'preface.
rROM the first I have taken a great interest in this Book
of Poems, and looked forward to its appearance under
the happiest auspices. Now, when its piihlication is an
accomplished fact, the Avithor is
suffering from an illness
that we would fain hope may be temporary, but which,
from its very nature, totally incapacitates him from saying
a word on his own behalf.
I therefore venture to do for
him what he cannot
do for himself, namely — plead for a kindly receptior. from
the public for the work upon which he has expended so
much time and thought.
