Strid Celebrate falling leaves, marching bands, harvest, patriotism and the message of Veterans Day with this creative program resource packed with materials and suggestions to customize your production and involve students in the process of putting on a show! You may have noticed a chill in the air these past few mornings; the days are getting shorter and Jack Frost has touched all the trees with his icy paint brush, turning the leaves to gold. What a perfect time to celebrate the glorious autumn season. What a perfect night (day) for a Fall Festival! Yes, Jack Frost, that little rascal, has put ice on the ponds and … (approaching Adult, pulling on his coat and interrupting) Uh…excuse me, (fill in the adult’s name), I hate to have to tell you this, but there is no such person as Jack Frost. What!? (approaching the other two) That’s right. We learned about the seasons in science. You see, when the earth tilts on its axis, it causes the Northern hemisphere to be farther away from the sun, resulting in shorter days and colder temperatures. That’s what causes autumn…not Jack Frost. But…but…what about the leaves changing color? How does that happen? Sunlight helps trees make food with some green stuff called chlorophyll. When the days get short, there’s less light and the chlorophyll goes away, so the leaves change color. Everyone knows that! (to the audience) Right? And everyone knows the very best thing about autumn is… (shouting) …jumping in the leaves! SoNG 1: AUTUMN DAYS ARe HeRe That was great! Now that I think about it, I remember learning about photosynthesis just a few short years ago when I was in elementary school. (pausing, putting his hand to his ear to listen) I think I hear something. It sounds like…no, it couldn’t be. It sounds like a parade. Why would anyone want to have a parade now? It’s not even close to the Fourth of July! (insert adult’s name), the parade is for Veterans Day. Ohhh! Of course. We celebrate Veterans Day to thank all the people who have served in our country’s military. They have given so much to us; let’s give them a big “thank you.” (with sincerity) Thank you, veterans! (All turn and point off stage right.) Look! Here comes the band! They’re here! Hooray! etc. ad. lib. hELPFuL TEAChEr TiPS Song 2: HeRe CoMeS THe BAND Grades K-1 Musical Concepts Instruments Movement Costumes extensions • Steady Beat – Clap the beat; move the beat to other parts of the body. • Music moves in sets of two • Move appropriately with the music – March in place. • Crescendo and Decrescendo – When a parade is approaching, the sound gets louder; as it goes away, the music gets softer. • Timbre/band instruments – Identify brass and percussion instruments by sight and sound. • Listening – the music of John Philip Sousa • Play a hand drum or snare drum on the beat. • Have a student carry a flag as he/she and a snare drummer lead several of the students in a small parade. • March in place. • Band members could wear construction paper headbands with either a white star on a blue band or a blue star on a band of red and white stripes. Allow students to combine colors as they desire. • Red, white or blue vests made of bulletin-board paper. Decorate with studentmade stars of contrasting colors. • Social Studies/History: Learn the significance of the colors on the U.S. flag; the significance of the stars and stripes; flag etiquette; story of Betsy Ross and the first U.S. flag; why we have parades; patriotism. • Science: colors red, white, blue • Shapes: stars (make out of triangles), rectangle (flag shape, stripes) • Art: Have students create and color pictures of brass instruments; enlarge the best ones to mount on cardboard as props for the program.
