Respect Wildlife
When Watching
The goal of a wildlife watcher
is to watch wildlife without
bothering their normal activities.
Responsible wildlife watchers
conscientiously observe viewing
manners to minimize disturbance
to animals and ensure that wildlife
is unharmed. Wildlife viewing
ethics are based on respect and
consideration. Remember, the
wellbeing of the wildlife is always
the highest priority.
View wild animals from an
appropriate distance
Keep in mind that if you get too
close and the animal is disturbed,
so is your viewing experience.
If you are getting too close, the
animal’s behavior may tell you so.
Has it stopped feeding? Is it acting
nervous? Does it get up to leave? If
the answer is yes, you are too close.
Use binoculars or spotting scopes.
Avoid surprising wildlife
Don’t try to sneak up on an animal.
Startled wildlife is stressed and
could be dangerous. You might
be treated as a predator by the
animal and you won’t get a natural
viewing experience. Move quietly,
slowly and in plain site.
Limit your stay
Most encounters with people
will stress wildlife even if no
outward sign is noticed. Make
your observation short and let
the animal get back to its
normal routine.
Stay away from nests,
dens, and other sites
obviously vulnerable
to human disturbance
Often wildlife will
abandon nests or dens
if they are repeatedly
disturbed. When the
parents are gone,
the young are not
safe and the parents’
movement back and
forth to the site might
alert predators to the
location.
Don’t litter
Besides the ugliness
of litter, animals may
The small
binocular
logo you
see next
to some
of the listed activities
in this program points
out those activities
that highlight wildlife
viewing recreation.
This symbol is
international in its
usage on wildlife
viewing related
opportunities.
eat the garbage. Litter
can also physically
harm wildlife
(entanglements,
choking, etc.).
Don’t bring pets
Pets will startle, chase,
and even kill wildlife.
Pets will decrease your
chances of seeing
wildlife, and you may
be putting your pet at
risk by exposing them
to wild animals.
When you are watching
wildlife, consider the
cumulative impact
of all encounters,
past and future.
There is a need for
learning and teaching
responsible wildlife
viewing to assure
future generations will
have the same wildlife
viewing opportunities.
September 5 / Saturday / 10:00 am – Noon
Come be a part of history! Arizona has been
Habitat as we make painted gourd birds.
These ornaments will help depict our theme,
“Arizona’s Gift, from the Grand Canyon State.”
Since 1970 it has become an honor for one
of our nation’s national forests to be asked to
provide the Capitol Tree. Over 5000 handmade
ornaments are needed. Not only will we
send your creation on to Washington for the
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
• Be prepared! Remember food, water, and
clothes to protect you from the cold, heat
and rain.
• Use maps to plan where you’re going. Check
them along the way so you’ll stay on course
and won’t get lost.
• Remember to leash your pet and bring plastic
bags to pick up your pet’s waste.
• Learn about the areas you plan to visit. Read
books, check online and talk to people before
you go. The more you know, the more fun
you’ll have.
STICK TO TRAILS
• Walk and ride on designated trails only
to protect the fragile desert ecosystem.
• Do not step on flowers or small trees.
Once damaged, they may not grow back.
• Respect private property by staying on
designated trails.
with others! This training course
is the first training course needed
before advancing on to specific
areas such as education, tour
guide, collections, exhibits,
library, store, etc and will provide
you with an introduction to the
Hohokam people, archaeology
and cultural interpretation.
Advance registration is required.
Location: Pueblo Grande Museum
Course fee: free with paid one
• Use bathrooms or outhouses
• Use a plastic bag to pack out your
pet’s poop to a garbage can.
• Keep water clean. Do not put
soap, food, human or pet waste in
• Leave plants, rocks and historical
items as you find them so others
can enjoy them.
• Treat living and dead plants with
respect. Carving, hacking or
peeling plants may kill them.
KEEP WILDLIFE WILD
• Observe wildlife from a distance
and never approach, feed or
follow them.
• Human food is unhealthy for all
wildlife and feeding them starts
bad habits.
• Protect wildlife and your food
by securely storing your meals
and trash.
SHARE OUR TRAILS AND
MANAGE YOUR PET
• Be considerate when passing
others on the trail.
• Keep your pet on a leash
to protect it, other visitors
and wildlife.
• Listen to nature. Avoid making
loud noises or yelling. You will see
more wildlife if you are quiet.
• Be sure the fun you have outdoors
does not bother anyone else.
Sonoran
Preserve
Update
In 1998, The City of Phoenix
Parks and Recreation Board
endorsed the Sonoran Preserve
Master Plan. This plan set forth
the blueprint for preserving the
landscape and protecting the
plants and animals that inhabit the
Sonoran Preserve. In 1999, 80%
of voters approved the Phoenix
Parks and Preserve Initiative
(3PI). This 10-year dedicated
sales tax allocates 60 percent of
the revenue to purchase Trust
Lands for a new desert Preserve
in northern Phoenix. In 2008,
The City of Phoenix has a number of accessible trails in the mountain
preserve system. These trails are suitable for people using wheelchairs,
walkers, crutches or other assistive devices, or for others with limited mobility.
They are also appropriate for those with children in strollers.
Papago West Park
Length: 1.2 miles
Elevation change: minimal
Difficulty: easy
The trailhead is located on Papago Park Road
on the west side of Galvin Parkway just north
of Van Buren Street (entering Papago Park
Road heading east leads to the main park
entrance).
This is an asphalt surface that follows
accessible guidelines for the first .6 of a mile.
There are three benches along the way and
the first part of this trail goes near the Eliot
ramada. The second part of this trail has the
same surface but has a few slopes that exceed
5 percent.
South Mountain Preserve
Judith Tunell Accessible Trail
Length: 1 mile
Elevation change: minimal
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Bicycles and horses are prohibited.
The trailhead is located at the South Mountain
Environmental Education Center (SMEEC)
The trail consists of two 1⁄2-mile loops
made of stabilized decomposed granite. The
Interpretive Loop, or lower loop, contains
moderate grades with a maximum grade of
7.5 percent. The Challenge Loop, or upper
loop, is slightly more difficult with a maximum
grade of 8.5 percent. Wheelchairs are available
for check-out at SMEEC. In addition, the
the program was renewed for 30 years
with 83% voter approval. It authorized the
continuation of a modest sales tax for land
acquisition and development of the preserves
to include trails, trailheads and signage. The
public lands purchased were reclassified for
conservation through the Arizona Preserve
Initiative, established by the Governor and
Legislature in 1996. Voters passed Growing
Smarter in 1998 to fund the matching
grant provision of the API through 2012.
The Sonoran Preserve has grown to more than
5,200 acres, with over 6,000 acres of future
purchases being planned. The land itself is
unique, much of it located in the transition
zone to the Arizona Upland subdivision of the
Sonoran Desert. Park staff and Park Rangers
are implementing the plan, identifying and
acquiring open space, designing trailheads and
multi-use trails and protecting the resource.
Park Rangers are actively patrolling the
information found on the trail’s
interpretive signs is available in
alternate formats, including Braille
and CD. The wheelchairs, booklets,
CD’s, and portable CD players can
be checked out for use on the trail
during hours the center is open.
