Worried locals fear car testers
“We are worried about the safety of our children”, say some mothers in
Arjeplog. They are concerned that some car testers seem to be testing in
the town.
Other people are concerned that some car testers have been seen driving
snow-mobiles on the roads in town.
A few of the mothers of small children
in Arjeplog spoke to us and said that they
are concerned and worried about the
way certain car testers drive in the middle
of town. They drive as if they are testing.
They brake and they skid and they keep
looking at the computer instead of the
road.
Maybe they are safe drivers but with
small children playing in or near the
roads it feels dangerous and unpleasant,
say the mothers.
We know that some companies have
told their staff not to test in town or
where the locals are. We also know that
there are some locals who drive like maniacs.
Driving snow-mobiles in town
Regarding the driving of snow mobiles
in and around town, that is another
matter. Most locals would love to be
able to drive their beloved machines
everywhere. The problem is that the
people who make the rules do not seem
to agree.
It is illegal to drive a snow-mobile on
any road. You are only allowed to cross
a road. In fact it is forbidden to drive a
snow mobile in and around the town of
Arjeplog. There are marked trails specially
prepared for snow-mobiles.
So when a local sees a car tester driving
around in the streets there is both a
sense of jealousy as well as fear that
more restrictions will follow.
The truth is that the laws regulating
snow-mobiling are not considered important
and therefore not followed by
all the locals.
This little girl playing on the side of the road
should not have to fear car testers on the road.
The restrictions are seen as restrictions
of the feeling of freedom that the
snow-mobile gives.
Sometimes snow-mobiles have to cross the roads.

But we have heard of
exceptions where testers
have made such a mess that
the owners are sorry they
rented out their house.

testers in Arjeplog at any
given time during peak periods
is about a third of the
population of the whole municipality
or kommun (3,500
people).
✯ that students at the school
have invited the BOSCH testers
to spend the day with
them on Sunday. Fishing
and other activities are
planned for this International
Day.

Occupation: Receptionist at Kraja
Favourite food: All kinds of food.
It all depends on my mood what I
like to eat. I like to experiment with
food.
Lena Westerlund is a receptionists at Kraja
Dream Car: As long as a car starts
and goes, it is a dream car for me.
Of course, all new cars are nice to
drive. A 4-wheel drive is good when
you need to pull things.
Present Car: I drive a rusty, old Volvo.
It starts and I am thankful for that.
What do you do in your spare time?
There are so many things I like to do in
my spare time, there are not enough
hours in the day. I spend time with my
boys, train the dogs and go hunting. I
enjoy painting, all forms of art, really.
I also write short stories and hope to
write a book one day.
What is good about Arjeplog?
It is small and cosy, romantic and
picturesque. People are friendly, they
greet you even if they do not know
you.
I moved to Arjeplog about 2 years ago
and I really like it here: Nature and the
feeling of security, especially when you
have children.
What is bad about Arjeplog?
Nothing I can think of, perhaps that it
is far from Jutis (a village 40 km from
central Arjeplog along the Silver Road)
where we have our holiday cottage and
spend most weekends.
Music you listen to?
Depends on my mood - classical, rock,
disco, western.
What is important in life?
Self-fulfilment.
To accept that people are different, and
if you can accept that, then you can relax
and enjoy relationships with other people.
Not to take things so seriously, it could
always be worse.

Åsa Lindberg, the co-ordinator for
work-placement of the BilSystem Teknik
school programme, would like to
thank Andreas and Falk from KNORR-
BREMSE for the lecture and study visit
with the BST-students; and Kurt
Stanger who organized it all.
She says that many companies, Swedish
and international, take in these students
as trainees so that they can get
practical experience, which is of vital
importance for the success of this programme.
The students are very satisfied
and think it is all so interesting.

of car spies recently.
Now there are also people
trying to get locals to register
cars passing by their houses.
They want them to write
down how many cars pass,
what make of car and the
direction they drive.
The purpose of this is unknown.

The Hot Seat

One rumour is that these
are Finnish people trying to
make Arjeplog feel like an
unsafe place to winter test
vehicles. In this way they hope
to get companies to move to
Finland for testing.
Some people have been offered
money to have a camera
installed in a window facing
certain roads.
The majority of locals are
very careful not to do anything
that could harm winter
testing in this area and refuse
to help these people.
Handicraft presentation at Museum
There will be a presentation
of various Saami and
Swedish handicraft techniques
on Monday and Tuesday
next week at the Silver
Museum.
You can see traditional
methods of producing handicraft
using a variety of materials
such as wood, wool,
leather, skin, roots, grass and
birch twigs.

What is bad in Arjeplog?
There is not much of a
programme in the evenings.
There are not really any
good bars, pubs, places to
meet locals.
Music you enjoy? Heavy
metal and dance music.
What is important in life:
To have friends you can
rely on. To have a target or
goal in life. To see many
places.
Warning for Cows!
This sign warning drivers
that there are cows on the
road can be seen between
Arjeplog and Kuorrokveik
near the Knorr-Bemse facilities.
There are some cows in
Arjeplog, on a farm 50 kms
from where this sign was
placed.
The sign was exchanged for
the original sign, a picture of
a moose, which has vanished
without a trace.?
