He received his first degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Padua in
1971. After this first degree, he continued his academic enrichment specializing in
both Legal Medicine and in Toxicology at the same University. His formal education
concluded with advanced training carried out in US Universities, where he was
involved in the development of an applied research program focused on the Legal
Medicine, Analytical and Behavioural Toxicology fields. On his return from the US,
he was assigned the roles of Researcher, then Adjunct Professor and finally
Associate Professor at the University of Padova and the University of Ancona. He
continued his career achieving the title of Full Professor in 1990 at the University of
Parma. Additionally, from 1989-90 to 1996 he acted as Director of the Legal
Medicine Institute at the University of Ancona as well as the Director of the
Specialization School at the University of Parma.
Since 1996 he has been Full Professor at the University of Padova and
contemporarily was named Director of the Forensic Toxicology and Antidoping
Complex Structure of Padova University-Hospital. In 1999 he was nominated
Director of the Specialization School of Legal Medicine at the University of
Padova.
During his tenure in Padova, among his other duties, he focused on the promotion
and development of an International Center of Forensic and Behavioural
Toxicology involved in providing clinical assistance as well as applied research. To
date this Center is made up of over 25 clinicians and researchers with degrees and
specialties in various areas including physics, chemistry, and medicine, biology who
promote research on the effects of pharmaceuticals, drugs, toxins and doping
substances.
He is the author of more than 350 publications including books and articles in both
national and international, peer reviewed journals. An alphabetical, not exhaustive,

He received diverse national and international scientific awards including the
Widmark Award, Australia 1995.
He acted as Chairman, moderator and speaker in numerous International
conferences/congresses in the areas of Legal Medicine, Forensic Sciences,
Toxicology and other related disciplines.
He acted as consultant for the United Nations - Drug Control Programme and the
World Health Organization - Division of Mental Health developing and directing
social-sanitary health programs in Asia, South America and Africa in the arena of
Legal Medicine and Forensic Toxicology.
As a culmination of his scientific activities with high social impact, he developed and
enacted in the Veneto region a prevention campaign regarding “Saturday night
massacres” caused by the abuse of alcohol and drugs. This was the first such
campaign of its kind in Italy. Considering its social importance, he was awarded 1st
Prize in the National Competition of the Milan Press Circle in 1995.
Since 1990 he has directed and actively managed the International Program of
Proficiency Testing on Psychoactive Substances in which over 180 laboratories
from 12 European countries participate.
Since 1990 he is the Regional Representative of The International Association of
Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT).
From 1994 he served as Editor of the International Journal of Legal Medicine, and
Member of the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety.
In 1997 he was President of "35° World Congress of The International Association
of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT)".
From 1999-2000 he was Member of the Scientific Commission "Antidoping" of the
Italian Federation of Football (FIGC).

In 2000 he was President of the “Joint Meeting ibc 2000 Medical Laboratory of
physical exercise: from biochemistry to doping and analytical tests” as well as of the
2nd “European Symposium on Workplace Drug Testing”.
From 2001 to 2005 he was a Member of the National Commission of the Ministry of
Health for the “Control of Doping and Health Protection in Sporting Events”
Since 2002 he has been Member of the National Commission in the area of “Drugs
Addiction” of the Ministry of Health, Work and Social Welfare.
From 2004 to 2007 he was Secretary of the Italian Society of Legal Medicine.
From 2007 to 2010 he was Vice President Vicar of the Italian Society of Legal
Medicine.
From 2009 he was Vice President European Council of Legal Medicine.
From 2009 to 2012 he was President-Representative of the European Academy of
Legal Medicine and a Member of the Presidium Board of the International Academy
of Legal Medicine.
From 2010 he was Editorial Board Member, Archiv für Kriminologie and Honorary
Member of the German Society of Legal Medicine.
