Oil-free effi ciency
BOGE BLUEKAT – the new compressor series for effi cient production of
Class 0 oil-free compressed air
In many sensitive areas, it is essential to have absolutely oil-free compressed air. However, it is highly complex and expensive to
produce – till now, that is. BOGE is now off ering an innovative alternative: BOGE BLUEKAT screw compressors deliver Class 0 oil-free
compressed air, tested and certifi ed by TÜV SÜD. The innovative Converter technology makes oil-free compressed air aff ordable even
for small and medium enterprises.
Compressed air must be oil-free for use in,
for instance, coating processes, food production,
breweries and soda fountains. Oil-free
means Class 0 compressed air to DIN ISO
8573-1. It can be produced by using an oilfree
piston or screw compressor, in which no
oil is injected into the compression chamber.
However, the trade-off with this solution is a
higher compression temperature and a correspondingly
low level of effi ciency as well
as higher gap losses than with oil-lubricated
compressors. Besides, the compressed air
may still contain oil residue if the intake air
contains oil components.
For this reason, many users use conventional
oil-injected compressors and obtain oil-free
air through multi-stage fi ltration. Without
question, this is technically feasible, but the
costs of the purifi cation equipment are relatively
high. Besides, this method cannot guarantee
100% certainty. If the fi lters are not
serviced or are overloaded, oil breakthrough
may occur. To circumvent such problems,
BOGE has developed a brand-new concept
for oil-free compressed air production: the
BOGE BLUEKAT series.
Class 0 compressed air, offi cially tested
and certifi ed by TÜV SÜD
BOGE BLUEKAT compressors basically use a
high-effi ciency S series screw compressor,
with conventional oil injection. The innovation
is that directly after the compression
stage comes a converter, which oxidises the
oil in the compressed air to carbon dioxide
and water. The residual oil content of the
purifi ed compressed air conforms to ISO
8573-1 Class 0, meaning that the compressed
air is considered absolutely oil-free; an outstanding
result, and one which is achieved
regardless of the quality of the intake air.
So even oil-contaminated intake air is converted
to oil-free air with absolute certainty.
The very concept is effi cient
The integrated converter solution has distinct
advantages: with an external converter,
the air is cooled in the compressor aftercooler
and must then be reheated to the operating
temperature required by the converter.
Both cooling and heating use up energy. The
integrated converter is therefore consider-

account of its better heat management.

Perfect for sensitive applications
Oil-free compressed air is not essential in all
industrial applications. Because it is essentially
more complex and costly to produce
than normal compressed air, BOGE recommends
that a careful needs analysis be done.
In sectors like the food industry, microelectronics,
medical and coating technology, the
use of oil-free compressed air is an absolute
necessity. For most other applications, however,
conventional compressed air is suffi cient
for now.
Capacity to suit all needs
The models available in the new BOGE
BLUEKAT series cover the power range 30
to 37 kW and produce 3.71 to 5.01 m 3 /min
oil-free compressed air at 8, 10 or 13 bar.
Rounding out the BLUEKAT product range is
a model with variable-frequency drive.

New Managing Director
After 15 years of success in the responsible job of BOGE Managing Director, Rolf Struppek
retired into private life in summer 2011. Thorsten Meier stepped into his shoes at the
beginning of this year.

Thorsten Meier (age 40), who has a qualification in business information systems, knows BOGE
the firm inside out: he launched his career back in 1996 as a student employee and has been
with the company ever since, filling responsible roles in Information Management and Controlling.
Together, Wolf D. Meier-Scheuven and Thorsten Meier head up the international family
company.
In 2008, Mr Meier was given signing powers, and in 2010 he became commercial director of
BOGE. Important milestones in his career were the construction of the first BOGE website and
the management of the roll-out of SAP. He was also on the project board for the construction
and restructuring of Production.
Mr Meier has been a driving force for energy efficiency in the company, especially with the
installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof of the new production hall and connection to
the biogas plant, about which Mr Meier says: “As a responsible company, we will continue to
pursue the sustainable and intelligent use of resources into the future.”

BOGE introduces a consistent nomen-
clature for screw and piston compressors
The BOGE C series sets the standard
in its power range: less noise,
less pipework, fewer connection
points coupled with more power,
more configurability and more
efficiency, not forgetting the smallest
possible footprint.
Starting with this compact class,
BOGE is now introducing a new
nomenclature which will be used
for the entire product portfolio in
the long term and will ensure consistent
brand architecture within
the product range. “Our product
range has grown through the
decades. The product names did
not follow any particular naming
convention. To ensure better nav-
igation within our product range
for our customers and to reduce
the need for explanation, we have
decided to introduce a consistent
corporate naming standard for our
screw and piston compressors” ,
says Matthias Eichler, Head of Marketing
at BOGE.
BOGE is drawing from the conventional
naming structure and
selecting meaningful letters for its
products, like those which have
become an established part of the
C series product brand. Take the
C 30 F for example: the C stands
for Compact compressor product
range, 30 for the horsepower and
F for variable Frequency. “This convention
will be applied to all series
in future and ensure that BOGE
customers will be able to navigate
the different ranges and find the
ideal compressor system for them
easier” , explains Mr Eichler.

BOGE had gained further market shares and a high profile with its new,
consistent brand presence, and this was the basis for the judges’ decision.
“BOGE is an excellently positioned family company based in the region,
which gives priority to service and technical innovation above all else“, said
Marketing-Club president Professor Dr Uwe Rössler about this year’s winner.
This is the eleventh time the Marketing-Club OWL Bielefeld e.V. has awarded
the Marketing OWL. The trophy is an owl cast in bronze, symbolising the
keen farsightedness which companies like BOGE must have in relation to
markets and marketing to be successful.
BOGE began relaunching the corporate design and brand in the 2008/2009
crisis period. A redefinition of the brand essence prompted the realignment
of the entire marketing strategy, including the mission statement (BOGE the
brand producer), corporate design (logo and claim), an image and product
campaign as well as a new Internet and trade fair concepts.

Interview with Head of Development Dr Uwe Kaiser on quality management at BOGE
Certification to DIN ISO 14001 is just one of the ways in which quality, environmental protection and sustainability are being rigorously pursued at BOGE. Dr Uwe Kaiser,
Head of Development at BOGE, talks about BOGE quality management’s current targets and successes.
What standing does quality have at BOGE,
and what approach is being taken to
refine quality in the long term?
Quality improvement is fundamentally not
an abstract concept for us. It is the primary
objective of our daily work at BOGE. Our
strategy is first and foremost not to let any
errors into the company. This we achieve, for
example, by means of rigorous incoming inspection.
At the same time, we endeavour not
to let out any errors, which is why we conduct
interim inspections the entire length
of the value chain as well as a conscientious
final inspection. As part of the introduction
of ISO 14001, we also issued company-wide
guidelines. This document definitively sets
forth what the central functions of Quality,
Environment, Health and Safety – QEHS for
short – mean for BOGE, what is expected of
each individual employee and how we can
all gain from it.
What effects have the measures so far
had? Where is the better quality awareness
most apparent?
The process is still at an early stage, but we
have set ourselves some clear targets. First
and last, what matters is to improve our
products of course. To that end, for instance,
we have dusted off the idea of “BOGE TÜV”
and subject our systems and machinery to
regular testing by the designer. In addition,
we have introduced a new logging system
for final inspection, which allows for the
better and more effective classification of
errors. As a result, we can analyse more quickly
and easily where errors have slipped in and
identify better their causes, and, in turn,
solve problems better and more directly.
This test and inspection system has already
produced extremely positive results, and
for that reason it is set to be implemented
in Service and Support.
At BOGE, sustainability and environmental
friendliness also come under the heading
of quality. Have these aspects become
real buying criteria for the customer?
We definitely believe so, and we actively
communicate this. We introduced the environmental
management certificate DIN ISO
14001 not just out of self-interest. More and
more customers are demanding and factoring
such certificates into their purchase
decision. However, we take care to examine
whether the effort involved in obtaining certain
certifications is ultimately worth it and
also seek advice in the matter, to ensure that
we are seeing the big picture. Another thing
we can say on the subject of sustainability is
that every single measure undertaken in the
areas of quality, environmental management
and certification has to be sustainable in
itself. After all, interim audits are conducted
annually and a full audit is held every three
years to determine whether the requirements
are met.
In light of the effort involved, are environmental
protection and efficiency compatible
with an industrial company at all?
Essentially, yes, but there definitely still is
a lot of potential. Lots of research is being
done on the area of resource efficiency, with

BOGE Australia was there to support its
dealer Air Gas Compressors Specialists Ltd.
when it exhibited at EMEX in Auckland,
New Zealand’s largest Engineering and
Electronics trade fair. “Because of the limited
number of brands offered by just a few
distributors/importers in New Zealand, we
saw this as an opportunity to achieve more
market share and increase demand for the
BOGE product”, says Jim Rohner, manager of
BOGE Australia. It was a move that benefited
both partners: numerous new orders – for
example, for the S50 and SLF51 – were
secured during the trade fair. At the same
time, BOGE’s sales figures in New Zealand
have increased markedly.

When Veolia Environmental Services developed a purpose-built Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Mansfi eld almost two years ago, they opted for a BOGE SF series frequency-
controlled screw compressor to power the crucial optical sorting devices.
Veolia Environmental Services Nottinghamshire
operates the £14m Materials Recovery
Facility (MRF) in Mansfi eld on behalf of
Nottinghamshire County Council. The Mansfi
eld MRF is a state-of-the-art facility where
household items such as plastic bottles,
paper and cans are sorted and baled using
a mixture of manual and automated sorting
technology. Nearly all of the rubbish that
comes into the Mansfi eld MRF is recycled
and made into something new at re-processing
factories. Currently sorting between
1,000 and 1,350 tonnes of recyclables each
week, the purpose-built facility requires
compressed air to sort the rubbish. The main
job of compressed air within the facility is to
power the four optical sorting devices. These
units refl ect light off the waste as it passes
under it on a conveyor belt and identifi es
the size, shape and type of material. With

Efficient, oil-free compressed air
When searching for a cost-effective and energy-efficient way to produce oil-free compressed air, the decision-makers at Valuepak GmbH came across the innovative BOGE
BLUEKAT series. These oil-lubricated compressors produce Class 0 compressed air, as officially tested and certified by the German TÜV SÜD, an accredited test laboratory.
Valuepak GmbH makes cardboard cups and
has positioned itself in the premium segment
of the take-away market. The standards
of quality and safety Valuepak applies in the
production of cups in its Salzburg plant are
extremely high. Michael Olsacher, one of the
two managing directors, says, “We are required
to use oil-free compressed air.” As the
company is still a newcomer to the market,
cost was an important factor in the planning
of the compressed-air station.
To choose the right compressor, Michael
Olsacher from Valuepak turned to Andreas
Falkner, Head of BOGE Austria. From his
many years of experience, Falkner knows
that,“ at the mention of the production of
oil-free compressed air, many users of compressed
air will first think of oil-free compressors.
While these compressors do not use oil,
the oil contained in the entrained air is
carried over, meaning that Class 0 compressed
air cannot be guaranteed.” In addi-
tion, the acquisition cost is much higher
than with oil-lubricated compressors. It is
ostensibly cheaper to use conventional
oil-injected compressors. Since oil is injected

into the compression chamber during the
compression process – for cooling, lubrication
and sealing purposes – they work at
a more energy-efficient temperature. “But
this oil must be removed from the compressed
air in a sequence of treatment steps
downstream, which makes the compressed
air much less energy-efficient to produce,
plus there is no absolute certainty with this
method either. One missed service or an
overdue filter change is enough to cause oil
breakthrough. There is no safety mechanism
here”, explains the BOGE head of branch.
An innovative way of producing oil-free
compressed air
After receiving comprehensive advice and
weighing up all the pros and cons, Valuepak
GmbH opted for a third, brand-new way of
producing oil-free compressed air: using
the variable-frequency BOGE BLUEKAT SLF
40 compressor. BLUEKAT compressors are
based on highly efficient oil-injected S-series
screw compressors – with conventional oil
injection. The innovation is that directly after
the compressor stage comes a converter,
which oxidises the oil in the compressed air
to carbon dioxide and water. The residual
oil content of the compressed air conforms
to ISO Class 0, as officially certified by the
German TÜV SÜD: an outstanding result,
and one which is achieved regardless of the
quality of the intake air. So even oil-contam-
inated intake air is converted to oil-free air
with absolute certainty.

Valuepak. The firm makes operating cost savings
with every cubic metre of compressed
air because an S-series compressor is much

More power, more advanced IE3 motor and optimised design details for maximum efficiency in the 11 kW/15 hp class: the redesigned
C 15 and C 15 D screw compressors were added to the C series at the beginning of 2012. The C 15 F and C 15 FD variable frequency
models will come onto the market in the 2nd quarter of 2012.

The condensate can be disposed of in the
sewage system without any further
treatment, which eliminates the need for
expensive condensate treatment and/or
disposal. And compared with downstream
compressed-air treatment, this method
requires less maintenance and is more reli-
able. Oil breakthrough is not possible, as the
requisite stable temperature in the converter
is monitored. Nor does the oil contained in
the ambient air affect the BLUEKAT, as it is
oxidised in the converter. Because sustain-
able production processes are important to
the Salzburg-based company, heat recovery
was also installed. The compressor heat is
used for heating purposes.

The beginning of 2012 saw the addition
of models C 15 and C 15 D with integrated

Steady growth in turnover and gains in market share in Australia paved the way for the establishment in 2010 of the subsidiary
BOGE Compressors (Australia) Pty Ltd, launching the next phase of BOGE’s successful activities down under.

BOGE USA charting a
successful course
With Scott Woodward, the new General
Manager at BOGE USA, at the helm, the
North American market is making further
strides. Scott is focusing on centres of industry
to build up and expand BOGE’s business
activities. BOGE has signed up Central Air
Equipment Ltd., Canada, as a dealer, which
will handle the Canadian market from now
on.
BOGE products were presented in the mining company’s auditorium in Peru
Shortly after the office was moved from
Perth to Melbourne, BOGE Australia signed
up Enerquip – based in Brisbane in southeast
Queensland – as a dealer, and the firm
has been doing a fine job representing
the brand in this region. “With its 20 years
of expertise and a good service ethos,
Enerquip is the optimal partner for BOGE”,
says Jim Rohner, Head of BOGE Australia,
pleased. With its new dealer on board, RIMS
Engineering, BOGE Australia now also covers
the extensive Tasmania region. The dealer
serves the entire region from its two offices
and is currently building up a new Service
