‘it is the first piece to shed the rhetoric which<br />

suffuses the early work. a quality <strong>of</strong> awkward<br />

serenity has entered this piece, a quality which<br />

recurs in all her best sculptures from this time<br />

onwards, even in pieces that are outwardly<br />

violent and full <strong>of</strong> menace.’ 16 the sculpture<br />
