22nd European Athletics Junior
Championships
Rieti, Raul Guidobaldi Stadium
European Athletics President’s Welcome Message
We are delighted to be back in Italy for the 22nd edition of the
European Athletics Junior Championships. The city of Rieti will
follow on from Grosseto which hosted a memorable championships
back in 2001.
Rieti is a town steeped in the sport and is an excellent choice for
Europe’s new generation of emerging stars to showcase their
talent. Stadio Raul Guidobaldi stages one of the world’s top
athletics meetings every year in early September, and has also
built a tradition of having a track, re-laid last summer, that produces fine performances. It
is sure to witness many more during the four days of this year’s Championships.
The European Athletics Junior Championships is extremely important for the development
of athletics in Europe. Throughout each of the previous 21 editions we have had the
cream of European junior athletic talent battling for supremacy in their age group and
this year is sure to be no different. Many have moved on from these championships to
glittering success at the European Athletics Championships, World Championships and
Olympic Games at senior level.
If you look back at the list of gold medallists in Grosetto 12 years ago, you will come
across names such as Yelena Isinbayeva, Mo Farah, Carolina Klüft, Krisztian Pars. These
names need no introduction today. There were also plenty of latter day stars who did not
hear their national anthem played in Grosseto – Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen and Russia’s
Anna Chicherova both finished with a silver, while Croatia’s Blanka Vlasic and Betty
Heidler of Germany, who both went on to become world champions before the end of
the decade, had modest sixth and ninth places in the high jump and hammer respectively.
This just underlines how important a role these championships have played in shaping
the career of some of the stars of the sports.
Rieti has excellent facilities for the athletes and I have no doubt that there will be a great
atmosphere at the stadium in July.
European Athletics greatly appreciates the efforts of the Italian athletics federation
(FIDAL), the City of Rieti and the local organising committee in the preparation for the
Championships.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Rieti in July for four days of exciting athletics
competition.
4. THE RAUL GUIDOBALDI STADIUM
The Raul Guidobaldi stadium is located in the center of the city of Rieti and it is
surrounded almost entirely by the river Velino.
The “Camposcuola” was inaugurated on 23 July 1960 with a solemn ceremony.
Immediately after the Italian team with its captain Livio Berruti moved in Rieti in
order to prepare for the Olympics games of Rome.
The famous track of the stadium was initially in “Tennisolite” then in Rubcor “and
finally in “Sportflex”.
The “school track” became a proper Stadium after 1996. It was named after
Professor Raul Guidobaldi, the president of CONI Rieti for 12 years.
Raul Guidobaldi was an extremely dedicated person who with his commitment
and expertise, contributed actively to the realization of important structures related
to sport. He has been the protagonist of an historic transition that has laid
the foundation for the great development of sport in Rieti.
In 2002, the stadium was entirely renewed, the mantle was replaced and a
monumental grandstand was built. Just after the conclusion of these works, the
city of Rieti hosted, for the first time in 2003, the Italian Senior Championships.
2012 was the year of the great renovation, a lot of changes were made in
order to be ready to host the EuroJunior. The brand new MONDO track is been
until now a guarantee of success.
The stadium has also a fully equipped indoor track (6 lanes 80 metres long – 2
high jump areas 1 pole vault area – 1 long jump area) and a fully equipped
outdoor L-shaped training track located behind the main stands. The training
track has been lengthened and relayed with a new track surface last year.
Alternative Training Track Rieti has an altitude track in Terminillo (the mountain
of Rieti) fully equipped, available for all the teams and athletes accommodated
in that area.
Since 1970 the stadium Raul Guidobaldi has been the home of the reknown
RietiMeeting, the international IAAF event directed by Sandro Giovannelli. Every
year the Iaaf meeting rewards the city with top permformances and records. 8
are the world records made on the Guidobaldi’s track, the latest in chronological
order : Asafa Powell (9.74 – 100m , 2007) and David Rudisha (1:41:01 - 800,
2010).
Athletics in Rieti is most of all youth athletics. For 38 years the local club Atletica
Studentesca Cariri worked within the schoolworld organizing stages and activities
for youth of all ages and disciplines.
11. OMEGA provides world-class timekeeping for Europe’s best young athletes
OMEGA looks forward to bringing its unparalleled sports timekeeping expertise
to Rieti for the European Athletics Junior Championships.
OMEGA has been involved in athletics timekeeping for more than 80 years.
In 1932, its pocket watch chronographs were already considered the most
reliable instruments available for measuring world-class performance at sporting
events and OMEGA’s reputation was such that the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) asked the firm to supply all sports timing devices for use at the
Olympic Games to be held that year in Los Angeles.
The company was happy to oblige, and delivered 30 OMEGA chronographs,
accompanied by an expert watchmaker, to ensure precise timekeeping and
reliable results from all the competitions. OMEGA has continued to develop and
deliver state-of-the-art sports timing and measurement systems ever since, and
at the London 2012 Olympic Games, it assumed the Official Timekeeper role
for the 25th time. Preparations are well underway for the Sochi 2014 Olympic
Winter Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Every year, OMEGA’s experts deploy teams of timekeeping professionals to
sporting events around the world, armed with a veritable arsenal of advanced
sports timekeeping and measurement equipment. Their innovative systems
include starting blocks and false-start detection systems and
the latest photo-finish cameras for the sprints and middle-distance events, as
well as height and distance measurement devices for field disciplines.
OMEGA records and displays the results with the world’s best equipment
OMEGA’s official timekeepers ensure timely delivery of the official results to everyone
involvedin the competitions they support. At the events it serves, OMEGA
is also responsible for the competitor displays for the athletes and their support
teams along with the public displays to spectators at each venue. The official
results are also delivered in real time to broadcast, network
and print media who in turn relay results and commentary to remote audiences
around the world.
Though each event requires a specific configuration of precisely tuned devices
and systems, perhaps the most famous of OMEGA’s timekeeping inventions is
the photo-finish camera. First developed for use at the London 1948 Olympic
Games, these cameras solved the problem of grouped finishes by enabling
judges to separate the winners from the runners-up. The OMEGA
Scan’O’Vision cameras have evolved continuously over the years and the
current version, the Scan’O’Vision Star, provides more than 2000 high-definition
images of the participants as they cross the finish line.
OMEGA and athletics
While the number and variety of events make the Olympic Games the most
famous, complex and challenging of world championships, OMEGA’s track
and field timekeeping experts are busy every year at competitions around the
world.
Along with the European Athletics U23 Championshipin Tampere and the European
Athletics Junior Championships in Rieti, OMEGA has continued its relationship
with the IAAF Diamond League, serving as Official Timekeeper at its meets
in the 2013 season.
OMEGA wishes the talented young athletes participating in the European
Athletics Junior Championships an excellent event. We look forward to recording
their record-setting performances!
