Within days <strong>of</strong> their opening, The<br />
McCormick Tribune Campus<br />
Center and State Street Village<br />
changed the entire landscape <strong>of</strong><br />
campus life at IIT. Today, these<br />
buildings, alive with students 24/7,<br />
provide dynamic new spaces in<br />
which to live, study, and play.<br />
With enhanced dining options, a pr<strong>of</strong>essionally<br />
run bookstore, ample staff and community meeting<br />
spaces, <strong>of</strong>fices for student life—plus modern<br />
technology ranging from computer stations to<br />
computer-monitored laundry services—these<br />
new buildings have sparked a renewed school<br />
spirit seen throughout campus:<br />
• The number <strong>of</strong> IIT students involved in varsity<br />
sports has doubled over the past four years,<br />
thanks to the leadership <strong>of</strong> new Athletic Director<br />
Lee Hitchen and the introduction <strong>of</strong> varsity<br />
women’s and men’s soccer teams.<br />
• IIT students founded 25 new organizations last<br />
year alone, including a Lacrosse Club, Model UN,<br />
and Mock Trial team.<br />
Preserving Our Heritage<br />
As our new buildings continue to enhance<br />
student life, IIT is working to preserve our historic<br />
Mies van der Rohe-designed buildings.<br />
Leading this effort is the Mies van der Rohe<br />
Society, which is committed to restoring Mies’ IIT<br />
buildings to their original beauty and repurposing<br />
them to support cutting-edge academic programs.<br />
• The Campus Center has served as a gathering<br />
place for dozens <strong>of</strong> activities—many <strong>of</strong> which<br />
saw record participation last year—including the<br />
Taste <strong>of</strong> IIT, Homecoming Week, the Student<br />
Organization Fair, and Alumnifest.<br />
