Tom and Mr Wearne nearing the finish in Nelson, of the
Advance Camp held earlier this week.

Joy has been out of the school this week accompanying our students on the canoeing camp and
attending the Principal’s conference in Lorne for the latter part of the week. So, it’s my turn to
give you the Principal’s news.
Last week there were a few concerns that the canoeing camp for the Advance and Duke of
Edinburgh students would be derailed due to bad weather but this was not the case. Sunday saw
the Silver Duke of Ed and the Yr. 10 students head off for the Glenelg in near perfect conditions.
Lauren Smith who is attempting to achieve her Gold Duke of Ed was already on the Glenelg and
the group met up with her on Sunday. Due to the large number of Advance students this year a
changeover was organised for the Monday and the Yr. 9 students replaced the year 10’s on the
river. The logistics for this camp certainly were a challenge.
It seems that the skill level displayed by the students has significantly improved from last year. A
much quicker pace being set and nobody landing in cold water were pretty good indicators. All
the staff who attended the camp spoke positively about the students’ attitude and behaviour.
Thanks to Ms Forbes, Michele Mulraney, Haydn Wearne, Gary Bourke and Policeman Jim for
accompanying the students on the camp. Thanks, also needs to be extended to Brian O’Leary and
Kylie Smith for assisting with the transfer of students to and from the Glenelg. It seems canoeing
can really take it out of you because we’ve observed a few weary students and staff. Surprisingly,
the students seem to have bounced back a bit quicker than the adults. I’m not sure why!
We have quite a few of our students attending the Grampians secondary athletics competition in
Ballarat today. I hope the weather is friendly to them as they represent our school but it is
Ballarat. This group will be wearing their new school sports tops so they will be looking extra
good when they compete. These tops are now available to purchase from the office at a cost of
$25 per top. At school, these tops can be worn during PE and Sport classes only and will also be
worn by students when they are representing the school at sporting events. They are not an
alternative to the yellow polo top our students currently wear as a part of their school uniform.
We wish the students going to Ballarat tomorrow the best of luck and hope they know the whole
school is behind them. Thanks to Haydn Wearne for taking the group to Ballarat.
On Wednesday, representatives from Kaniva toured our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen and Garden
setup in preparation for their participation in this fantastic program. It was a great opportunity to
show off just how well the program is going in our school and the progress that has been made
in the kitchen and garden by our students under the guidance of Kerry, Bernie and Rebecca. It
was terrific to hear our volunteers speak so highly of the program and the value they see in it for
the students and themselves. Don’t forget next Wednesday the 9 th May, starting at 5.30pm, is
your opportunity to view this program in action by attending our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen
Garden launch. The students are really looking forward to showing you just what they are capable
of in the garden and the kitchen.
Enjoy your week!
Sam Crick competed at the state
swimming finals at the Melbourne
Sports and Aquatic Centre on the
29/3/12. As you would expect at
state level, the competition was
incredibly high.
Sam swam in the 50m and 100m
Breastroke coming 8 th out of 9. She
swam her personal best time in
both events and should be well
pleased with her efforts.
