Greetings from the <strong>Gre<strong>at</strong></strong> Smokies!<br />

Welcome as an enrollee in Salamanders and Storms: Clim<strong>at</strong>e Change in the Smokies! As you<br />

can see from the schedule, this will be a busy weekend designed to immerse you in various<br />

aspects of clim<strong>at</strong>e change – from its affect on wildlife to ways you can expose your students to<br />

the science and subject m<strong>at</strong>ter. During your weekend <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tremont</strong>, you will share the campus<br />

with a group taking our Southern Appalachian N<strong>at</strong>uralist Certific<strong>at</strong>ion Program on Mammals<br />

of the Smokies. There will also be a school group here from Central Middle School, so you will<br />

see our school programming in action!<br />

This workshop is made possible by a grant from N<strong>at</strong>ional Parks Found<strong>at</strong>ion and the North<br />

Carolina Department of Transport<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

The weekend is right around the corner – this letter will help you prepare for the trip.<br />

Arrival and Departure:<br />

Plan to arrive <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tremont</strong> on Friday, Nov. 2 nd between 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. The program<br />

will begin with supper <strong>at</strong> 6:00 p.m. Arriving before 5:30 p.m. will give you the<br />

opportunity to check in, move into the dormitory, and take a short stroll or sit by the<br />

river before supper. The program will end around 1:00 pm on Sunday, Nov. 4 th after<br />

lunch.<br />

Logistics:<br />

Please download the pre-visit inform<strong>at</strong>ion. Your Visit to <strong>Tremont</strong> contains driving<br />

directions, facility inform<strong>at</strong>ion, ‘wh<strong>at</strong> to pack’ and other important inform<strong>at</strong>ion. Note<br />

th<strong>at</strong> you should bring your own bedding and towels, a daypack for gear, well-worn<br />

hiking boots or sneakers, and old sneakers in case we get in the stream. Please note th<strong>at</strong><br />

food is not allowed in the dorm. Also note, cell phones DO NOT work in the park, but<br />

we now have free wireless in the Activity Center, so you can use email to stay connected<br />

if you bring a laptop.<br />

Pre-readings: Please see the list of recommended readings and websites to familiarize<br />

yourself with some terms and concepts before the workshop. This was strongly<br />

recommended by past program participants.<br />

We<strong>at</strong>her:<br />

It may help you to know th<strong>at</strong> over the past five years, th<strong>at</strong> weekend in November has<br />

been characterized by an average daily high in the mid-60’s° F, and an average daily low<br />

of mid-30’s° F. here in Walker Valley. Come prepared for chilly early mornings! Rain<br />

gear is always necessary here in the <strong>Smoky</strong> <strong>Mountains</strong>. Please bring it along.


Health & Waiver Form:<br />

Please download and print this form, fill it out, and bring it with you to turn in upon<br />

arrival. If you have any special needs, dietary, medical, or otherwise, please return this<br />

form <strong>at</strong> least two weeks before the program. This must be filled out and turned in to us<br />

for you to particip<strong>at</strong>e in the program.<br />

Weekend Special:<br />

During this weekend in the store, we will offer a special 25% discount the book entitled<br />

Sc<strong>at</strong>s and Tracks of the Southeast, which regularly retails for $9.95. This will reduce the sell<br />

price to $7.50.<br />
