‘Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.
Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise!’ Psalm 96:3&4
A
Welcome
This is the second edition of our magazine. Last year we asked ministries to share their vision for
2013 and this year we hear the testimonies of how that played out. As you read through you will
read of the challenges we have faced as His people, for some the challenge of pruning, for others
the challenge of growth. There is a pattern of ‘preparation’ for what the Lord is bringing, and an
anticipation for what 2014 might look like.
Here at CLAN we have journeyed through that pruning challenge and are asking God’s guidance
as we ‘grow forward’. As a staff and volunteer team we have found our perspective changed, and
have learned to lean on and partner more and more with the Holy Spirit.
The regular giving of the Friends of CLAN play a pivotal part of CLAN moving forward and we
thank God for them. New friends are most welcome.
In 2014 we have planned 2 national gatherings, 2 local events and a city mission! We hope you will
join us and experience being linked with Christians from all across Scotland.
We pray all God’s blessing for the year that God brings you and look forward to testifying of His
grace in 2014.
With love to you all,
CATCHING THE WAVE
"Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel
before The Lord our maker;
For he is our God and we are the people of His
pasture, the flock under His care". (Psalm 95 v 6)
"Ascribe to The Lord the Glory due to His name;
bring an offering and come into His courts.
Worship The Lord in the splendor of holiness;
tremble before Him all the earth" ( Psalm 96 v8)
God is more wonderful than we can begin to
imagine. He is Holy, faithful and beautiful. All His
ways are perfect. God is great and in Jesus Christ
our saviour and Lord God has revealed His love,
mercy and saving power. We are able to love Jesus
because He has loved us.
The possibilities of intimacy with Jesus, deepening
in love should be the greatest desire of the believers
heart. Before strategy, structure, even mission itself,
there is the encounter of Jesus. Not just an
encounter but a growing longing for ever deeper
encounters with our Lord. It is the encountering that
is the springboard for meaningful engagement with
the world. We do not desire Jesus so that we can
engage better. Rather we thirst for for His presence,
through the work of the Holy Spirit, and through that
relationship we long to live in distinctive obedience.
The reason that I have reflected upon our encounter
with Jesus is that while the church in Scotland is in
need of many things, I would contend that the
greatest need of the church is to encounter afresh
the presence of The Lord. Could it be that in the the
past generation, and beyond, we have hungered for
many good things but not the best thing? Is part of
our current difficulties as the church in Scotland due
to our lack of desire for the presence of our
Saviour?
It is clear that the church faces many challenges in
our generation but is there a start of a growing
longing for Jesus afresh? I believe that the Holy
Spirit is prompting a realisation in the hearts of His
people of their utter need for God.
I reread this quote from A.W. Tozer recently and felt
it could have been written for today
" in this hour of all but universal darkness one
cheering gleam appears; within the fold of
contemporary Christianity there are to be found
increasing numbers of persons whose religious lives
are marked by a growing hunger after God Himself.
They are eager for spiritual realities. They are athirst
for God and they will not be satisfied till they have
drunk deep In the fountain of living water.
(Pursuit of God, Tozer page 3)
As I have travelled the country recently I have come
across a growing number of people spending more
time praying, worshipping and thirsting for the
presence of God. They are hungering and thirsting
after God. I find this so encouraging because I
believe such promptings come from the Holy Spirit.
We do not recognise our own need without the
gracious work of God calling us into deeper
communion. It is God that wonderfully revives our
hearts and renews our churches. New life flows
from a supernatural encounter with almighty God. I
am convinced that as individual believers,
communities of faith and as a nation we are in need
of of a fresh understanding of our need for God. The
encouraging thing is that God is prompting such a
desire in the hearts of some.
The theologian Karl Barth Wrote "there is no
discipleship without the one who calls us to it" ( Karl
Barth - discipleship 317)
In that quote the writer is making the point that
discipleship cannot be done by us alone. To follow
God and live for him always involves the call,
leading, challenging and gracious mercy of God. As
we seek to serve King Jesus, sometimes, in His
grace, He brings unexpected signs of blessing. He
reminds us of how great He is and that His gospel in
the power of the Holy Spirit accomplishes amazing
things.
Amazing testimonies of salvation, stories of healing,
new hope and faith rising, growing signs of the
kingdom rule of Jesus advancing one life at a time.
In Wales, and Northern Ireland there are signs of
Gods grace touching lives in wonderful ways. In
Scotland there are small stirrings of hope even in
difficult times. In pockets of believers across the
nation there are stories of The goodness of God,
reaching the lost and drawing these who are far off.
At CLAN we are convinced that God is calling His
people to seek Him first. We need to delight in God
and His saving power. Out of that encounter will
flow new love, devotion and power. The overflow
will be renewed and transformed lives. At this years
CLAN Gathering we want to hear from those who
are seeing unusual signs of God's goodness in the
U.K. Particularly, from Cwmbran and Colraine. As
well as stories from Scotland. As we hear of God's
grace in action and seek Him, our desire is that we
may catch something of what God is doing and see
faith rise in our nation.
CLAN Leadership Team.

As we seek the adventures of God we can so often walk round a corner and collide with the
unexpected, the request to do something far beyond our human limitations. I had just such a
collision when I felt God asking me to write this book, to gather pieces from the years of pursing
Him and present a message to God's people for consideration, to define a missing powerhouse
lying locked and going rusty.
If you have ever walked through an armoury of the Spirit, the weapons may have surprised you.
Amongst the classic swords and shields did anyone happen to see a song, a paint brush or a
dancers shoe, a skillful spreadsheet, an architect's plans, a surgeon's knife or a business
strategy?
From the shelves of heaven the creative mandate is being dusted off and returned to the earth.
Timely defining of our creative DNA lies in God's outstretched hand. There are two directives:
there is the general outpouring of Kingdom creativity available to all believers to energize their
lives and areas of influence producing new solution, strategy and innovation. There is also the
calling of the Creative Warriors, the artisans who combine skill and anointing for specific reason.
The hour strikes a wakeup call for both and their intertwining purposes in the nations. Strategic
objectives in the times that lie ahead.
This book seeks to unpack those directives, blowing away the foggy mists of forgotten purpose,
revealing one of the greatest weapons bestowed upon the church; the creative power of God.
Leading the CLAN Creative team has woven through this journey and been part of turning
revelation into tangible outcome. Watching God's people rise through mission, worship,
intercession, teaching and more with new creative answers and artistry- I am in awe. Those who
have embraced the venture to new depths of the Holy Spirit are finding surprising treasure down
there for gifts and skills, there is new revelation, a vibrancy of faith and certainty of vision.
In these last seven years Scotland has ignited with missional master plans that have reached
thousands of people in such places as the streets, festivals and pubs. This will continue to
advance but there is a next stage on the horizon; new equipping for the workplace, for God's
army that are already strategically positioned there. What's coming is an injection of Holy Spirit
innovation for this area too that will explode the boxes of current limitation and allow permission
for more effective and liberating solutions- space to explore and learn to work closely with a
creative God.
The forces of heaven are poised to help us become part of the changes that must take place.
The return of the creative DNA to God's people provides firepower to excel. As the world systems
shake and the gospel message magnifies in the earth, heading towards the end of days, we must
grasp that the Lord is coming to change His church into a warrior bride; formidable, phenomenal,
creative....limitless.
Charity Bowman-Webb heads up the CLAN
Creativity Team, leads Blue Flame in Inverness
and has just released her first book (which
we thoroughly recommend to you!).
5 DAYS | ONE CITY | KINGDOM MISSION
The amazing thing about this mission event is that it will all be done in the context of blessing,
supporting and enabling the CLAN-friendly churches in Glasgow to maximise their mission
and outreach next summer. All of the local plans will be devised and driven by the local
churches with the expertise and resources of CLAN and our partners in mission.
As if that was not enough we are keen that this event will equip and release church teams
from throughout Scotland creating a legacy of equipped mission teams able to go back and
do mission in their own community.
All of this will be done in the spirit of unity that is at the heart of Christian Linked Across the
Nation. CLAN will run the event under the umbrella organisation of More Than Gold 2014. We
will be working with lots of our friends in partner mission organisations.
No previous mission experience is required. All of the participants will receive training
during the event. They will be part of a small team (6-12 people) made up of people they came
with led by an experienced mission leader.
We are very keen to hear from any churches in the Glasgow area that would like us to send
teams to serve them. We are also keen to hear from church leaders and others who would love
to bring a team from somewhere else in Scotland to be part of this mission event.
BUILDING UNITY IN OBAN
For 21 years I was a Baptist minister in Surrey. One of my leadership team members
relocated to Onich near Fort William and was generous enough to invite Ros, my wife,
and I to stay from time to time. Every time we ventured north of the border it seemed that
we stepped into something that the Holy Spirit was stirring, although it was difficult to
define exactly what it was! In our home church we had been impacted by an outpouring
of the Holy Spirit in the 1990s and this continued, helped by visits to Stoneleigh Bible
week and latterly New Wine/Soul Survivor. On our trips to Scotland we began to hear of
the impact that CLAN Gathering was having on so many congregations across the
nation.
Over about a 10 year period we felt more and more drawn to the West Coast. We had
begun to make connections with a number of congregations and church leaders in the
Lochaber and Lorn areas. 3 years ago I had handed on the team leadership of the
church in Surrey and was slowly reducing my hours so that I could “slip away"
into some form of retirement! It was not to be….
One day in March last year the phone rang. “Hello, it's Helen
here from Oban Baptist Church. We're in a bit of difficulty
at the moment, do you think you would be able to
consider the possibility of coming to help us for 2 or 3 years?"
My wife happened to be standing next to me when the phone
had rung. Instantly we both said “Yes!". By September we had
moved to Oban.
The reason for mentioning all this preamble is because I think it characterises
something that the Lord is doing in these days. I believe he is drawing people into strategic
places and preparing individuals and groups and congregations and networks for a significant
move of his Spirit.
I admit to being disappointed that there would be no CLAN Gathering in 2013 as I had looked
forward to that sense of unity of heart and mind and purpose that comes from thousands of
people in agreement before the Lord. However, when I saw the impact that CLAN Women
had within the town, and not least our own congregation, earlier this year I realised that
devolution, for this time at least, was indeed the Lord’s plan. So it didn't take a lot of
persuading to consider planning a CLAN event for the whole family. There is a hunger
amongst the folk in and around Argyll. There is a growing unity within Oban and beyond and a
CLAN event will strengthen this.
My prayer and passion is that CLAN coming to Argyll will be a catalyst that will enable people
of all ages and backgrounds and churchmanship to catch a renewed sense of vision to reach
their communities with the transforming love of Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to the
glory of God the Father.
Oban and part of the CLAN
Argyll event team.

The New Sound
ofWorship
Scotland - there is a sound that needs to be released from our mouths
and our instruments - a cry, a roar a kind of melancholy joy that will be
heard in Heaven and in all the Earth. For too long we have hidden behind
the worship produced from other nations, now, it's our time.
We have a distinct sound. It's warrior-like yet has such passion and beauty within it that it melts
the hardest of hearts.
My husband Keith and I have been on this hunger-driven journey for the last six or seven years.
We have seemed odd at times, not content with the current contemporary worship that is so
popular in most of our churches. It's not that the music isn't beautiful - it is!, It's not that it
doesn't glorify Jesus or point to our wonderful Daddy God - it most certainly does! But it's not
conceived in the heart of a Scottish Bride...there is no celtic lilt, no flavour of the Scottish
wildness, no soul searching lament that hovers and rises like the mist on the shores of our lochs
and glens. Keith and I have thought many times, where is OUR sound?...
This is deeper than just adding drums, pipes or whistles to bring a celtic flavour. It must rise up
from our feet, tremor through our whole being and be released into the atmosphere to join with
the rest of the nations of the worlds indigenous sound. No one can make it for us, we have to
do it, and those who weren't born here but have had Scotland laid on their hearts by God
Himself, can also release this glorious song! It starts with falling in love with the Bridegroom,
then His beautiful Scottish warrior Bride!
My hearts cry is that Scotland's worshippers would arise, dare to take the road less travelled by
and begin to release a sound that will not only wash over the feet of the Lion of the tribe of
Judah but will cause us to look into His very EYES!
The very bedrock of our nation will respond to this resonance. It will release the prayers, the
tears shed into our land. Generation after generation has poured out its prayers and anointed
the ground with worship. Longing for change, longing for Holiness, longing for God
consciousness - to once more be known as the Land of the book.
I was thinking recently about the Destiny Stone. The destiny stone is the stone that all the Kings
of Scotland sat upon while they were crowned King, but did you know that the Stone of Destiny
was also a singing stone? Singing stones were some of Scotland’s first musical instruments.
Our ancestors discovered that if you suspended the stone above the ground then struck it with
another stone a deep, dull note would resound from it.
There is an ancient prophecy, that says that the Destiny Stone shall not sing again until the true
King of Scotland sits upon the throne and takes His rightful place. I say to you,
Let the Destiny Stone within you SING! For you already have your King!
WELCOME TO
NORTH ATLANTIC
DREAMS
In 1993, John Paul Jackson launched Streams Ministries
International–a ministry that endeavors to encourage,
motivate, and equip individuals to walk in greater
maturity, wisdom, character, and holiness. Inspired by
Psalm 46:4, "There is a river whose streams shall make
glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of
the Most High," Streams Ministries seeks to touch people
with the message of God's love, bring the awe of God
back into the Church, and transform lives through the
supernatural power of the Holy Spirit.
North Atlantic Dreams is a Streams International Training
Discerning His Voice
For Scotland
“The testimony of Jesus
is the spirit of
prophecy" Rev 19:10
Discerning His Voice for Scotland (DHVfS) is an initiative drawing together recognised prophetic
ministries and leaders in Scotland to consult together to determine emphases which emerge from a review of a wide range of
prophetic revelation which has a focus on God’s purposes and destiny for Scotland, to benefit the Body of Christ. Our goal is
to build faith, expectancy, heart-commitment, to encourage God’s people, and provide practical response and prayer points in
line with God’s present purposes for the nation.
During 2013, some significant prophetic words have been given to the nation by recognised prophetic
ministries, and there have been various gatherings in Scotland that have sought to hear what God has been
saying to the nation. Some key statements out of these words/occasions are given below. These statements
give insight into the present purposes of God for the nation, include promises which motivate us to faith,
thankfulness and consecration, and highlight response points so we can cooperate with the Holy Spirit as He
seeks to extend the Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ through His people. He is answering our prayers for a
continued move of God in the Land.
It is noted that these statements are only a part of what God is saying to His people, and complement the many other things He is saying through
His people. Summaries of some of the words can be found via the link given at the bottom of the page.
Scotland is a land called and chosen for the purposes of God in this hour – an Isaiah 60 nation:
“nations shall come to your light and kings to the brightness of your rising”. Scotland and the move
of God here in Scotland is a prototype for the move of God in the nations. (A prototype “is an early
sample, model or release of a product built to test a concept or process or to act as a thing to be replicated or
learned from.” Wikipedia)
Scotland will be filled with a deep revelation of the finished work of Jesus.
It is time to welcome another large crashing wave of the Holy Spirit across the nation.
There is a new grace for Scotland for God’s fire and glory – a land where the fire of God burns – a land
bringing forth revival, awakening and transformation. A land of signs, wonders and miracles, where
the impossible becomes possible (Mark 11:23; Zech 4:6, 7). A land of creativity and invention. As
God’s Presence moves in the nations, Scotland is called to go into the presence and fire of God’s
passionate love and refining as a forerunner example nation.
The bride/warrior Church is arising in the nation in powerful, intimate, creative, presence-filled
worship that expresses, reveals and releases Scotland’s redemptive destiny and purpose in God.
The Harvest will continue. We should expect its acceleration, and anticipate and work for harvest
both in- and out-of-season over an extended period. There will be a reaping in rest and joy in answer
to tears sown in humility and prayer by many over many years (Ps 126).
There is a continued call for the generations to relate and partner together to release the purposes of
God, His Kingdom and harvest in fullness. As the hearts of the fathers and the children turn to each
other, fatherless-ness will be healed in the land.
There will be a continued coming together across the body of Christ. It will be a nameless, faceless
network of close unity in the glory and nature of Christ. This will release the rule and kingdom of
Christ into the nation (Ps.133, Jn.17, Eph.2:13-22), for example, in united initiatives for prayer and
outreach.
Decree a thing and it
shall be established!
The atmosphere in Scotland is pregnant
with the purposes of God, like a
swelling, spiritual womb. It is time to
speak to the rock (Numbers 20:8) and make
decrees over our land, that a spring of water
might come forth! Here are seven decrees
that we have begun to make over Scotland.
Will you join with us in declaring them over
our land?
1. God has decreed that Scotland would
be a birthplace of revival, awakening
and reformation.
Arise and shine Scotland, for your light has come!
Wake up and be set on fire! The Lord is getting
ready to bring refreshing rain and a double
portion of fruitfulness to this land. There is a
gathering annointing upon this land, including
gathering from other nations. (The enemy’s
counter-decree has been spiritual barrenness
- a closing up the womb of fruitfulness and a
scattering of the people).
2. God decrees that this would be a land
of freedom.
Freedom is written over this land - a land that
cries for freedom, that fights against injustice
and unrighteousness and that defends the family.
There are those who are annointed to be warriors,
those who are worshippers and those who are
intercessors – ‘freedom-makers’. (The enemy’s
counter-decree has been: a land of captivity,
passivity; fear of failure; a spirit of victimisation
that comes from violence; Apathy, unrighteoustolerance;
immobility). People, put on the mantle
of courage, the mantle of the reformer!
3. God decrees Scotland to be an
apostolic land of government, authority
and power!
He is sending us forth to outside the churches
and into the kingdoms of this world, to take back
the things the enemy has stolen. There is a new
reformation in the church so that there might be
transformation through the church. There is an
annointing for the ecclesia of God to control the
destiny of this land. (The enemy’s counter decree
is the rulership of the spirit of religion – form,
but no power - an ineffective, ineffectual church.
Side effects- unusual weariness, partnered with
infirmity, confusion and false accusation). But
God is dealing with false foundations in the land,
such as freemasonry and religious hatred.
4. God decrees that Scotland is a land of
prophets and watchmen.
Be ready for Godly dreams, visions and mysteries
because there is an annointing for the prophetic
in this land. (Of course the enemy has made a
counter-claim - that there would be a resurgence
of paganism and the occult in the land, as well as
false prophets. Jezebel has been silencing voices
and the true prophets of God have been hiding in
caves).
37

5. God decrees that this is a land of
miracles, signs and wonders!
This land and its cities are built on a foundation
of signs and wonders of God. The cities will not
be changed by great programs but through signs
and wonders (Acts 8). (The enemy’s counter has
been that Scotland would be a land known for its
levels of infirmity - ‘the sick man of Europe’; grief
and sorrow of the heart; addiction; hoplessness;
depression).
Make sure you get your
new year off to the best
possible start... in line
with God’s plans for
your life!
6. God has decreed this to be a land of
wealth creation and innovation!
Watch for God bringing a new technology to
old industries that will bring them into the
21st Century and bring an employment boom.
Also look out for new technology creating new
industries. (The enemy’s lie has been to lock up
the people with poverty and welfare dependence.
A spirit of robbery has been GPCset against this nation
- individually and nationally. Financial destitution
- all the jobs go somewhere else. Nation has been
stripped bare of its wealth.
7. We decree that Scotland is a land
covenanted with God and will be a
sheep- nation, not a goat-nation!
38
We declared these decrees with Dr Jane
Hamon at Glasgow Prophetic Centre’s
‘Partnering with Resurrection Power!’
conference, held in Glasgow Cathedral/ St
George’s Tron Church in September 2013.
Mission and Ministry
Along with much of the
church across Scotland,
ICC is having to ‘think
again’ about its ministry.
Our financial difficulties
came to a head in the first
part of 2013, leading us to
make two major decisions
that have had and will
have a massive impact on
our future. We put our
current premises up for
sale in May, and we made
staffing cuts throughout
the summer.
And yet God is faithful.
Like Abraham when called
to leave Harran to go to
Canaan, we’re not exactly
sure about all the details
(Heb 11:8). But we know
the One who is leading us,
longing that Scotland will
be a “better country”
(Heb 11:16) and trusting
that we will have a part in
that. And so we draw on
many encouragements.
We have a buyer for
our building, who
paid the full asking
price and has signed
contracts to
purchase to conclude
in summer 2014 (and
who is also happy for
us to rent afterwards
for a few months, if
we need to).
We’re in the middle
of a property search
and, having viewed
numerous
possibilities since
July, we’re clearer
about what’s out
there and what we
can afford. We hope
to have made a
decision by
Christmas.
There’s a good spirit
among our students,
with a sense of
pulling together and
a pride in being part
of ICC.
We’ve begun to
redesign our
undergraduate
degree programmes
to be cheaper to run,
more flexible, and
more responsive to
the needs of the
church (with more
online/distancelearning
for those
that want it, more
training in context
through internships,
and local tutor
groups if possible).
New partnerships
with DNA and Forge
Scotland will help us
to work together to
train the next
generation of leaders
across Scotland and
beyond.
Demanding Faithfulness
2013 has been a demanding year in SU Scotland, what with
financial challenges, unwanted media attention, protests against
Christian groups having continued access to schools and pressure
on areas of ministry. But the ministry of helping children and
young people explore the Bible and respond to the significance of
Jesus has gone on despite that disheartening backdrop. God has
protected and provided.
He is at work in the Bearsden/Milngavie area
where every school (12 primary and 3
secondary) bar one has an SU Group and Head
Teachers are right behind them. These are just
15 of the 465 SU Groups across Scotland where
pupils have the chance to meet Christians and
hear what the Bible has to say.
He is at work in the fruitful partnership between Circle (a charity that works
with the families of those in prison), Prison Fellowship Scotland and SU
Scotland to enable around 50 children and young people who have a
parent in prison to experience an activity holiday in an environment where
their value to God is lived out as well as explained. ‘People did not care
who you were, there were no boundaries, just acceptance’ was one boy’s
comment about his experience of a holiday. This is part of our commitment
to focus on those who are most disadvantaged in our communities.
20
God has also given us the privilege this year
of working with over 260 senior pupils to help
train and equip them for service. We have
sought to see them grounded in the Bible,
confident in faith sharing, practising prayer,
learning team work, taking responsibility, doing
the ‘menial’ tasks. Part of the vision for 2014 is
that these teenagers will make a difference as
they follow Jesus.

And God has being doing a refining work in us as he has taught us new
dependence on him. He has blown us away with his goodness as we finish
2013 in a much healthier financial position. Although far from painless, God
has brought us to a place where we can look again at moving forward in
areas of ministry where we thought we might have to withdraw.
So what’s ahead in 2014? Perhaps another year of trouble, of temptation
to anxiety? Whatever, we have proved again that trouble is no barrier to
God at work.
Our vision is for expanded work in schools. Bruce Lockhart, one of our team,
recently said, ‘The most frustrating aspect of my job is requests from Head
Teachers for SU Groups that we cannot respond to positively’. Could 2014
be a year for more people to pray for and volunteer to minister in schools
around Scotland?
Our vision for 2014 is that we see many more
children and young people, especially those
who are not presently part of church families,
experiencing a residential event where they see the
gospel in practice and hear it explained creatively
and clearly. The 1,800 who came in 2013 is not
enough! Our vision is that we can partner with
churches and help accelerate their ministry in
reaching more children and young people in their
communities.
But most of all our vision for 2014 is that we remain faithful; trusting
God’s promises, still only teaching his truth and not our ‘great’ ideas,
clinging to him in prayer and waiting on him for his direction.
LOOKING
BACK: 2013
‘THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND AND I’VE SEEN IT FACE
TO FACE…AND I CANNOT BE THE SAME.’
Howard Espie sat beneath the Ethiopian sun, along with around fifteen women, hearing
story after story of how their lives had been transformed, along with thousands of others,
across a country that is best known for its images of poverty and suffering.
At Tearfund Scotland, the highlight of our year has been the privilege of taking several Scottish
church leaders, including Howard, to Ethiopia, to experience this first hand.
Over ten years ago, Tearfund
worked with the Kale Heywet
Church, who have now grown
to nine million members, to
examine what it really meant for
their congregations to be salt
and light. Taking an idea from
India, Tearfund and Kale Heywet
worked together to set up a
programme of Self Help Groups
that offer practical hope for the
poverty that afflicts so many.
24
Rather than giving handouts, the
poorest of the poor come together
to save small amounts of money
each week. Loans are then given to
start small businesses.
A LIFE TRANSFORMED
David McCarthy, Rector at St Silas
Episcopal Church in Glasgow, was
particularly touched by meeting a
lady called Meseret. When Meseret
moved to the city of Nazret with
her husband Belay and their first
child about ten years ago, they were
so poor that some people thought
they were beggars. They lived in a
furnitureless single room and slept
on the floor. Belay fed his family
by bringing home scraps of food he
saved from the lunch he received
while working on a building site.
Despite misgivings about what
could be achieved by saving small

Rev David McCarthy
meeting with Meseret
Rev Howard Espie taking part
in a traditional Ethiopian
coffee ceremony
amounts each week, Meseret
went along to the group where
the training from the church
helped change her mindset
from one of powerlessness and
dependency, to a realisation she
could change her life by tackling
problems alongside others in the
same situation.
When Belay left Nazret to find
work, Meseret had to put this
training into practice to start
making her own living and to pay
the rent, so she took out a loan to
buy charcoal and started selling
it. Her first step on the Self Help
Group journey had been taken
and she was soon able to feed her
children well.
Quickly Meseret came to see
that the group provided not just
savings and loan opportunities,
but a social setting that soon
began to feel like family, where
problems could be shared
and addressed and a sense of
community fostered.
Meseret’s confidence has grown
and she now runs hairdressing
and jewellery-making businesses
as well as doing a part-time job at
a local council. The 29-year-old’s
next plan is to open a shop.
Meseret said, ‘The economic
change has been very significant.
We have bought land and built
a house but this is just the
beginning. I have great plans for
the future.’
Meseret uses her newfound
confidence to speak up for women
and children’s rights or as she puts
it to be ‘a voice for the voiceless’.
LOOKING TOWARDS 2014
Most Self Help Group members
start their saving by cutting out
a cup of coffee every day to give
them the few pence needed to
change their future. In solidarity
with them, Tearfund Scotland’s
focus in 2014 is to encourage
people to save the cost of a
coffee a week and instead to
give this £10 a month to help
establish a new Self Help Group.
Our goal is to galvanise support
from Scotland that will enable
But she admits the biggest change
is spiritually.
‘Self Help Groups are not just
about economic change, it’s
about a life change with Jesus.
It was a great privilege for me
to join the group and to come
to know Christ. I’ve a clear view
now of what I believe and who
my God is.’
a further 500 Self Help Groups
to start in Ethiopia, helping
thousands more people like
Meseret use their ideas and skills
to set up small businesses and
improve their children’s futures.
All this will take is 500 people
giving £10 a month.
Howard has already committed to
this vision ‘I’m going to do it one
cup at a time too. We’ve got to
cast this vision. It’s life changing
and it’s simply beautiful.’
Help Group programme visit www.tearfund.org/startup or call us
SCOTLAND
Urban Saints Scotland has seen an exciting year - we have
seen our team grow, the number of churches we engage with
through our resource Energize and the number of training
events has increased.
Most exciting is seeing churches and youth leaders sharing
their faith with children and young people.
And so what does God have for Urban Saints Scotland in 2014?
• Our aim is to support and resource churches in Scotland, to pass on faith to the next generations.
Churches can take a lead role in making a future-changing difference in their communities.
• Urban Saints Scotland resources and equips churches whether they have a vibrant youth
programme which needs a facelift or where churches have no youngsters and they have no idea
where to start. ‘Help! Our Church has No Kids’ is a bespoke ministry programme where the team can
offer training for churches or a group of churches, plus ongoing support as they begin the wild
and wonderful adventure of youth and children’s ministry. Check it out at www.nokids.org.uk
• Spree in the Borders, 13 th -15 th June 2014 is for youth groups filled with fun, action, inspiration and
activities from kayaking to crafts! Spree is designed to let them enjoy a great weekend, build
relationships with each other and with God.
• Youth events such as Firewall in Ayrshire and day conferences such as Refuel in Skye have
packed programmes for this year.
• In 2014 and 2015, Urban Saints Scotland has three opportunities for teenagers to travel overseas
to impact lives in a profound and meaningful way. Respond trips give wonderful opportunities
to join a team from across Scotland and help run kid’s clubs and camps, serve by doing some
practical tasks and understand what life is like living in a different culture. In 2014 a team hope to
travel to Romania to continue to serve the church in the south east of the country.
For over 100 years Urban Saints (formerly known as Crusaders) has been pioneering local youth and
children’s work throughout the UK. By linking in with Urban Saints Scotland, you will get access to
PERSECUTED
CHRISTIANS
T
hanks
to our supporters who
have generously given of
their time, money and other
resources Release International has
been able to help many Christians
around the world who have been
persecuted because of their faith in
2013. At Release International in
Scotland we are hugely encouraged
when we look back over the year and
see how that support has changed
lives. Here are just a few examples:
Together we have prayed brothers
and sisters out of prison who
have been jailed because of their
Christian faith.
We have helped families whose
breadwinners have been
imprisoned for their faith.
We have helped our brothers and
sisters in Egypt, who have come to
the Christian faith from Islam.
We have campaigned for and
petitioned on behalf of persecuted
Christians in India.
We have held Shalom camps
to encourage pastors and their
churches who face difficult times
serving God in their communities.
We have helped Christians of all
ages in Nigeria who have been
injured or lost family members
by providing emergency medical
treatment and trauma healing
We have helped persecuted
Christians set up incomegenerating
small businesses.
As well as supporting the work
through prayer and donations a
number of supporters have taken
part in sponsored events and other
income-generating activities as well
as writing cards of encouragement
to Christian prisoners of faith and
representing Release and persecuted
Christians in their churches. Your
support is truly encouraging and
inspirational.
HELPING EGYPTIAN
BELIEVERS IN 2014
As we look to the future we know that
the need this coming year will be as
great as ever especially in countries
that are going through periods of
We want to help Christians to rebuild
their lives in Egypt.
instability. In Egypt we would like
to encourage those who have come
to the Christian faith from Islam
by continuing to provide training
and discipleship courses for them.
These new believers are frequently
rejected by their family and friends
so knowing that Christians elsewhere
are supporting them is a huge
encouragement.
Please pray for the many
Christians in Egypt whose churches,
businesses and homes were damaged
or destroyed during the recent
violence. We want to help these
Christians to rebuild their lives and
with your support in 2014 we know
that much can be accomplished. So
please join us in serving Christ and
our persecuted family together. For
From all at Release International
we wish you a truly blessed Christmas
and a peaceful new year.
