The Great Lake Taupö region is situated right in the 

centre of the North Island on the dramatic Central 

Plateau, a few hours drive from the main cities of the

TAUPÖ (P8) 

Centrally located on State Highway 1, Taupö is situated 

on the shores of Australasia’s largest fresh water lake. 

Taupö is the main township of the Great Lake Taupö 

region with a population of around 23,000. Well known 

as a popular holiday destination, this town really knows 

how to turn it on for visitors. With an inspiring range 

of outdoor recreational activities to choose from, any 

visitor is spoilt for choice. Home to several international 

golf courses, a choice of jet boating experiences on the 

Waikato River, hot thermal mineral pools, adrenaline 

adventure options, great charter fishing experiences, 

family fun experiences and great bush walking and

Located at the southern end of the lake, on the banks 

of the wonderful Tongariro River, Turangi and its 

surrounding countryside offers fantastic trout fishing, 

challenging hunting, hiking or leisurely bushwalks, sight 

seeing and much more. Turangi is the tourist gateway to 

the Tongariro World Heritage Park, Kaimanawa Forest 

Park, Pureroa Forest Park, the Mt Ruapehu ski fields and 

the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Turangi is your adventure 

centre. Whether you’re looking for sightseeing or 

mountain-climbing Turangi is your perfect base to explore

BY LAND – The best way to travel to and explore Great 

Lake Taupö is by car. The region is on the Thermal 

Explorer Highway, which passes through Waikato 

and Rotorua before reaching Great Lake Taupö, so 

when travelling south from Auckland why not take this 

touring route? Along the way you can visit an ancient 

underground labyrinth of limestone caves and experience 

nature’s awesome earth forces of bubbling mud, spouting 

geysers and natural geothermal mineral pools. 

Following on from Great Lake Taupö is the Volcanic Loop 

Highway, which encompasses the Tongariro National Park 

and the breathtaking volcanic mountain and ski fields of 

Mt Ruapehu. 

Alternatively, Great Lake Taupö is easily accessible by bus 

as it is on the main coach routes.

TAUPÖ MUST DO'S 

• Take a ride on the iconic Lions Train – no family 

holiday in Taupö is complete without taking the little 

ones on the train based on the Tongariro South 

Domain. Operates holidays and weekends. 

• Get out on the lake and catch a trout – you’d be crazy 

to come to Taupö and not get out on the lake. Contact 

the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre or see pages 42-44 

for details on scenic cruises to the unique Maori Rock 

Carvings and fishing options. 

• Fish and chips on the lakefront – Eat alfresco, just like 

a local. Take in the spectacular views while watching 

the sun sink behind the mountains. 

• Visit two of the best vantage points along the 

Waikato River, Lake Taupö’s only water outlet and 

the longest river in New Zealand, for some serious fastmoving 

water action. The Huka Falls are the country’s 

most visited natural attraction, and can be visited by 

car, foot, bike, jet boat, riverboat or helicopter, 

accessed off SH1. The Aratiatia Rapids are a unique 

experience - watch as the dam opens daily at 10am, 

12pm, 2pm & 4pm - summer, and 10am, 12pm and 

4pm – winter. Some must do ‘rapid action’. Situated a 

short distance off SH5. 

• Soak in a thermal hot pool – Choose from one of 

Taupö’s mineral water pool and aquatic facilities, where 

you can experience the benefits of the mineral waters; 

or stay at one of our many accommodation providers 

who have their own thermal hot pools. 

• One of the best ways to see the region is from the 

air – take a scenic flight from Taupö and get a unique 

perspective on the mountains of the Tongariro National 

Park, the Kaimanawa Ranges, and beautiful Lake Taupö. 

• Gardens galore – visit some of the beautiful public 

parks and gardens open in the district, such as the 

Botanical Gardens and the Rose Garden. For location 

information ask at the local i-SITEs. 

• Lake Taupö is the site of the world’s largest eruption 

in the last 5,000 years. The results of its earth 

shattering creation can be seen everywhere with active 

volcanoes, spectacular steaming cliffs, geysers, boiling 

lakes, bubbling mud pools and floating rocks called 

pumice. Visit the Craters of the Moon or one of the 

other significant geothermal sites in this region and 

the Volcanic Activity Centre, to learn more about our 

fascinating area. 

• Tee off in Taupö – the Taupö region is blessed with 

seven golf courses in close proximity, from a nine hole 

resort course to the world class Wairakei International 

Golf Course. Enough to keep keen golfers active for 

at least a week. 

• Enjoy the many walking and mountain biking tracks 

this region has to offer, suitable for all ages and 

fitness levels. Trail maps are available at the local 

i-SITEs.

ADVENTURE 

Fancy a bit of adrenaline rushing through your veins? 

Why not leap off a platform with nothing but a bungy 

cord attached to your ankles? Or hurl yourself out of a 

plane with your jump master at the worlds busiest skydive 

dropzone? Taupö is an adventure lover’s paradise, with 

white water rafting, kayaking, mountain biking and 

motorsport all easily accessible. For a bit of family fun try 

rafting or jet boating, where you can view the Huka Falls, 

see the Aratiatia Rapids or jet boat right up to a thermal 

reserve. 

LEISURE 

For a more relaxed holiday, try some of Taupö’s more 

leisurely activities. There are some great activity centres 

which the kids will love, or relax and unwind at one of our 

sensational day spas. Take a scenic flight, a guided tour or 

simply relax and enjoy some sumptuous wine and cuisine 

at any one of Taupö’s scenic locations. The boutique 

shopping for designer clothing, homewares and art is one 

the regions true pleasures. 

ARTS & CULTURE 

Great Lake Taupö has a proud history and heritage 

built around Tangata Whenua (People of the Land). 

The earliest traditions and legends, the stories from 

pre-European history, contemporary Maori eco-cultual 

activities, and our iconic Kapa Haka and Hangi product all 

combine to give visitors to Great Lake Taupö an authentic 

and unique cultural experience. Some fine examples 

of Maori cultural artwork and the award winning Pure 

Ora Garden are situated at the Taupö Museum and Art 

Gallery, and there are boutique galleries around the 

region showcasing locally produced art for every taste. 

CRUISING AND FISHING 

Taupö offers a number of memorable experiences on 

the water. Enjoy this region’s unspoilt environment by 

boat, picnic on a beach, visit the Maori Rock Carvings or 

simply brunch on board any number of charter options. 

The Tongariro River is Great Lake Taupö’s main spawning 

river and world famous for the size and quantity of trout 

in it. Fly-fishing guides will have you hooked up to a 

fish on your first day. The best river time is during the 

winter spawning runs – June to September. Lake fishing 

is fantastic all year round. Remember to purchase your 

fishing license before venturing out. 

Visit one of our active geothermal areas, or enjoy the 

thermal mineral waters of our local hot pools, where you 

can bathe your cares away. 

5 TOP WALKS 

1. Spa Thermal Park to Huka Falls (2hrs return) – 

Signposted track begins from the Spa Thermal Park 

carpark on County Ave (off Spa Road). 

2. Huka Falls to Aratiatia Rapids (4hrs return) – Track 

begins over the bridge at Huka Falls. Try to time your 

arrival at the rapids when the dam is due to open. 

Check times with the Taupö i-Site Visitor Centre. 

3. Great Lake Walkway (time varies) – Track begins 

anywhere on Lake Terrace and heads around the 

lake towards Turangi. Finish at Wharewaka Point, or 

continue as far as Five Mile Bay. 

4. Rangatira Point Walking Track (1.5hrs return) – The 

track begins off Acacia Bay Road, and leads around the 

lakeshore to Totara Bay. The main track continues on to 

Rangatira Point and loops back to meet the road. 

5. Whakaipo Bay to Kinloch (4.5hrs) – Track begins 

at Whakaipo Bay,head right and climb over the stile 

to begin. It is fully signposted and family friendly. Care 

should be taken as it is a shared mountain bike track. 

PEDAL POWER 

The Great Lake Taupö region has some of New 

Zealand’s best road and mountain bike tracks, some 

rate this regions mountain bike trails up there with the 

best in the world. And of course Great Lake Taupö is also 

home to some pretty iconic road cycle events, so you’re 

spoilt for choice whatever you prefer! 

Try biking the gullies and walking tracks of town or the 

pine scented exotic forests close by. Taupö offers over 

90 kms of off road tracks ranging from gentle to heart 

pumping. Many of the tracks, such as the Whakaipo to 

Kinloch (W2K) trail follow beautiful bush trails, where you 

can catch glimpses of the lake, rivers and mountains. 

For the thrill-seeker try heli-biking into the mountains or 

for the more chilled-out biker enjoy a ride through rolling 

bush tracks in the pine forest. And as a real bonus, there 

are many fantastic cafes at some of the exit and entry 

points to several mountain bike tracks, great for post ride 

replacement or as an adrenalin pump prior to setting off. 

Taupö’s biking and cycling options offer something for 

all ranges of fitness, experience and budget. This is an 

exciting adventure sport for speed, spills and thrills.

THERMAL VOLCANIC 

The Great Lake Taupö region is part of the Taupö 

Volcanic Zone, a volcanic wonderland stretching from 

White Island to Tongariro National Park. Within this 

area you’ll see spectacular steaming cliffs, geysers, boiling

A fishing mecca for over 100 years, however there’s 

far more to Turangi than fishing. White water rafting, 

kayaking, mountain biking, bushwalking, indoor and 

outdoor climbing, culturally guided walks and golf 

are all choices you have in this vibrant destination. 

When you’re at the Southern End of the lake don’t miss 

the historic village of Tokaanu, famous for its mineral 

hot pools and geothermal area. You can also kayak the 

Tokaanu stream and visit the vineyards and beaches 

around Pukawa, Kuratau and Omori. 

Forty minutes from Turangi is the Tongariro National 

Park, famous for the two ski fields; Whakapapa and Turoa 

on Mt Ruapehu, which combined make New Zealand’s 

largest ski area. This is also the location of the iconic 

one day trek, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Turangi 

sits on the edge of wilderness, and is bordered by the 

Kaimanawa Forest Park, which is famous for hunting, 

fishing and tramping. 

TURANGI MUST DO’S 

• The Tokaanu Thermal Area offers an easy stroll 

around the Tokaanu thermal walk; witness the natural 

wonders of a geothermal area for free. Remember 

to stick to the track and closely supervise children. 

The adjacent thermal hot pools are great for a relaxing 

and therapeutic soak after a day exploring the region’s 

attractions. 

• Scenic short walks are plentiful around the southern 

end of the lake. Walks along the Tongariro River, 

between Omori and Pukawa, up Maunganamu, at 

Whareroa and around Lake Rotopounamu allow you to 

enjoy beauty of this unique region without having to 

make a day of it. 

• The Tongariro Alpine Crossing traverses a spectacular 

active volcanic zone, and offers a unique and 

challenging opportunity to experience some of the 

Tongariro National Park’s special gifts. A cold mountain 

spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, 

emerald-coloured lakes and magnificent views combine 

to make this an enjoyable and memorable trek. 

• Check out the cultural sites close to Turangi, including 

the redoubt Te Porere, an ancient settlement at 

Opataka, and Rotoaira, home of the famous ‘haka’. 

• Visit one of the lookouts offering expansive and 

magnificent views across Lake Taupö and the central 

North Island. 

• Fly fish one of Turangi’s famous rivers, which are 

world famous for their excellent fishing, or go out onto 

the lake and try your luck. Specialised fishing shops and 

experienced local guides will also ensure you 

experience the best the Taupö fishery has to offer. 

• Mountain biking is well catered for in the region, from 

easy family trips along the Tongariro River walkway to 

the backcountry rides between the Pillars of Hercules

handy to Turangi, including those on Ruapehu, in the 

Mangatepopo Valley and at Whanganui Bay. Turangi

• Birdwatching – There is significant birdlife to be found 

in the Turangi area. Around the wetlands on the shores 

of Lake Taupö you can find Pukeko, Bitterns, Shags,

(native Blue Duck), Kereru, Tui, Fantail and other forest

FISHING AND CRUISING 

Turangi is world renowned for trout fishing and is located 

right on the backs of the famous Tongariro River. 

Whether you’re a well seasoned fisherman or just a healthy 

enthusiast waiting to give it a go – try your hand at trout 

fishing in Turangi. A trout fishing guide is recommended 

and the fishing shops or the local i-SITE nearby have all the 

information you need. A fishing licence is essential. 

Cost: $8 per child, which includes a 24 hour Taupö 

Fisheries licence. 

Advanced fly casting lessons are available on the day 

at 11am and 1pm. Cost $10 per child, $15 per adult, 

recommended for children 8 years and over and adults.

Around the next bend there could be a mirror perfect 

lake, a secret trout stream, vast native forests, rolling 

farmland or friendly country villages. Discover the

MANGAKINO MUST-DO’S 

• The Waikato River Trail – suited for both walkers and 

mountain bikers, the winding tracks encompass the 

beauty of native bush, historic landmarks, rock 

formations, farms, wetlands and of course, extensive 

lake and river views. 

• Watersports – Mangakino has 6 freshwater lakes 

in close proximity, making it a great base for 

wakeboarding, waterskiing and trout fishing. 

Lake Maraetai is used as a venue for rowing training, 

powerboat competitions and a wakeboarding 

school. The National Wake Skate and North Island 

Wakeboarding Championships have also been held 

here. Lake Whakamaru is home to the Water Ski Club 

which provides a lakefront clubrooms and water ski 

access. 

• Paddle a kayak across one of the numerous small, 

sheltered lakes around Mangakino. Paddling across 

a mirror flat lake surrounded by forest and farmland 

refreshes both body and mind. 

• Trout fishing is in this area is popular with boaties and 

fly fishing enthusiasts alike. The local trout so rarely see 

anglers they’ll probably wave at you! 

• The Pureora Forest Park – pay a visit to “Pouakani” 

Totara tree, the largest known Totara in New Zealand, 

which is over 1,500 years old and over 40 metres tall, 

and the geographical centre of the north Island. 

The Park is also popular with mountain bikers. Enjoy a 

picnic at Mangakino’s picturesque lakefront followed by 

a relaxing walk along the lake edge. 

• Play a round of golf - try out the challenging Mangakino 

course; enjoy the lake views and meet some of the local 

talent. 

• Check out the Dams – park the car and walk over 

the impressive Whakamaru or Waipapa Dams.

Using Turangi as an accommodation base you can easily 

access the Tongariro National Park off SH47. 

This part of the region is just spectacular. Because of both 

its powerful beauty and enormous cultural significance, 

the Tongariro National Park is one of only a handful of 

sites in the world to be given dual World Heritage status. 

It covers 79,598 awe-inspiring hectares, and comprises the 

mighty mountains of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. 

Ruapheu is the largest and most accessible active volcano 

in New Zealand. It forms the southern tip of the Taupö 

Volcanic Zone, which stretches from Ruapehu to just past 

White Island, off the East Coast of the North Island. ‘Rua’ 

means ‘pit’ and ‘pehu’ means ‘to explode’. 

MT RUAPEHU/TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK MUST DO'S 

• Put your hiking boots on and let your feet take you 

across the spectacular landscapes of the Tongariro 

National Park. With tramps ranging from 2 hours to 6 

days, covering desolate fields of volcanic ash 

and scoria, scrublands and tussocklands, glacial valleys 

and tranquil lakes. 

• The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is often described as 

New Zealand’s best one day alpine trek, and is an 18km 

trek covering some of the most dramatic landscapes 

you’ll ever see, passing over varied and spectacular 

volcanic terrain. 

• Ski or board New Zealand’s largest ski areas, 

combining Whakapapa and Turoa. The ski fields of 

Mt Ruapehu cover over 1,800 hectares of lift accessed 

terrain. The best snow months are July to October. 

• In summer you can take a chairlift ride up Mt Ruapehu 

and enjoy lunch at the highest café in New Zealand. 

• Mountain bike the 42nd Traverse, considered by 

many to be the best one day mountain bike ride in 

New Zealand. Not for the faint-hearted, bone 

shattering downhills and lung busting uphills combine 

to make this an experience not to be forgotten!

• Cycle or walk the Old Coach Road, part of the 

“Mountain to Sea” national cycleway. It’s a cobblestone 

road built over 100 years ago to provide coach 

transport for rail passengers travelling form Ohakune 

to Raurimu. It can be started in Horopito and finished 

in Ohakune. 

• The Department of Conservation’s Summer 

Programme is an excellent way to discover the Central 

North Island's landscape and natural features. Whether 

you’re into exploring caves, flying kites, tramping or 

viewing the wild Kaimanawa horses, there’s something 

for everyone. But hurry, as these activities book out
