Head Coach Marty Kavanagh
Marty Kavanagh continues to elevate the level of the Stockton baseball program as
he enters his ninth season as the head coach of the Ospreys. With his aggressive
strategizing and enthusiasm for the sport, Kavanagh has transformed once-lowly
Stockton into a team to be reckoned with. In the last six years, he has led the Ospreys
to three ECAC championships, the program’s only three NJAC playoff berths,
and four 20-win seasons. Not satisfied by the consistent improvement, Kavanagh
continually strives to bring Stockton to greater heights.
Last year, the Ospreys finished 22-19 and won their third ECAC crown with a stirring
rally from a 10-1 deficit to defeat FDU-Florham 12-11 in the title game. The
comeback, which was a shining example of the positive attitude that Kavanagh brings to the team, capped
a seven-win improvement over the 2009 season. In 2008, Kavanagh led Stockton to its second consecutive
NJAC tournament appearance and second straight ECAC Metro tourney berth before setting a school record
for victories by finishing 23-17. Kavanagh reached a personal milestone with his 100th win at Stockton when
his troops routed Neumann 14-1 on April 22, 2008.
The previous Stockton mark of 22 wins and the program’s first NJAC playoff berth both took place in 2007
as Kavanagh steered the Ospreys to a 22-14-1 overall record, including 9-8-1 in league games. Stockton
also won its ECAC first round game and was declared the ECAC Metro co-champion after the tournament
final was rained out. Kavanagh coached the Ospreys to an 18-19 overall record in 2006, narrowly missing a
second consecutive .500-or-better slate.
The 2005 season was a landmark campaign for Stockton baseball as Kavanagh led the Ospreys to a 20-16
mark that ended a streak of 10 consecutive losing seasons. Stockton earned its first ECAC playoff berth and
promptly won the ECAC Metro championship while also setting a school record for wins. Kavanagh set the
stage for Stockton’s 2005 success in 2004 when his team established a new plateau for wins with a 16-19-1
mark that signaled a 12-win improvement from his first season at Stockton. In 2003, Kavanagh inherited a
program in dire need of a dramatic overhaul and began the rebuilding process by bringing his enthusiastic
and knowledgeable approach to Stockton baseball.
Prior to his arrival at Stockton, Kavanagh completed a five-year stint as the head coach at Cumberland County
College. He resurrected the baseball program at Cumberland CC, which had been dormant for 16 years,
and led the Dukes to a 126-60 record during his tenure. Kavanagh helped seven players become NJCAA
All-Americans and 15 of his Cumberland players were offered NCAA Division I scholarships.
Assistant Coaches
Tom Webber
Tom Webber is entering his sixth season as the pitching coach for the Stockton
baseball team. Webber joined the Stockton staff in 2006 as a veteran coach with
many years of baseball experience at the high school level. Under his direction,
Stockton has finished fourth or higher in the NJAC in ERA four times in five years,
including second in the league last season.
Webber was the head coach at Brick Township High School for four years from
2002-05. He was named the Ocean County Coach of the Year by the Newark
Star-Ledger in 2004 after leading Brick to a county championship and two victories
in the NJSIAA tournament.
Chris Crescenzi
Stockton alumnus Chris Crescenzi is back for his fourth season on the Osprey
baseball coaching staff. Crescenzi was one of the best and most decorated players
in school history. He finished his college career as Stockton’s all-time leader in
doubles, a record that he still holds, and RBI. Crescenzi was a three-time NJAC
All-Conference, two-time ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region and two-time NJCBA All-State
selection in three seasons with the Ospreys.
Crescenzi graduated from Stockton in December 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in
criminal justice. He also has three years of experience as a minor league baseball
player. He played for the Sussex Skyhawks and Atlantic City Surf in 2007, Evansville
Otters in 2008 and Southern Illinois Miners in 2009.
2011 Stockton Baseball Preview
The 2011 Stockton baseball team will be both young and experienced, but the added factor that
could propel the Ospreys to a successful season will be depth. Head coach Marty Kavanagh is
optimistic about Stockton’s chances for a strong finish in the NJAC for the upcoming year. Seventeen
lettermen return to the field this season, and the team’s experience at many positions gives
Kavanagh good reason for the optimism.
Junior first baseman Mike Wasco will anchor the infield with his team-leading eight home runs plus
37 RBI in 2010. Wasco also led the NJAC in walks (34) and batting average with two outs (.452)
last season. Joining Wasco will be one of only two seniors on the roster in second baseman Jason
Gordon who hit .311 a year ago. Juniors Mark Asta and Chris Wedding, two more players who
batted over .300 last spring, will share time at the hot corner.
Junior transfer Mike Ficarro is slated to replace NJAC Second Teamer Matt Allen at shortstop,
and sophomore Shawn Kessler may see some time there as well. Sophomore Chris Sanchez is a
returning letter winner who joins with freshmen Alex Bennett, Travis Marra and Mike McGee to give
Stockton depth in the infield.
2010 NJAC Rookie of the Year Barry Larro will return in the outfield, with Dan McGuckin manning
the other corner spot. Larro started 39 games, hit .297 and was named NJAC Rookie of the Week
on two occasions in 2010. The Ospreys will rely on speedy freshman Mike Bush to take over for
graduate Chris Discher in centerfield. Sophomores Joe Farrell and Gerard Heininger add depth and
matchup options for Stockton.
Junior catcher Nick Scalise is coming off an outstanding year behind the dish as he hit .357, and
his defense gives the pitching staff confidence. Scalise threw out 19 of 53 runners trying to steal last
season for a 35.8% success rate. Freshman Matt Cann will give Scalise a breather on occasion after
Scalise started 38 of 42 games last year. Freshman Brendan Jacobi also will be a newcomer behind
the plate.
Pitching, as always, will be the key to the Ospreys’ success this season, and they have a lot to
build upon from the 2010 campaign. Stockton finished third or higher in the league in runs, hits
and walks allowed per game. The Ospreys were second in the NJAC as a staff with a superb 4.09
ERA, and opposing teams hit just .286 for the year. They will have junior lefty Bryan Frank (3-3,
3.32 ERA) and sophomore righty Gage Mick (1-0, 3.34, one save) at the top of the rotation. Junior
Zach Brebner and sophomore Sean Salsano return to help on the mound, and Kavanagh feels that
Salsano will be the most improved hurler from last season.
Freshman southpaw Adam Warburton and sophomore right-hander Drew Holt give the Ospreys
more pitching depth, setting the stage for NJCBA Fireman of the Year John Lightbody to close
games. Lightbody, a senior, posted a 4-2 record with three saves, 23 strikeouts and a 3.51 ERA in
17 relief appearances last year. He’ll have some bullpen help in part-time hurler Dan McGuckin,
freshmen Brandon Trainor and Sean Peterson, and sophomore Bill Barron, giving Stockton 11
healthy arms to open the season.
2010 Season Recap
The Stockton baseball team went through some peaks and valleys during the 2010 season but finished on a
high note, winning the season-ending ECAC Metro tournament for the third time in six years. With 20 of the
26 players on the roster either freshmen or sophomores, the Ospreys achieved a measure of success in 2010
and also showed that they will be a dangerous team in the NJAC in the coming years.
Led by seniors Matt Allen and Chris Discher, Stockton finished with 22 wins. Allen set new standards with
Stockton single-season records for at-bats (157) and hits (65). In addition, Allen set career records for at-bats
(528) runs (111), hits (192) and RBI (115). His presence and leadership were invaluable to the Osprey attack.
He received postseason honors as he was named to NJAC All-Conference Second Team for the second
consecutive season. Discher finished close behind his teammate in at-bats (151), runs (34) while also hitting
.325. His leadoff ability set the table for many Osprey uprisings.
Freshman Barry Larro was named NJAC Rookie of the Year for his outstanding freshman campaign. He batted
.297 with 22 RBI and eight doubles. Larro was named NJAC Rookie of the Week twice during the season, in
which he also batted .338 with 10 runs and nine RBI in NJAC play. The rookie outfielder was chosen Most
Outstanding Player of the ECAC tournament as well. Stockton also received strong offensive contributions
from Nick Scalise (.357, 27 R, 23 RBI), Chris Wedding (.356, 32 R 16 RBI) and Mike Wasco (.329, 41 R, 37
RBI, 8 HR).
On the mound, Stockton was led by sophomore Chris LaVoie who topped the NJAC with a sterling 2.28 ERA
plus a 4-0 record. He was joined by junior workhorse Chris Cirlincione who started 10 games and finished
eighth in the NJAC with a 3.12 ERA. Junior closer John Lightbody appeared in 17 games out of the bullpen
and saved three games while picking up four wins.
Stockton began the season slowly, posting winning streaks of four and three games in the first half but never
reaching its peak until the late in the regular season when the Ospreys ripped off a second four-game winning
streak and qualified for the NJAC playoffs. Consecutive losses to nationally-ranked Kean and arch rival
Rowan ended Stockton’s stint in the conference playoffs but Marty Kavanagh’s charges gathered themselves
and finished on a high note.
In the ECAC tournament, Stockton topped Staten Island 5-1, rallied for a 7-6 win over Rutgers-Camden after
erasing a four-run deficit, and then did that game one better. In the ECAC championship game against FDU-
Florham, the Ospreys were down by nine runs and came back to win it in 10 innings, 12-11 as Allen singled
home Discher with the game-winner in the top of the 10th frame. The triumph gave Stockton its third ECAC
tournament crown, with the others coming in 2005 and 2007.
