Annual Report

Our Mission:
Enriching lives through quality
services and Christian care.
Our Vision:
2010
Annual Report
to be the premier retirement
community of choice.
2010 will be remembered as an incredible year in Bartels history as we made progress towards
mapping our future and setting plans into motion. Moving forward in our quest for culture change
included helping residents live their lives to the fullest and enhancing an important campus project –
Bartels Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Changes in our operations resulted in hiring a new
full-time Chaplain, Pastor Al Bidne, to lead our Christian ministry; and promoting Teresa Krueger to
licensed Administrator for Woodland Terrace and Evergreen Arbor. In addition to making significant
progress towards improving services for our residents, our hard work was validated during the annual
state DIA survey process. Our financial position improved in 2010, despite the slow economic
environment and progress was demonstrated in clinical quality measures and customer satisfaction
survey scores.
A glimpse into our future looks like this – we are seeking opportunities to better serve the community
and to offer more choices/services for our residents. We continue to focus on our Resident’s First
philosophy to help our staff prioritize their daily activities, and to place a high priority on our culture
change initiative which gives basic individualized life choices to the residents. We are in a major
transformation in Woodland Terrace as we strive to create the “ideal” nursing center. Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community is poised for growth, change and new opportunities in 2011 and beyond. Our
strategic goals for the future include: Growth in Continuum, Growth in Development Funds, Continued
Focus on Quality First and Emphasis on Community. We remain focused on our mission of “Enriching
lives through quality services and Christian care” which lays the foundation for our vision, “To be the
premier retirement community of choice.”
“We are so excited to begin utilizing the
new space; we won’t have to ‘simulate’
tasks – now we can do them, just like they
would be done at home.”
Healing
Taylor Physical Therapy Associates
continues to work in close partnership with
Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community to meet
the needs of individuals in our community. Within
the assisted living and nursing home settings, therapists
work closely with nursing staff to ensure that
every resident is functioning at their highest level,
from getting up and getting dressed in the morning
to walking to activities. People suffering a set-back
due to injury or illness can rest comfortably in the
skilled nursing and rehabilitation wing, knowing
that all staff are working together to help them reach
their goal of returning home as soon as possible.
Collective input from the community, nursing and
therapy staff has been compiled to ensure that the
new skilled wing will meet and exceed needs of
those individuals recovering from hospitalization.
The new rehab space will allow therapists to focus
on optimizing the function of patients; working in a
realistic environment on those tasks which matter
most to them.

The interaction between residents is observed
daily at Bartels in the dining room, through activities
and as they live side by side. However, intergenerational
relationships are not always as apparent. Over the past
four years, Myrtle Waidelich has been making
connections with various Wartburg students through the
“Aging in a Changing Society” course and the
Adopt-A-Grandparent program. “I have really seen some
of them grow up through the years. There are things
these students do that I wouldn’t think of doing and
things I have experienced that they can’t believe!” says
Waidelich.
Residents also enjoy interaction with elementary school
students who partake in various activities alongside
them. Ruth Dreier likes when the kids come; she thinks
they like to visit as well. “One of the girls that visits
always looks for me so she can sit by me,” Dreier says.
The connections that are made between the residents
and these youth are irreplaceable. Lessons are learned
by all and memories are made that will last a lifetime.

Sharing
“At St. Paul’s, we are grateful for our partnership with Bartels.
The fifth graders develop special relationships with their friends
through monthly visits. These experiences provide opportunities
for students to hear the life stories and appreciate the gifts of
senior friends. They become comfortable visiting with seniors and
learn to love and respect the older generation.”
-Principal Christi Lines

“Everybody needs a leader and a servant at one time or
another, so that he may be reasonably happy in this life
and be supremely happy with Him forever in the next.”
-Bob Smith, Woodland Terrace Resident
Connecting

As chaplain of Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community, I am one to whom the Apostle Paul refers
as a ‘steward of the mysteries of God.’ (I Cor. 4:1) That
is, one who has received the truths of Jesus and His love
from others, made it a part of his or her own faith story
and shares those truths with others. With that
understanding, the residents are also ‘stewards of the
mysteries of God’, as are the staff who work here, those
who visit and those who support the continued ministry
of Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community. Individually,
our ‘stewardship of the mysteries of God’ is being shared
through our unique place in life – regardless of age or
circumstance. Together, it is what connects us to those
who have gone before us, those around us and those who
shall follow us. At Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community, the ‘mysteries of God’ are being received,
lived and shared in thought, word and deed.
- Pastor Al Bidne

Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community’s
mission of enriching lives through quality services and
Christian care extends to all levels of care in the
Bartels community. The vision for Eisenach Village,
Bartels newest development, came from a desire to
provide true independent living for active adults in the
spectrum of the Bartels continuum of care. The
townhome neighborhood marked one year of serving
active adults over the age of 55 in late 2010.
Eisenach Village is a unique type of active adult
community with a focus on freedom... freedom from the
chores and home maintenance of everyday life and
freedom to experience the lifestyle, leisure and learning
that the community offers. Eisenach Village showcases
architecturally appealing and thoughtfully designed
homes with amenities to enhance a carefree lifestyle
and match the interests and desires of active adults. It
is located just north of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community campus and west of the Wartburg College
campus.

“I have a sense of security living at Eisenach Village. It’s
good to have people around that care.”
-Kirsten Hafferman, Eisenach Village Resident
Embracing

“I love being here; I enjoy the activities, the food and the
staff. It’s a very nice place to be if you can’t be alone.”
-Margaret Coddington
Enriching

Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community is
a leading Cedar Valley provider of accommodation, care
and services for seniors. Our ‘residents first’ philosophy
is built on a 57-year history of enriching lives with
choices in community living, warm hospitality and
compassionate care. Because we understand that senior
living means different things to different people, our
lifestyle services are aimed at respecting and honoring
residents individually. We offer a variety of living
choices: Life at Eisenach Village, our 55+ active adult
living community, allows residents to take back their
weekends with maintenance free living. Eichhorn Haus
independent living offers a safe and secure environment
of apartment style living without the hassles of home
ownership. The personalized, supportive services and
health care at Linden Place assisted living are designed
to help residents with their daily living activities. Our
staff works with a shared commitment to meet the
lifestyle changes and diverse needs of our residents and
their families.

Each year, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community
continues to advance its mission of enriching lives
through quality services and Christian care. Thank you
for your generous support to the annual fund and the
Bartels Memorial Foundation. Each gift helps to make a
difference in the lives of our residents and ensures the
continuance of our chaplaincy program and
resident-focused activities through art, music and
horticultural therapy. We are grateful for your
partnership in our mission.
-Barb Bridges
Vice President of Marketing & Development

Giving
“Each area of [my] service has enhanced the others. My time
as a volunteer has deepened my understanding of Bartels, and
I use that knowledge while making decisions on the Board of
Directors and Trustees. I’ve learned through my experience on
the Board how charitable contributions directly affect the lives
of Bartels’ residents. My goal has been to help make Bartels a
better place, and I hope I’ve done that.”
-Gene Drape, Bartels Friends for the Future

Friends for the Future is composed of individuals who have chosen to support
Bartels through a Memorial Foundation gift of $10,000 or more. We are grateful for each
planned gift that helps secure the future of our mission.
We are grateful for each gift, and know how important it is to our donors to respect their
wishes and assure that every donation made will be used to support the needs of Bartels
friends and neighbors. Direction for planned gifts may be considered for the following:
• The Bartels Memorial Foundation: Established in 1984, the endowment fund strengthens
Bartels with funds to meet needs of today’s residents and to assure care for residents in the
future.
• The Bartels Chaplaincy Endowment Fund: Established in 1997, this fund supports Bartels’
Christian mission and commitment to serving the spiritual needs of its residents and assures
the presence of full-time Chaplaincy services at Bartels in the future. A financial gift to the
Chaplaincy Endowment, allows you leave a part of yourself, your values and your Christian
heritage to future generations.
• The Bartels Good Shepherd Fund: Established in 2009, this is a benevolent assistance fund
designed for our residents who need additional financial aid to cover the full cost of their care.
Your gift means helping to keep a promise to our residents and offers an opportunity to bless
others through a generous gift. It’s the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor that adds strength
and kindness to our mission.

Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community is grateful for the support received from
Businesses & Organizations through sponsorship of Bartels programs and activities
and through direct donations. We thank these generous community leaders for investing in
Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community was
founded upon the spirit of giving. Though
primarily funded by resident fees, Bartels
Lutheran Retirement Community depends on
additional funding to enhance the quality of life
for our residents and help us continue to meet
our mission of enriching lives through quality
services and Christian care.
To learn more about ways to give:
• visit www.bartelscommunity.org
• call (319) 352-4540
• e-mail bbridges@bartelscommunity.org

Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community offers
a full range of services on a 20-acre
campus: nursing care, skilled
nursing and rehab, Alzheimer’s/
dementia care, assisted living and
independent living. With its
Christian-based mission and
residents first philosophy,
Bartels gives residents peace of
mind knowing they can move to a
higher level of care when needed
without having to leave the
community they call home.
Waverly’s only nursing center has
evolved from a “home for the aged”
in 1954 to a multilevel retirement
community, offering a full range of
health care and retirement living
services on one campus today.
Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community recently expanded its
vision with the addition of
Eisenach Village, a townhome style
living community that serves
active adults over the age of 55.
Eisenach Village is located just
north of Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community on over 30
acres.
