Service Children’s <strong>Education</strong> (SCE) is a MoD Agency dedicated to the education of the<br />

children of Service personnel, MoD Personnel and sponsored organisations stationed<br />

overseas. SCE seeks to provide a first class system of schools and educational support<br />

services, and aims to provide an effective and efficient education service, from Foundation<br />

Stage through to sixth form, and to enable children to benefit from their residence abroad.<br />

Pre-School, Nurseries (Early Years) and Childminders<br />

Crèche<br />

Jumblies Crèche is located on the Seaforth Estate close to <strong>Ayios</strong> <strong>Nikolaos</strong> Primary School<br />

and caters for children aged 6-36 months. It offers various sessions for both under 2’s and<br />

over 2’s Monday - Friday. The crèche follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.<br />

They also accept Sodexo childcare vouchers; for further details on the scheme see<br />

Additionally there is a nursery in the local village of Vrysoulles, approximately 2km away from<br />

Childminders<br />

There is a shortage of registered childminders at JSSU (Cyp) <strong>Ayios</strong> <strong>Nikolaos</strong>. For details of<br />

Primary <strong>Education</strong> & Foundation Stage (Nursery & Reception)<br />

Sunbeams (Foundation Stage 1) is part of <strong>Ayios</strong> <strong>Nikolaos</strong> Primary School. Children can start<br />

FS1 at the start of the term after their third birthday. Once places are offered these are<br />

government funded for a three-hour session Monday-Friday (0730-1030).<br />

King Richard School is the secondary school for the Eastern Sovereign Base Area and is<br />

located at Dhekelia Station, approximately 15 miles from <strong>Ayios</strong> <strong>Nikolaos</strong>. Transport is<br />

Special <strong>Education</strong>al Needs<br />

Children’s <strong>Education</strong> Advisory Service (CEAS), based at Upavon, Wiltshire, provide practical<br />

advice on many educational issues including if your child has special educational needs.<br />

Parents who have children with statementing needs have to contact CEAS in Upavon prior to<br />

posting to Cyprus. This is to ascertain whether the SEN Statement can be met in Cyprus.<br />

Ofsted - How service children's education is inspected.<br />

Providers of Service children's education are treated in the same way as state schools, and<br />

inspected by Ofsted at least once every three years. A team of inspectors led by a registered<br />

inspector spends no longer than two days in the setting gathering evidence, including<br />

observing lessons and speaking to teachers and pupils, to report on well they are performing.<br />

They normally receive about two days' notice of their inspection. To view the reports for <strong>Ayios</strong><br />

In addition to the information about military courses 9CLM, JOLP and MA courses for soldiers<br />

and officers, the <strong>Education</strong> Centres in Cyprus provide a range of services to the wider<br />

community. At <strong>Ayios</strong> <strong>Nikolaos</strong> the <strong>Education</strong> Centre is also home to the Library, Interactive<br />

Learning Centre (ILC) computer suite.<br />

Interactive Learning Centre (ILC)<br />

Provides over 300 online-based courses, both academic and recreational, that can be<br />

accessed via the internet in the ILC. ILC courses are available to all Service personnel and<br />

MoD Civil Servants. Some courses are also available (offline) to locally-employed civilians<br />

and dependents, and for serving personnel many of the courses are subsidised or free.<br />

Examples of Defence Learning Portal (DLP) include; Assertiveness, ECDL, Effective Writing,<br />

Health & Safety Management and Rosetta Stone Languages. Contact the ILC Administrator<br />

Personal and Community Development Learning (PCDL) Courses<br />

A variety of PCDL Courses; guitar skills, dancing, jewellery making, beauty courses, animal<br />

care, Greek language, Japanese culture, yoga, craft courses etc. The courses start in<br />

September, January and April to mirror the school term times. A minimum of six sign-ups is<br />

required for each course and the courses on offer are dependent on instructor availability. It<br />

is also possible to run a PCDL course. Should you have a skill you would like to share with<br />

the community new courses are greatly appreciated. Please speak with the <strong>Education</strong> Centre<br />

The Open University<br />

The Open University (OU) is the United Kingdom’s only university dedicated to distance<br />

learning. Most courses require no previous qualifications to study. Whilst you need to18<br />

years old to start a course there is no upper age limit. For further information visit:<br />

Dhekelia Station, these are automatically arranged if you register your address on-line as<br />

being <strong>Ayios</strong> <strong>Nikolaos</strong> (BFPO 59), however the OU Clerk, Tonia, can be contacted Tel:<br />

(00357) 2527 6165. OU Advisers/Careers Advisers visit Cyprus for any prospective or<br />

current student, details will be well advertised when these visits take place.<br />

Vocational Training & Qualifications (VTQ)<br />

Vocational and Training Qualifications (VTQ) is part of the HQ Joint <strong>Education</strong>al & Training<br />

Services with sites located across the Island based at Episkopi, Akrotiri and Dhekelia.<br />

VTQ for Young People<br />

VTQ provides young people with the opportunity to achieve National Vocational Qualifications<br />

(NVQs) within the workplace.<br />

Young people can undertake an Apprenticeship which is an excellent way of gaining<br />

qualifications and workplace experience. Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge<br />

and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. VTQ offers two<br />

levels of Apprenticeship for those aged 16 to 24 years:<br />

• Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes)<br />

• Advanced Apprenticeship (equivalent to two A-level passes)<br />

Whilst undertaking an Apprenticeship a weekly training allowance of £40.00 sterling will be<br />

paid increasing to £60.00 on completion of qualifications within the framework.<br />

Apprenticeships are available in the following areas:<br />

• Customer Service<br />

• Children’s Care Learning & Development<br />

• Business Administration<br />

If you have less than eight months left on Island then an NVQ may be more suitable. VTQ<br />

offers NVQs in the following areas:<br />

Youth Services<br />

The BFC Youth Service contributes to the welfare of Service families by providing social and<br />

educational opportunities for young people aged 8-18 years. The Service in Cyprus is made<br />

up of Youth Centres and various projects in Akrotiri, Episkopi, Dhekelia, <strong>Ayios</strong> <strong>Nikolaos</strong> and<br />

Nicosia.<br />

The Service has a Youth and Community Officer in the HQ and a Youth and Community<br />

Worker based in each Station who offer a wide variety of activities and events that are<br />

designed specifically to meet the needs of young people in individual locations. All staff are<br />

professionally qualified and work directly with young people, children and the community as a<br />

whole.<br />
