ead<strong>in</strong>g even ifit does not conta<strong>in</strong> any overt nom<strong>in</strong>al material. This position is filled by a<br />

nul1 pro (cf footnote 46, p.98)." We will look at conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g NPs which <strong>in</strong>clude only an<br />

A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g clause occumng with both a TA <strong>and</strong> a TI verb.<br />

In (98), there is no overt nom<strong>in</strong>al material <strong>in</strong> the conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g NP. The subject pro<br />

of the subord<strong>in</strong>ate verb é-ndhtthkwasiyif 'she became sleepy' is CO-<strong>in</strong>dexed with a null pro<br />

posited <strong>in</strong> the head position of the NP. The <strong>in</strong>dex of the head percolates to the conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

NP. which <strong>in</strong> tuni, is CO-<strong>in</strong>dexed with the object pro of the matrix verb kiskêyimêw 'he<br />

bows her. '<br />

'He knows (her), (the one) that she becarne sleepy.'<br />

The above example illustrates the l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g relationship found between a TA verb<br />

<strong>and</strong> an A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g clause. A sentence with a TI matrix verb works <strong>in</strong> the same manner.<br />

When a TI verb occurs with an A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g clause, there is otten no overt nom<strong>in</strong>al<br />

material <strong>in</strong>side the conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g NP. The head position is filled by a null pro which<br />

establishes the <strong>in</strong>dex for the conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g NP. The NP then l<strong>in</strong>ks to the <strong>in</strong>animate<br />

pronom<strong>in</strong>al argument <strong>in</strong> the matnx verb. The pro <strong>in</strong> the conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g NP does not l<strong>in</strong>k to<br />

any of the pronom<strong>in</strong>al arguments with<strong>in</strong> the A-doubl<strong>in</strong>g clause. The pro <strong>in</strong> the conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

This pro is not an argument, but a non-overt nom<strong>in</strong>al.<br />
