its string of forests
and the mountain ranges in the western part of
the state.
In recent years, North Carolina has become a favorite
place for the entertainment industry. Some of
the television shows and movies filmed in North Carolina
include Cast Away (2001), The Green Mile
(1999), Dawson’s Creek (1997-2003), Kiss the Girls
(1997), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997),
Forrest Gump (1998), The Fugitive (1993), The Last
of the Mohicans (1992), Sleeping with the Enemy
(1991), Bull Durham (1988) and Dirty Dancing
(1987).

A mainstay among the elite Division I athletic
programs, Duke University once again ranked near the
top during the 2006-07 athletic year. The women’s golf
team collected its fifth NCAA Championship while the
field hockey, women’s lacrosse and men’s lacrosse
squads advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
The Blue Devils registered three ACC Tournament
and five league regular season titles on the year.
Duke was also very successful nationally in 2006-
07 as 15 teams competed in NCAA Tournament action.
The Blue Devils had five teams finish in the top-10 of
the national rankings. Here is a sampling of Duke’s
accomplishments:
• Shannon Rowbury became the first Blue Devil
women’s track & field member to claim NCAA
Champion honors as she ran a 4:42.17 mile at the NCAA
Indoor Championship.
• The Blue Devils had three National Player of the Year
honorees (Amanda Blumenherst, Matt Danowski
and Lindsey Harding), one National Defensive Player
of the Year (Harding), one Rhodes Scholar (Chas
Salmen) and one Lowe’s Senior Class Award winner
(Alison Bales).
• Fourteen Blue Devils were selected Academic
All-America/National Scholar Athlete.
• A total of 29 student-athletes were selected
All-America during the season, while Duke
boasted 50 All-ACC selections.
• Four Blue Devils were named ACC Player of the
Year— Amanda Blumenherst (women’s golf), Matt
Danowski (men’s lacrosse), Lindsey Harding (women’s
basketball) and Ali Hausfeld (volleyball).
• Four Duke teams earned No. 1 national rankings
during the season — women’s basketball, women’s golf,
men’s soccer and men’s lacrosse— and four other teams
achieved a ranking of No. 5 or better— field hockey (4),
women’s lacrosse (2), men’s basketball (5) and women’s
cross country (5). Women’s Basketball and women’s golf
each finished the season ranked No. 1 nationally.
• Shannon Rowbury and Debra Vento received NCAA
Postgraduate Scholarships.
• Women’s soccer sophomore Christie McDonald was
awarded the Wilma Rudolph Student Athlete Achievement
Award after coming back from having brain surgery
over the summer of 2006. She started 18 of 21 matches
after returning.
• Duke student-athletes registered a 3.1 grade point
average during the 2006-07 school year. A total of 26
varsity teams at Duke had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or
higher following the 2006-07 academic year.
