Sunrise Rotary Student of the Month: Makenna May
The French would call February’s Student of the Month “gracieux.” A Spaniard would
certainly call her “humilde.” But senior Makenna May’s teachers would call her even more
than gracious and humble. They would add words like “patient,” “helpful,” “wise,” and
“mature.” Thus, it should be no surprise to see Makenna chosen for the CDA Sunrise
Rotary’s award. Nominated by both her Spanish and French teachers for her diligent
work in the classroom, kindness toward others, and willingness to help those in need,
Makenna has clearly made her mark on CCA. Mrs. Barry remarked that, “Makenna is one
of the most talented students in my AP Spanish class this year…she is a natural leader
among her classmates.” Dr. LeBlanc has seen similar character traits during Makenna’s
time in her French I and French II classes, “…the class recognizes Makenna’s formidable
skills in French, but she remains ever modest.” Beyond the classroom, Makenna has proven
to be a stand-out in her general demeanor, attitude, and interactions with others. “She treats everyone around
her with dignity and respect,” said Mrs. Barry, “…[she] is a shining example of…grace, perseverance, and wisdom.”
Before you think that Makenna sounds too good to be true, it is important to note that last year she attended an
intensive ten-day summer journalism seminar at Princeton University. Though relatively new to the journalism
world, and certainly out of her comfort zone in a new city with new classmates, Makenna still found the silver lining.
Makenna wrote in a blog post for the program, “On our first night here, our directors told us that these ten days
are very much like a marathon, and the metaphor fits well. We pack so much into every day, we grow tired, and we
work into the night. But we support each other, we joke, we laugh, and we create a family.” This is how Makenna
approaches school and life, and it definitely explains why she is the February Student of the Month. Congratulations,
Makenna! All the best to you in the future!
