what it is like to live with MS? The peer support<br />

program <strong>of</strong>fers opportunity for one-on-one support<br />

from volunteers who are people living with MS. Support<br />

MEDITATION<br />

Cost: $40 for MS <strong>Society</strong> members<br />

Guided meditation is the practice <strong>of</strong> focusing your mind<br />

on a sound, object, visualization, breath or movement.<br />

Meditation allows you to reduce stress, relax, and be in<br />

the present moment. It rejuvenates physically, mentally<br />

and spiritually.<br />

MASSAGE THERAPY<br />

Tuesdays, January 2014 | 1:00, 2:00, or 3:00 PM<br />

MS <strong>Society</strong> Program Room, 1465 Buffalo Place<br />

Massage Therapy is <strong>of</strong>fered at the MS <strong>Society</strong> by students<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Wellington College <strong>of</strong> Remedial Massage<br />

Therapies Inc.<br />

Massage Therapy will begin at the end <strong>of</strong> January 2014.<br />

Sessions range from 5 to 6 weeks in length. Please call to<br />

put your name on the waiting list; this is necessary even<br />

if you have participated in past years.<br />

YOGA<br />

Yoga promotes balance, increases range <strong>of</strong> motion, and<br />

reduces fatigue. The meditation component encourages<br />

relaxation and helps to reduce stress.<br />

If you have considered yoga, but are uncertain as to whether<br />

or not this is a practice you would enjoy, consider dropping<br />

in for a class or two.<br />

STEPPIN’ OUT GROUP<br />

A group consisting primarily <strong>of</strong> ambulatory members <strong>of</strong><br />

the MS <strong>Society</strong> who can attend a social outing independently,<br />

the Steppin’ Out Group’s outings are planned by<br />

the group according to group interest at a yearly planning<br />

session. Participants must provide their own transportation<br />

to these outings.<br />

SOCIAL GROUPS<br />

The <strong>Winnipeg</strong> area currently has three social groups<br />

that meet regularly. Participants plan outings to a wide<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> locations throughout the city. The cost for each<br />

outing varies, but every effort is made to keep prices reasonable.<br />

Transportation is provided to each outing.<br />

SOCIAL CLUB<br />

Do you enjoy socializing and playing board games? If so,<br />

consider joining the Thursday morning Social Club. This<br />

group meets two Thursdays each month from 10:00 AM<br />

– 12:00 PM in the MS <strong>Society</strong>’s program room at 1465<br />

Buffalo Place.<br />

RECREATION IN THE COMMUNITY<br />

NEUROFIT/STROKE PROGRAM<br />

Wellness Institute, Seven Oaks Hospital | 1075 Leila Ave.<br />

Stroke and neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis,<br />

Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease can affect<br />

your quality <strong>of</strong> life, particularly your ability to stay active.<br />

Neur<strong>of</strong>it is an exercise program that will focus on increasing<br />

strength, endurance and flexibility – all <strong>of</strong> which are important<br />

to maintaining your independence with activities <strong>of</strong><br />

daily living and enjoying life to the fullest. Special consideration<br />

will be given to factors that may impact your ability to<br />

exercise: fatigue, heat sensitivity, loss <strong>of</strong> balance, and spasticity.<br />

Participants must be able to walk with or without a<br />

walking aid or be accompanied by an attendant.<br />

MS ACTION PROGRAM<br />

Designed to help people living with MS improve their overall<br />

health and fitness, this program will help strengthen your<br />

muscles and increase flexibility to help manage symptoms.<br />

MS AQUATICS - CITY OF WINNIPEG<br />

Bonivital Pool & Cindy Klassen Recreational Centre<br />

The City <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong> Community Development, Recreation<br />

and Support Services Department <strong>of</strong>fers adapted aquatic<br />

programs specifically designed for individuals with multiple<br />

sclerosis. These program runs out <strong>of</strong> Bonivital Pool and the<br />

Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex.<br />

TAI CHI HEALTH RECOVERY CLASS<br />

Taoist Tai Chi <strong>Society</strong> | 401 Henderson Highway<br />

Cost: a one-time fee <strong>of</strong> $20.00 to become a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Taoist Tai Chi <strong>Society</strong>, and then a monthly fee <strong>of</strong> $38.00.<br />

This class is open to individuals who are both ambulatory<br />

and/or utilizing a mobility aid. Tai Chi movements are gentle<br />

and balanced, making it a perfect exercise for anyone,<br />

regardless <strong>of</strong> age and/or physical condition. Warmer hands,<br />

stronger legs, and greater endurance are just a few <strong>of</strong> the<br />

rewards achieved from faithful practice.<br />

GENTLE YOGA/CHAIR YOGA<br />

This class is suitable for those who are recovering from an<br />

illness, surgery, or have a physical limitation. It is also suitable<br />

for those who wish to take a yoga class at a gentler<br />

pace. All exercises can be done from a chair.<br />

CHAIR ZUMBA<br />

This class is suitable for individuals who would have difficulty<br />

standing and exercising due to fatigue, balance<br />

problems or the need to use a mobility aid. All participants<br />

will remain seated for the duration <strong>of</strong> the class. A<br />

wonderful workout for your upper body and core body<br />

muscles!<br />
