The Open University
The Open University (OU) is the United Kingdom’s only university dedicated to distance
learning. Most courses require no previous qualifications to study. Whilst you need to18
years old to start a course there is no upper age limit. For further information visit:
www.open.ac.uk or contact to the Education Centre Manager. Most OU exams can be sat at
Dhekelia Station, these are automatically arranged if you register your address on-line as
being Ayios Nikolaos (BFPO 59), however the OU Clerk, Tonia, can be contacted Tel:
(00357) 2527 6165. OU Advisers/Careers Advisers visit Cyprus for any prospective or
current student, details will be well advertised when these visits take place.
Vocational Training & Qualifications (VTQ)
Vocational and Training Qualifications (VTQ) is part of the HQ Joint Educational & Training
Services with sites located across the Island based at Episkopi, Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
VTQ for Young People
VTQ provides young people with the opportunity to achieve National Vocational Qualifications
(NVQs) within the workplace.
Young people can undertake an Apprenticeship which is an excellent way of gaining
qualifications and workplace experience. Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge
and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time. VTQ offers two
levels of Apprenticeship for those aged 16 to 24 years:
• Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes)
• Advanced Apprenticeship (equivalent to two A-level passes)
Whilst undertaking an Apprenticeship a weekly training allowance of £40.00 sterling will be
paid increasing to £60.00 on completion of qualifications within the framework.
Apprenticeships are available in the following areas:
• Customer Service
• Children’s Care Learning & Development
• Business Administration
If you have less than eight months left on Island then an NVQ may be more suitable. VTQ
offers NVQs in the following areas:
