For both stations, percentage data capture statistics have been generated
for both raw data captured and valid post calibration data. The data
capture statistics are intended to reflect the comparison between total raw
data capture and valid calibrated data.
The raw data capture percentage represents the total possible hourly
intervals (15 minute intervals for SO 2 ) during the month for which raw data
has been collected. This is an indication of how well the analysers have
been working during the month.
The valid post calibration data capture percentage represents the relevant
assessment periods (e.g. running 8-hour mean for O 3 ). This is all data that
is valid once the relevant calibration factors have been applied.
The Richmond Hill Monitoring Station has a high proportion of captured raw
data for March 2007, in excess of 88% in all cases. There are lower
percentages of valid data at Richmond Hill during March 2007 compared to
captured data. Some of the data loss is due to the span test undertaken on
the 5 th March.
At Richmond Hill, there is a much lower percentage of valid post calibration
data for SO 2 than captured raw data. This loss is due to negative
measurements of SO 2 after the calibration factor has been applied. It is
considered that this may be due to low levels of ambient concentrations of
SO 2 in the vicinity of Richmond Hill during March 2007.
Similarly, the percentage of valid post calibration NO 2 data is lower in
comparison to other pollutant concentrations at Richmond Hill. Again, it is
considered that this may be due to low levels of ambient NO 2
concentrations during March 2007.
At the Quarterbridge Monitoring Station, there were a series of power cuts,
commencing on the 14 th February. Enviro Technology visited the
Quarterbridge site on the 26 th February. During the visit, it was concluded
that the air conditioning unit was causing the power failures. On the 1 st
March, an engineer from Stewart Clague Services investigated the air
conditioning unit for a fault and determined that the cause of the fault was
the failure of the compressor. To reduce heat generation whilst the air
conditioning unit was not operational, it was decided to keep just the PM 10
and NO x analysers running until the air conditioning unit was replaced,
resulting in low percentages of captured raw data for all other pollutants for
March 2007. Whilst the air conditioning unit was out of action, regular
temperature checks were made to ensure the analysers were not
overheating. On the 17 th March, a replacement air conditioning unit was
fitted and the CO, O 3 and PM 2.5 were put back into service. However, the
SO 2 analyser required a permeation tube to be refitted and remained
switched off, therefore the percentage of captured raw data for SO 2 is lower
than the percentages of captured raw data for all the other pollutants. The
permeation tube was then refitted on the 26 th March 2007 and the SO 2
analyser was put back into service.
At the end of March 2007, there are two episodes of elevated PM 10
concentrations at both Richmond Hill and Quarterbridge Monitoring
Stations. It is possible that the elevated PM 10 concentrations are due to
foggy conditions at the end of March 2007.
At the Quarterbridge Monitoring Station, there were 3 exceedances of the
PM 10 24 hour mean objective and 1 exceedance of the O 3 8-hour running
mean objective during March 2007. At Richmond Hill, there were 2
exceedances of the PM 10 24 hour mean objective and 3 exceedances of
the O 3 8-hour running mean objective during March 2007.
