ece351 course outline, summer 2013 4 6 Classroom Style The projector will be used to display the text book, the course notes, the lab manual, and the code. These are our four original sources of information. There will be slides only on the first day of class. After the first day we will look at the original materials. The board will be used to primarily to work through problems. All problems will be taken from a text book or the course notes, so you will not have to write them down yourself. 7 Topics & Lectures • finite automata (2 lectures) – Regex ↦→ NFA – NFA ↦→ DFA – DFA minimization • grammars (4 lectures) – ambiguity detection by rightmost and leftmost derivations – refactoring: * resolve ambiguity * left factoring: remove left recursion * stratification * ebnf ↦→ bnf – ll(1) compliance: first, follow, and predict sets • parsing ll(1) grammars by recursive-descent (1 lecture) • term rewriting (basic definitions) • computational complexity (1 lecture) • dataflow analysis & optimization (2 lectures) – dataflow analysis: available expressions & reaching definitions – optimization: common subexpression elimination & loop invariant code motion • runtime: garbage collection & object allocation (1 lecture) • design patterns used in labs (3 lectures): visitor, interpreter, template method, composite, iterator, singleton • advanced programming techniques (2 lectures): immutability, representation invariants, higher-order functions (maybe) • code generation (3 lectures) – three address code – register allocation – instruction selection – instruction scheduling + pipelining Speak up if you do not understand what is being discussed in class. Chances are what you do not understand is some background material that you weren’t actually taught in your previous courses. The rough scheduling guideline is that Mondays are used to discuss theory and Fridays are used to discuss labs. At the beginning of the term some Mondays will also be used to discuss labs. Towards the end of the term some Fridays will be used to discuss theory. The exam will not cover any material that we have not discussed in class. Depth of coverage will be proportional to lecture time. The best way to know what will be on the exam is to come to class. Where we cover material that is covered on past exams the questions on our exam will be like the questions on the past exams. As you will notice, every offering covers slightly different material. There are some questions on past exams on material that we will not cover. We might cover material that was not tested on past exams.
