Mississippi Housing
Hall of Fame inducts Mims
With 2009 Hall of Fame Chairman Gary
Jenkins presiding and surrounded by fellow
members, past Hall of Fame inductees,
proud friends and family, William Jervis
Mims of Hattiesburg was celebrated
during ceremonies June 5 at the Home
Builders Association of Mississippi State
Convention in Sandestin, Fla. HBAM
dedicates one night of its annual gathering
to recognize exceptional industry leaders
with its highest honor, the Mississippi
Housing Hall of Fame.
As seen on the list of past inductees on
page 8, this group is both impressive and
elite. Inclusion in the Hall of Fame salutes
the outstanding contributions of these
individuals to housing in Mississippi, the
building industry and the association. The
Housing Hall of Fame is the pinnacle for
those who have made a lifelong commitment
through their work within the home
building industry and
their communities.
A graduate of Forrest
County AHS in Brooklyn,
Miss., Jervis Mims
attended the University
of Southern Mississippi
and served in the United
States Naval Reserve
from 1952 until 1960. He grew up around
the building business, working with his
uncle, who was a local builder, while still
in high school. While at the University
of Southern Mississippi, he even worked
part-time with a commercial contractor
building dorms and fraternity homes.
Jervis Mims is the type of man the Hall
of Fame designation was created to honor.
A pioneer in establishing the home
builders association chapter at the local and
state levels, his legacy in the home building
industry started in the
1950s, when he worked
as a carpenter and
evolved with the establishment
of his own
home building business
in 1957, Mims Real Estate
and Construction.
In 1956, he and his
bride, Floy, were the
proud occupants of a
custom Mims home.
Even then- Hattiesburg
Mayor Moran Pope
JERVIS MIMS
became a Mims man –
contracting with the
young builder for his own new home. In
December of 1962, Mims was a charter
member of what is now the Greater
Hattiesburg Home Builders Association,
going on to serve as secretary and vice
president, as well as president four times.
In 1977 and again in 1985, the Hattiesburg
Area Home Builders Association named
him Builder of the Year.
In 1971, Mims served as HBAM secretary/
treasurer, vice president the following year
HBAM invades Florida!
Builders head to Sandestin for
annual state convention
Armed with flip flops, lotion and shades, Mississippi builders and their
families packed up the wagons and made the trip to sunny Florida for the
46th annual Home Builders Association of Mississippi State Convention!
The Hilton Sandestin Beach and Golf Resort became home for members and
guests, who fully enjoyed the endless array of sports, activities, shopping and
restaurants offered in this grand location. And the spectacular beach setting was
a little bit of paradise every single day.
After a first full Thursday of registration, several committee meetings and a trade
show, the annual Welcome Party that night officially rang in State Convention 46!
Guests feasted on fabulous fare, enjoyed the live music and caught up with friends
from around the state. The next morning was kicked off with the Spike & Sponsor
Appreciation Breakfast and HBAM Past Presidents Breakfast, thanking each of
these groups for their service to the association. Trey Copeland of Harris, Jernigan
& Geno PLLC in Ridgeland, presented “Nuts & Bolts of Construction Defect Law”
to an attentive CPB continuing education audience.
Following morning committee meetings was a noon shotgun start of the Golf
Tournament at Sandestin’s stunning Baytowne Golf Club. Standouts included
members of the 1st Place Team (Gross): Spencer Justin, Steve Ward, Dick Thompson,
Lance Conn and John Dowdle; and 1st Place Team (Net): Craig Flanagan, Burt
Williamson, Gene Clearman and Jonathan Boone.
Meanwhile, HBAM ladies were in for a real treat at Seagar’s for the Ladies
Brunch. Acknowledged as the most elegant, five-star dining setting along the
Emerald Coast, guests were delighted with a cooking demonstration by one of
Seagar’s renowned chefs!
4 JULY/AUGUST 2009 MISSISSIPPI BUILDER

The 2009 Mississippi Housing Hall of
Fame induction ceremony was the perfect
end to a full convention Day 2. Truly setting
the standard as a builder member, Jervis
Mims of Hattiesburg was fittingly honored
as the latest Hall of Fame inductee among
an admiring audience of fellow members
and proud family. (See Hall of Fame article,
page 3). The celebration continued afterward
as guests explored the entertainment
and fun of Baytowne Wharf.
Robert Denk of the National Association
of Home Builders helped kick off Day 3,
with another great educational opportunity,
presenting “Mississippi Economic Forecast:
House Prices & Production,” as CPB
continuing education. HBAM got down to
business at the Board of Directors meeting,
followed by a seaside luncheon honoring
Build PAC members.
And then it was time: The 18th Annual
Lloyd “Bulldog” Burton Volleyball Tournament
hit the Florida sand. After much
sweat, but no visible blood or tears, the
beach battle was over. Coming out on top
of the coastal clash was the Region 4 team,
co-coached by Gene Buckles and Craig
Flanagan, including Burt Williamson,
Jonathan Boone, Richard Hiatt, Todd
Schneider, Dillon Waggoner, Willie
Alexander and David Saulters.
What better way to wrap up a big day
and great convention than…a BBQ Beach
Party! Members threw on their flip flops
and headed down to the seaside shindig
complete with delectable dishes, groovy
tunes and bebopping builders. Though no
predictions that Dancing With the Stars will
be calling, guests of every age hit the floor
to dance out the night and a weekend
of fun for all.
Don’t forget to mark your 2010 calendars
now, as HBAM will be headed back to
sunny Sandestin again next year, June 3-6.
Thanks to everyone who attended to make
2009 a smashing success!
and then led the organization as president
in 1973. That same year, he was included
in the National Association of Home
Builders Lifetime Spike Hall of Fame. He
continues to serve as an NAHB Lifetime
Board of Directors member and a Life
Spike. Also in 1973, NAHB presented Mims
with an Honor Award for Outstanding
Achievement in Membership Development
at its national convention. In 1980, he was
again recognized by NAHB as membership
chairman and in 1984 as a Designated
Lifetime National Director.
In nominating Jervis Mims to the Hall
of Fame, Bobby Rayburn noted, “Jervis is a
role model in home building circles. As the
last remaining charter member of the
Hattiesburg Area Home Builders Association,
younger construction professionals have
called on him for guidance and advice.
In 1964, Mims and four other local
home builder association members adopted
and promoted a ‘Code of Ethics’ for the
chapter. This adopted code of ethics was
used as a guide to screen applicants who
wished to join the Hattiesburg chapter.
The Greater Hattiesburg Home Builders
Association is what it is today because of
the legacy that was established by Mims
and four other building pioneers.
More importantly than all of these facts
is how he has positively affected the lives
of hundreds of families that have enjoyed
his custom-built homes – over 45 years
of quality-built construction.”
In 1968, Mims was appointed to the
Forrest County AHS School Board. In
1970, he was appointed by Governor John
Bell Williams to the Forrest County School
Board for a six-year term. He received a
Service Award from the Forrest County
School Board in 1976. In 1998, he was
appointed by the Forrest County Board
of Supervisors to the Forrest County Park
Commission and served until 2001. During
his service on this board, numerous
industrial prospects were recruited, which
created hundreds of jobs in the Hattiesburg
community.
In the late 1970s, Mims began to develop
a subdivision that was over 200 acres. He
ecognized the desire of many to own
larger lots in a more environmentally
friendly setting. The average lot size in this
development is two acres and the first
home constructed continues to be occupied
by Mims and his wife.
Mims’ vision for an ethical, professional
membership was demonstrated by his
Product Roundup – Exteriors
Unafraid of the dark side
Norandex’s Great Barrier and Reynolds Grand Junction
vinyl siding recently expanded their palettes with the addition
of four darker hues to the premium siding lines.
In addition to 15 classic colors, the
deeper shades of Russet, Steel Blue,
Evergreen and Firebrick are now among
the companies’ siding options thanks to
advanced technology that protects these
hues against fading.
The new colors are protected by Norandex
ColorHold technology and guaranteed
with a lifetime limited fade-protection
warranty. The acrylic-fused capstock
prevents the vinyl from developing a
whitish film from its exposure to ultraviolet
rays, air and moisture.
If you or one of your customers would
like to see what the dark siding would look
like on a particular home or model,
the companies’ new HomeVisions design
visualization tool will let you take the
guesswork out of choosing from a small
swatch, paint chip or product sample.
Simply choose a style of home from the
photos on Norandex’s Web site or upload a
photo of your home onto the site. A design
professional will contact you in a couple of
days for an in-home visit so you can see
firsthand what new siding, roofing, windows
or doors will look like on a particular
house before a hammer is even lifted.
For best results when photographing
your home, move cars, bikes and other
moveable objects out of the way so you
get a clear shot of your home. Take a highresolution
photo straight-on during the
day, with the sun at your back if possible.
Four new darker shades guaranteed not
to fade have been added to Norandex/
Reynolds’ premium siding lines.
Fill the frame or viewfinder with your
entire home in landscape format rather
than portrait.
The interactive service is free. For more
information, visit www.norandex.com.
