Stages of Water Treatment 

The vast majority of systems sold are installed into 

vehicles. These may be relatively small, car-derived 

vans able to carry a system of 300 litres, right up to 

large vans with 1,000 litre systems. 

The reason that van-mounted systems are so popular 

is that they give the window cleaner flexibility. Taking 

a supply of pure water with you means you’re able to 

clean wherever you go, with no need to rely on outside 

water sources. 

The window cleaner simply fills their system (usually 

overnight) and a full tank is ready for work in the 

morning. It couldn’t be simpler.

the pure water to be pumped to the pole, all while 

the van is securely locked.

Getting the water pure is a crucial part 

of the process. Reach & Wash systems 

incorporate several stages of water 

treatment so that the water is purified as 

the tank is filled. 

Most users set their system up to fill 

overnight ready for work in the morning. 

Filling times vary depending on the size 

of the system, water pressure etc. 

Maintenance of the water-treatment 

system is straightforward, and in the 

case of the Zero, mostly automatic. 

Ultraviolet 

germicidal 

irradiation (UVGI) 

UVGI is a disinfection method 

that uses ultraviolet light at 

sufficiently short wavelength to 

kill microorganisms. Within water 

treatment it is highly effective 

against water-bourne hazards such 

as the Legionella bacterium. 

carbon filtration 

Carbon filters are most effective at 

removing chlorine, sediment, and 

volatile organic compounds (VOCs) 

from water. If not removed, these 

would damage the RO membrane. 

Activated Carbon neutralizes Ozone 

gas after it has done its work. 

water softening 

A type of ion-exchange resin is used to 

swap out calcium and magnesium ions 

and replace them with sodium ions, and 

prevents calcium deposits forming on 

the membrane. This type of resin may 

be regenerated with salt. Adding sodium 

to the water also instantly forms salt 

crystals on remaining impurities so that 

they become too big to pass through 

the RO membrane. Improving RO 

performance prolongs the life of the DI 

filter and reduces running costs. 

de-ionisation 

Two types of special ion-exchanging 

resins are used to swap out any 

remaining ions for Hydrogen and 

hydroxide ions to give H2O. Usually 

these two resin types are mixed 

together to form “mixed bed” resin. 

A highly effective water treatment, 

but relatively expensive, and so 

often only used as the final stage in 

a water-treatment system. 

Multi-Stage Treatment 

Each of these treatment methods remove different types of impurities. 

Reverse osmosis is a highly robust, effective and economical 

purification process, but as the membranes are delicate, water entering 

them must first be pre-treated. UVGI, Ozonation, Softening, Carbon 

and 5 Micron filtration are all pre-treatment stages for RO systems.

is a gas with strong oxidizing 

properties capable of destroying 

a wide range of pathogens, 

including prions. Prevents biofilm 

and prolongs filter life.

Highly effective and economical, RO

The Zero represents the Ultimate in 

Pure water Window Cleaning Systems. 

The most advanced Reach & Wash® System ever, Ionic’s new 

Zero produces ultra pure water at zero parts per billion (0ppb) and 

that represents the gold standard. Water at 0ppb is one thousand 

times purer than water at 0ppm and because pure water cleans 

by dissolving dirt ions, it follows that water at 0ppb is capable of 

dissolving much more dirt and grime than water of 0ppm. This 

means faster cleaning, especially on infrequent jobs. 

Other systems remove only dissolved solids from the water supply, 

uniquely the Zero removes both dissolved solids and all organics 

as well as bacteria from the water supply. The result is not only 

water that is 1,000 times purer but also ultra pure water that is free 

from micro-organisms such as legionella bacteria and the organic 

matter that bacteria feeds upon. A significant benefit is that bio-film 

cannot form upon the surface of filter media or the RO membrane 

that means that filters maintain day one performance which in turn 

means lower running costs. 

The Zero can be upgraded with high pressure stainless steel filter 

housings and a powerful booster pump, enabling even faster filling.

The Zero’s Hot Water upgrade 

enables the system to heat 

the pure water (using a diesel 

burner) up to 80°C in minutes. 

Boosted Fill 

A powerful, mains-powered water pump 

boosts the pressure of the inlet water when 

filling, which dramatically improves the rate 

of pure-water production. 

Essential in areas of low water pressure, 

but also very useful even if the mains water 

pressure is adequate. The boosted fill 

upgrade can fill the tank up to three times 

faster than mains water pressure alone.

Window Cleaners who use Reach & Wash® systems 

know that the purity of their water is of paramount 

importance. Even a relatively low TDS value can lead to 

spotting, as these dissolved solids are left behind after 

the water dries. But there is more to consider than the 

impurities in the water to begin with. 

A certain volume of water has the capacity to dissolve 

only so much before it becomes saturated. For 

example, a glass of water can only dissolve so much 

table salt. If any more is added after saturation, it simply 

sits in the bottom of the glass in solid form. 

Similarly, the water used for cleaning can only dissolve 

a certain amount before it becomes saturated. If you 

have fewer impurities to begin with, then there is more 

dissolving capacity for cleaning. The purer the water 

used, the better it will be at dissolving dirt. 

This means less water is needed for rinsing, and a far 

greater certainty of spot-free results!

Million vs Billion 

What does it mean? 

Most window cleaners who use waterfed pole are familiar with measuring the quality of their pure water in Parts Per million (ppm) of 

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). But what exactly does this mean? And how does water purified to the part per million compare with 

water that is purified to the part per billion? 

One Part per Million: 

One part per million of total dissolved solids 

means that, for every million molecules of water 

there will be one molecule of some impurity 

(mainly calcium carbonate in the UK). This is 

approximately 1 teaspoon of calcium carbonate 

dissolved in 1,000 litres of water. 

One Part per Billion: 

In comparison, one part per billion 

would be approximately one 

teaspoon of calcium carbonate 

dissolved in 1,000,000 litres 

of water, or 1,000 IBC tanks of 

water.

Simple Systems for Straightforward Cleaning 

Since being introduced, the Reach & Wash System has undergone a 

number of revisions. V4 represents the latest, fourth generation of the 

Reach & Wash vehicle-mount. 

Having pure water on-board means that window cleaning starts within 

minutes of arriving at the job site with the minimum of set-up time. 

V4 uses Ionic’s latest filter housings with replaceable filter cartridges 

mounted vertically on our trademark crash tested stainless steel 

frame. V4 boasts the use of John Guest fittings throughout ensuring 

a neat and leak free design. The standard V4 is available in a range of 

tank sizes from 300 to 1,000 litres to suit all types of commercial vans 

and only requires mains water pressure (min 45psi) to filter tap water 

down to zero parts per million purity. 

If a water supply is available on site then the V4 can process pure 

water into the tank whilst the 12 volt pumps provide pure water for 

cleaning. The standard V4 features a 12 volt pure water delivery pump 

operated by a variable pump speed controller, automatic tank-full 

shut off, and a water level indicator.

Static Systems 

For businesses that have (or plan to have) several window 

cleaning vehicles on the road, a fleet solution will be the 

right choice. This option separates the system into two 

distinct parts; The static system and the delivery system. 

The static water treatment system is installed in a 

permanent location (usually an industrial unit, garage or 

outhouse) which continually fills one or more large tanks 

with pure water. The stored pure water is then transferred 

into the tank of a “delivery system” which is installed in 

a van or trailer. Delivery systems are designed just to 

‘deliver’ the pure water, i.e. they have little or no water 

treatment onboard, but have the same crash-tested 

chassis and control gear as our other systems.

Thermopure 

Hot water cleans better 

The Zero and the V4 can be upgraded to hot water. The Zero 

has a special Thermopure version, wherein the diesel burner is 

incorporated within the stainless steel frame. The V4 is upgraded by 

means of the Thermopure HotBox, an external water heating unit. 

We all know that using hot water for cleaning produces better results. Heated ultra pure water is less dense 

and so absorbs dirt more readily and dries more quickly to an incredible finish. 

Breezes through initial cleans and shifts even the most stubborn residues. Great in Winter but equally useful 

in Summer when cold water would turn to steam on sunbaked glazing. If you demand the best then Thermopure 

is for you! 

Thermopure heaters use diesel from either the vehicle’s fuel tank Reach & Wash® Thermopure TM Systems 

or a separate remote tank that can be filled with red diesel for economy. The highly efficient heat exchanger 

lifts the temperature quickly up to 80 degrees. Water in the tank can be preheated while on the move, or be 

heated at point of use. 

In a “time is money” business such as window cleaning a little snow and ice can freeze your assets and stop 

you earning. When cold waterfed pole systems freeze to a stand still, Ionic Systems’ 

Thermopure delivers heated pure water and fantastic cleaning results. In Poland Thermopure customers 

routinely work in temperatures as low as -15°C.

The Thermopure HotBox allows a coldwater system to be upgraded 

to hotwater. The HotBox uses the same diesel burners as our 

Thermopure TM systems, and are capable of supplying hot water within 

minutes of activation. 

The 9kW HotBox has a winter/summer setting, and is powerful enough 

to provide piping hot water all year round.

Waterfed pole systems require that a supply of 

pure-water be taken to the work-site, wherever 

that may be. The water is held in a large holding 

tank, often holding 600 or 1,000 litres of pure 

water - enough to last the window cleaner all day. 

However, transporting this large tank of water 

is potentially very dangerous. Water is heavy, 

with 1,000 litres of water weighing a tonne. If the 

vehicle were to be involved in a traffic accident, 

there is a real danger that this very heavy water 

tank could break loose and cause severe injury 

to the driver and passengers of the vehicle. 

It is for this reason that Ionic Systems 

commissioned an independent crash-testing 

programme at Thatcham Research, one of the 

UK’s leading vehicle crash-testing centres.

We can apply a hard-wearing, waterproof vehicle lining 

that protects your van floor from rust, damage and 

water ingress. 

With vehicle floor protection you won’t need to worry 

about water spillages, scratches or other damage that 

can occur to a hard-working van. 

Did you know...? 

The installation of a waterfed pole system constitutes 

a “vehicle modification” which usually 

must be specifically endorsed on your motor 

insurance policy. 

We can provide you (and your insurer) with the 

assurance that the installation of our system 

complies with the Road Traffic Act, so you can 

be confident that your policy remains valid. 

The lining is applied to the van floor and the lower section 

of the walls for maximum protection. Water simply 

runs off without even coming into contact with the 

paintwork. 

Floor protection can be applied to almost any vehicle, 

and is so robust that it lasts for years.

The X5 is a de-mountable truck-mount Reach & 

Wash System. The tough, compact design can be 

installed and removed quickly and easily in any 

commercial vehicle fitted with tie-down points in 

the load area. Ideal for exterior window, solar panel

mains water and electricity are available (a 3.5kw 

generator can also be used). 

The X5 is available in both 240v and 110v options. 

An hour’s meter is fitted so that filter life can be 

monitored. Four filters are fitted to process mains 

water into pure water for cleaning.

The Quattro is the best point of use system 

for a wide variety of Window, Solar Panel and 

Hard Surface exterior cleaning applications. 

The tough, compact design and ease of use 

makes the Quattro the number one choice for 

work in any area where both mains water and 

electricity are available (a generator can also 

be used). 

Window Cleaners make use of the Quattro 

to access remote parts of modern buildings 

such as court-yards and roof tops for 

atrium cleaning. High-rise buildings where 

suspended platforms are used as well as the 

abseiling technique also benefit from short 

waterfed pole cleaning from rooftop Quattro 

use. On-site building maintenance teams 

also use the Quattro for in-house window and 

façade cleaning duties as well as spot-free car 

washing. 

The QuattRO is available in three configurations. 

The standard QuattRO works from 

water pressure alone, and is suitable for a 

single operator to use at lower levels. 

The QuattRO Electric uses a 240V (or 110V) 

pump to boost the water pressure, and can be 

used to clean to 80ft for a single operator, or 

lower heights for multiple operators. 

The Quattro ‘S’ model is designed for high 

performance in the Worlds most demanding 

environments. Plastic filter housings may be 

prone UV degradation and to failure in temperatures 

above 30C. The ‘S’ model features 

high-pressure stainless steel filter housings 

that can withstand temperatures in direct 

sunlight of up to 50C. Because the pressure 

is boosted even further, the QuattRO ‘S’ can

The Caddy TM 

Water Softeners 

Softeners Prolong Filter Life 

Calcium Carbonate (commonly known as ‘limescale’) 

is found in most water supplies. Areas with very little 

Calcium in the water are referred to as Soft water 

areas, whilst areas with increased levels of Calcium 

are referred to as Medium or Hard water areas. People 

from Hard water areas are familiar with the harmful 

effects that hard water has on heating systems and 

other household appliances. 

If not removed, Calcium in the water supply will have 

a detrimental effect on the Reverse Osmosis (RO) 

filter in your Reach & Wash System. The service life 

of the Thin Film Membrane found inside the RO filter 

housing will be reduced dramatically when calcium 

deposits form upon its surface. An RO membrane 

could last many years when a softener is used as a 

protection measure. 

Water softeners offer two benefits, firstly harmful 

calcium is removed and secondly the remaining impurities 

are physically larger in size so fewer impurities 

can pass through the RO membrane. 

Unlike other filters, softeners can be regenerated by 

backwashing with a saline solution, and as such can 

last many years. 

Caddy Softener 

Ionic Systems in-line ‘Caddy’ water softeners are available in two size options. 

According to the hardness (TDS) of the water either a single or triple and be 

used. A single filter Caddy for soft to medium hard water up to 300 TDS or a 

triple filter Caddy for Hard water areas above 300 TDS. 

The Caddy is a versatile and simple-to-use system 

that connects directly to a water supply. 

No power supply is needed, though if using the 

Reverse Osmosis unit, it is recommended that the 

water pressure is at least 45psi (3 BAR) 

The Caddy is available in three different 

configurations (as well as the softeners); 

As a single, double or triple DI unit for producing 

small volumes of pure water for occasional jobs or 

where local water is relatively soft (less than about 

75ppm), or as an RO/DI unit for more frequent use 

(in harder water areas it may also require the in-line 

water softener option) 

The caddy features open-ended filter housings with 

replaceable cartridges. 

Easy to transport and very simple to use, the caddy 

is a great point-of-use system that can enable 

Reach & Wash® cleaning with multiple poles 

(provided there is adequate water pressure).  

MultiSoft 

Ionic Systems in-line ‘MultiSoft’ water softeners are the idea 

mobile water softener solution for any pure water cleaning system 

that does not come with a water softener as standard. The combination 

of triple softeners and built-in salt canister simplifies both 

use in service and the backwash maintenance cycle. The foolproof 

design brings ease of maintenance and high capacity water softening 

performance to the window cleaning application.

differences between our pole range, we extended them next to one another 

and photographed the results. 

The “PLUS” ranges have a higher grade of carbon fibre, and are therefore

To clean at heights of 50, 60 and even 80 feet, 

a very special pole is needed. The SWIFT range 

has been specially designed to meet the needs of 

cleaning at these heights. 

The Swift pole has unrivalled rigidity, and is the 

only composite telescopic pole available that can

But this outstanding rigidity has not come at 

the cost of weight or size. Thanks to a specially 

developed thermoplastic toughened matrix system
