He received his first degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Padua in<br />
1971. After this first degree, he continued his academic enrichment specializing in<br />
both Legal Medicine and in Toxicology at the same University. His formal education<br />
concluded with advanced training carried out in US Universities, where he was<br />
involved in the development of an applied research program focused on the Legal<br />
Medicine, Analytical and Behavioural Toxicology fields. On his return from the US,<br />
he was assigned the roles of Researcher, then Adjunct <strong>Prof</strong>essor and finally<br />
Associate <strong>Prof</strong>essor at the University of Padova and the University of Ancona. He<br />
continued his career achieving the title of Full <strong>Prof</strong>essor in 1990 at the University of<br />
Parma. Additionally, from 1989-90 to 1996 he acted as Director of the Legal<br />
Medicine Institute at the University of Ancona as well as the Director of the<br />
Specialization School at the University of Parma.<br />
Since 1996 he has been Full <strong>Prof</strong>essor at the University of Padova and<br />
contemporarily was named Director of the Forensic Toxicology and Antidoping<br />
Complex Structure of Padova University-Hospital. In 1999 he was nominated<br />
Director of the Specialization School of Legal Medicine at the University of<br />
Padova.<br />
During his tenure in Padova, among his other duties, he focused on the promotion<br />
and development of an International Center of Forensic and Behavioural<br />
Toxicology involved in providing clinical assistance as well as applied research. To<br />
date this Center is made up of over 25 clinicians and researchers with degrees and<br />
specialties in various areas including physics, chemistry, and medicine, biology who<br />
promote research on the effects of pharmaceuticals, drugs, toxins and doping<br />
substances.<br />
He is the author of more than 350 publications including books and articles in both<br />
national and international, peer reviewed journals. An alphabetical, not exhaustive,<br />

He received diverse national and international scientific awards including the<br />
Widmark Award, Australia 1995.<br />
He acted as Chairman, moderator and speaker in numerous International<br />
conferences/congresses in the areas of Legal Medicine, Forensic Sciences,<br />
Toxicology and other related disciplines.<br />
He acted as consultant for the United Nations - Drug Control Programme and the<br />
World Health Organization - Division of Mental Health developing and directing<br />
social-sanitary health programs in Asia, South America and Africa in the arena of<br />
Legal Medicine and Forensic Toxicology.<br />
As a culmination of his scientific activities with high social impact, he developed and<br />
enacted in the Veneto region a prevention campaign regarding “Saturday night<br />
massacres” caused by the abuse of alcohol and drugs. This was the first such<br />
campaign of its kind in Italy. Considering its social importance, he was awarded 1st<br />
Prize in the National Competition of the Milan Press Circle in 1995.<br />
Since 1990 he has directed and actively managed the International Program of<br />
<strong>Prof</strong>iciency Testing on Psychoactive Substances in which over 180 laboratories<br />
from 12 European countries participate.<br />
Since 1990 he is the Regional Representative of The International Association of<br />
Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT).<br />
From 1994 he served as Editor of the International Journal of Legal Medicine, and<br />
Member of the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety.<br />
In 1997 he was President of "35° World Congress of The International Association<br />
of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT)".<br />
From 1999-2000 he was Member of the Scientific Commission "Antidoping" of the<br />
Italian Federation of Football (FIGC).<br />

In 2000 he was President of the “Joint Meeting ibc 2000 Medical Laboratory of<br />
physical exercise: from biochemistry to doping and analytical tests” as well as of the<br />
2nd “European Symposium on Workplace Drug Testing”.<br />
From 2001 to 2005 he was a Member of the National Commission of the Ministry of<br />
Health for the “Control of Doping and Health Protection in Sporting Events”<br />
Since 2002 he has been Member of the National Commission in the area of “Drugs<br />
Addiction” of the Ministry of Health, Work and Social Welfare.<br />
From 2004 to 2007 he was Secretary of the Italian Society of Legal Medicine.<br />
From 2007 to 2010 he was Vice President Vicar of the Italian Society of Legal<br />
Medicine.<br />
From 2009 he was Vice President European Council of Legal Medicine.<br />
From 2009 to 2012 he was President-Representative of the European Academy of<br />
Legal Medicine and a Member of the Presidium Board of the International Academy<br />
of Legal Medicine.<br />
From 2010 he was Editorial Board Member, Archiv für Kriminologie and Honorary<br />
Member of the German Society of Legal Medicine.<br />
