Presentation and Operations
Wow! We did it again!
Sean Z. here, organizer and president of Bent-Con.
When I first proposed Bent-Con a few years ago, I
had no idea how large Bent-Con would grow. My
expectations were exceeded from the start and I
am even more amazed now. You great, wonderful,
awesome, incredible people keep coming. You all
keep bringing your magic to the event. In doing so,
you challenge us to be better and better each year. I
hope we’re meeting that challenge.
This year’s theme is Brave New World. With all
of our cultural victories, we really are creating
an awesome new space where everyone—gay,
straight, bi, trans*, alien, elf, Mi-go—are welcomed
and celebrated. Indeed, with the advent of our
new Rainbow Connection event, we’ve now
incorporated one more to our ever growing and
wonderful list of audiences: youth and families.
Look around. Say hi. Thank all the wonderful
volunteers, vendors and special guests who
contributed their time, energy and enthusiasm to
Bent-Con 2013. Enjoy yourself!
And don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back.
Because you also help make it happen. :-)
PUSHING NEW BOUNDARIES IN LGBTQ COMICS
slice-of-life world of autobiography, LGBTQ characters and
SCIENCE IN SCI-FI: WHY A LITTLE
REALISM REALLY HELPS SELL A BOOK
Why are critics so hard on my scifi when it’s just a romance?
What do readers want anyway? It’s a romance not [insert famous
sci-fi show here]. Writers often set their romances in a
futuristic world without working out what that world is and
how it functions. Then they get dismayed when the book is
nitpicked to death by readers and critics alike. Settings are
important. Join Kevin Grazier, a real-life rocket scientist and
consultant on TV shows like Battlestar Galactica and Eureka,
and follow their own sets of rules. Readers, come on by and
RACE AND CLASS IN COMICS
Queer comic book characters have finally started coming out
of the closet and some are even getting married! With such
strides taking place for the LGBTQ community, we would like
to examine how other minorities have fared over time. How has
race and class impacted characters in comics? How many comic
book characters can you name that are People of Color (POC)
and working class (besides Static Shock)? Is there a reason why
there are not any queer, working class, POC characters that are
also superheroes? Join us for this lively discussion as we examine
30 YEARS OF JAYSON
“Jayson” cartoons have entertained generations of readers by
Day in 1982, Jeff Krell created “Jayson”, which has graced the
pages of the Philadelphia Gay News, Gay Comix, Meatmen, and
a series of graphic novels, including Jayson Goes to Hollywood
PUT A LITTLE KINK IN YOUR GAY ROMANCE
Books like Fifty Shades of Grey have many romance
authors thinking about putting some BDSM elements in
their works to make them sell. That could either be a good
idea or a disaster depending on how and what you include.
Come see if you know your BDSM basics and find out how
to correctly add some kinky heat to your erotica. This panel
is also for readers who may be curious about whether what
they are reading is real BDSM. Moderated by David Holly
ANYTHING THAT LOVES: COMICS
BEYOND “GAY” AND “STRAIGHT”
While gay rights has made great strides in the last several
decades, the road for people who are bisexual, who have fluid
sexuality and/or gender, or who otherwise fall outside of “gay”
and “straight” has been much rockier. Unfortunately, if there’s
one thing that gay and straight people can often agree on, it’s
that “bisexuals don’t exist”.
Northwest Press’ new comics anthology Anything That Loves
assembles thirty creators to delve into the complex world of
non-binary sexuality and hopes to expose some myths, offer
some insights, and bring together an often-splintered LGBT
community in a new way. Moderator Charles “Zan” Christensen
and contributors to this anthology discuss the project’s origins,
why it’s important to them, and the challenges of being a bisexual
storyteller. How can they resist pressure from both straight
and gay communities to put them in categories that don’t truly
TRANSMEDIA – THE FUTURE OF ENTERTAINMENT
A passive audience is a thing of the past; entertainment brands
are now relying on a more interactive and fully immersive
experience to capture our attention. Moving beyond simple
“multi-platform” storytelling, transmedia allows users to explore
storyworlds through a variety of portals, while at the same
time encouraging them to bring to life their own characters
within these creative universes. Using a new steampunkthemed
transmedia series as an example, we will discuss both
the artistic and logistical sides of developing projects, how to
engage with your audience across a multitude of entry points,
and why it is that transmedia is truly the future of entertainment.
THE HISTORY OF M/M STORIES: SLASH
TO YAOI MANGA TO M/M ROMANCE
Male/male romantic and erotic stories in the U.S. began with
slash fan fiction (the term slash coming from “K/S” – for the
Kirk/Spock pairing from the original Star Trek TV series). Then
yaoi manga translated from Japan by publishers like Digital
Manga Inc. found an audience among American anime and
manga fans. More recently, m/m romance fiction has become a
popular niche within the romance genre. Come hear about m/m
story writing from its beginning days to the present from Jan
Suzukawa, a freelance yaoi editor and translation rewriter for
Digital Manga Inc., Tokyopop and other publishers and m/m
romance author published by Dreamspinner Press. With panelist
the evolution of both fandoms. Moderated by Kyell Gold, with
easier said than done. But what about inspiring by example?
Express and share those experiences in community — professionals
digital formats, we’ll discuss how comic art can be brought into other
THE MUTANT WHISPERER
For 50 years, the X-Men comics have been used as a parallel for
persecution and discrimination of minorities. As the gay comic
fan base grows and gay rights in general have taken center stage
on a global level, it’s becoming more and more common to see the
struggle for mutant acceptance in the comics to mirror that of gays
in the real world. So what happens when the writer of the stories
doesn’t have any experience in that? Does being straight exclude
him or her from writing a compelling story about gay equality?
With panelists Johnny M and David Walters. (Room: Eternia)
GAMING SCHEDULE
Have no fear, Gamesmaster Indigo and friends will be your
guide to the realms of fun and adventure. He will be giving easy
to understand tutorials for each and everyone one of the games
played.
In the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering, you are a
planeswalker—a powerful wizard who fights other planeswalkers
for glory, knowledge, and conquest. Your deck of cards
represents all the weapons in your arsenal. It contains the spells
you know and the creatures you can summon to fight for you.
Pathfinder is a revamped version of Dungeons & Dragons (v3.5).
You/your fantasy character embark upon imaginary adventures
within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master serves as the
game’s guide, referee and storyteller, while also maintaining the
setting in which the adventures occur and playing the role of
the inhabitants. The characters form a party that interacts with
the setting’s inhabitants (and each other). Together they solve
dilemmas, engage in battles and gather treasure, knowledge,
and notoriety.
In addition, all throughout the day, our beloved Heidi from
Steve Jackson Games will be returning to demonstrate great
games from their catalog such as Munchkin and Dino Hunt
Dice, as well as many other fantastic games.
