TIME & TALENT There are over 1,000 people each year who contribute their time and talent to make GTACS a better place. GTACS is blessed with an amazing array of expertise. This section has been created to highlight a few of the people who use their skills, time, and passion in a positive way. DAY SIGNS Harry (SF ’69) and Patti (Clark – SF ’69) Day have provided a great deal of time, talent, and materials to GTACS over the past 30+ years. From the big Gladhander sign on Cass Street to the myriad of signs for the Gladhander weekend to the decals that advertise GTACS on vehicles all over the region, Day Signs is always ready to provide help. Harry & Patti’s children are Anthony (SF ’94), Matthew (SF ’00), Daniel (SF ‘ 07), Kelli (SF ’09), and Mark (deceased). BRITTEN, INC. Paul Britten (SF ’79) has provided hundreds of banners to a variety of groups within GTACS during the past 20 years. From the “Top 50 Catholic High School” banners to the gymnasium banners, to backdrops for the musicals, the school is very fortunate to have the unique expertise of Britten, Inc. Paul and Darcy’s children are Ann Marie (SF ’05), Kirsten (SF ’07), Paul (SF ’08), Suzanne (8th grade), Mary (6th grade), and Jack (1st grade). GRAND TRAVERSE DIESEL Dan Walters (SF ’79) has generously maintained the GTACS buses for over 30 years. Dan’s expertise was developed early as he began repairing the buses in high school. Dan’s advice and skill with diesel engines have been an incredible blessing. The labor and materials provided by Grand Traverse Diesel saves GTACS thousands of dollars every year. Dan’s children are Paul (SF ’05) and Curtis (SF ‘ 08). REDMOND AUTOMOTIVE John and Linda Redmond have continually serviced the GTACS vehicles for as long as we can remember. Any time there is an issue with a van or utility vehicle, it’s comforting to know that Redmond Automotive is right around the corner. John and Linda’s children are Mike (SF ‘98), Katie Gallagher (SF ’99), and Dan. MIKE BOBROWSKI Mike is the father of Madeline (4th grade), Lilly (2nd grade), Luke, and Christopher. Mike owns and operates a business named Air-N-Energy Consulting. Mike donated a great deal of time and expertise during the recent installation of a new heating system at Immaculate Conception Elementary School. Mike’s assistance resulted in lower installation costs and better controls that will continue to save GTACS money every year with lower energy consumption. BECKY KALAJIAN Becky is the mother of William (5th grade) and Claire (4th grade). It’s difficult to keep track of all the projects that Becky completes to help beautify our schools. From sunflowers at Holy Angels Elementary to landscaping & painting at Immaculate Conception Elementary, Becky is consistently working and organizing a crew of volunteers. GTACS is a better place because of Becky’s passion and creativity. 18 www.gtacs.org
MEMORIAL DONATIONS During the past 20 months, a number of alumni, past parents, grandparents, and supporters have passed away. We are grateful to the families for allowing GTACS to be the recipient of memorial donations in honor of their loved ones. The financial gifts made by family and friends have been used to make GTACS a more vibrant school. What a beautiful tribute to the passion that all of these people shared for Catholic education! “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.” J. Paul Ameel – September 19, 2010 Paul was born on Dec. 29, 1923 in Detroit. After graduating from De La Salle High School, Paul served our country in the U.S. Marine Corp. Paul and his wife, Lorna, were blessed with ten children. Education and athletics were two of Paul’s passions. He was a founding member of the St. Francis Athletic Association. Dorothy Alice Beckett – November 9, 2010 Dorothy was born on April 12, 1924 in Saginaw. Dorothy and husband, Jim, had four children and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in February of 2010. Dorothy was employed by the Record Eagle for 26 years and was very active with St. Francis Church and GTACS. Jean Ellen Britten – March 7, 2011 Jean was born on October 4, 1935 in Detroit. She graduated from Immaculata High School and the University of Detroit. Jean and her husband, Norm, were blessed with six children. Jean taught at GTACS for 20 years. She was honored as an Outstanding Educator by the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce in 1986 and 1998. Marilyn A. Buell – August 5, 2010 Marilyn was born on September 11, 1915 in Traverse City. After graduating from St. Francis High School she attended nurses training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Manistee. Marilyn and her husband, Royce, had four sons. Marilyn loved her Church and her School. Helen M. Burkholder – September 12, 2010 Helen was born on March 21, 1913 in La Clede, Idaho. She married Everett Burkholder in 1941 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City and together they had two children. Helen was a member of the St. Francis Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Retired Teachers Association. JOHN J. DREVES – MARCH 13, 2011 John was born on June 14, 1932 in Traverse City. John married Zelna Puishis in 1954 and was blessed with five children. John was a proud veteran, having served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. John was active in St. Francis Parish, the PTA, and the St. Francis Athletic Association. He was president of the Association when the school received its first, brand-new bus. John also coached 8th grade basketball at St. Francis for eight years. Victoria A. Hanson – November 10, 2009 Victoria was born on August 17, 1910 in Gills Pier. She married Alvin Fredrickson in 1953. After Alvin passed away, she married Theodore Hanson in 1974. Victoria was a music teacher and enjoyed teaching for many years. Stuart D. Hubbell – September 22, 2010* Stuart was born on December 12, 1927. He married Marian in 1952 and together they had seven children. Stuart served in the U.S. Army in both World War II and the Korean War. Stuart was instrumental in the creation of a unified GTACS Board of Education in 1969. Stuart’s legal guidance during the early 1970’s was critical in keeping GTACS open. He also helped to form the regional Right to Life chapter. Stuart was inducted into the GTACS Hall of Fame in 2008. Waldo Thomas Keating – June 11, 2009* Waldo was born on September 16, 1930 in Petoskey. He attended Central Michigan University, where he played football. Waldo and his wife, Marcia, were blessed with eight children. Waldo moved to Traverse City in 1971 to become the head football coach and assistant principal at St. Francis High School. In 1973, he coached his team to win the Class “D” State Football Championship and later served as a “press box” coach for St. Francis. Waldo “retired” in 1993 and began offering his time and talents to St. Francis Church. Waldo was inducted into the GTACS Hall of Fame in 2009. William F. “Bill” Kildee – September 2, 2010* Bill was born on January 31, 1923 in Traverse City and was a lifelong member of St. Francis Church and a 1942 graduate from St. Francis High School. After graduation, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. In 1980, Bill married Virginia and together they had a blended family of ten children. Bill was a charter member and past president of the GTACS Board of Education, where his negotiating skills were instrumental in insuring that GTACS would remain open. Bill was inducted into the GTACS Hall of Fame in 2009. Mary Eileen Knape – December 6, 2010 Eileen Knape was born on August 26, 1962 in Lansing. Eileen and her husband, Steve, were blessed with three children. Eileen worked at East Traverse Catholic Federal Credit Union and was a member of St. Patrick Church. Eileen was a loyal supporter of GTACS and served as Band Booster Treasurer. John R. Knorr – April 30, 2010 John was born March 27, 1943 in Budapest, Hungary. John and his wife, Perrie, moved to Traverse City to raise their two daughters. John was a retired educator and a member of the Michigan Association of School Psychologists and the supervisor of Long Lake Township from 1984-1988. John was an active volunteer with the Gladhander Auction. Theodore Stevens Kramer – February 7, 2010 Virginia M. Kramer – September 21, 2009 Ted was born on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Virginia in 1948, enjoying 61 years of marriage and the blessing of seven children. Ted retired from the FBI after 28 years of service in 1975. Virginia was born on November 15, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio. After graduating from Notre Dame High School, Virginia moved to Washington, D.C., and was employed by the Department of War. Ted & Virginia were active members at Immaculate Conception Church and were active in numerous activities at GTACS. Elizabeth H. Luczek – November 1, 2010 Elizabeth was born on February 15, 1927 in Petoskey. In 1947, she married Raymond and was blessed with three children. Elizabeth was an active member of St. Francis Church. William F. “Bill” McGee – October 4, 2010* Bill was born on June 6, 1928 in Detroit. Bill served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bill was married to Bernie in 1956 and together they raised 9 children. Bill was an usher at Immaculate Conception Church nearly 50 years and also served as President of the Men’s Club. Bill was a member of the GTACS Board of Education and was a mentor and teacher in photography and yearbook. Bill was inducted into the GTACS Hall of Fame in 2010. Irene M. Pleva – January 30, 2010 Irene was born on June 6, 1929 in Cedar. She attended Holy Rosary School through the 12th grade, graduating as salutatorian and earning a full scholarship to Aquinas College. She married Andrew in 1949 and had one daughter. Irene was very active at Holy Rosary Church and a supporter of Right to Life. Irene’s strong Catholic faith was a very important part of her life. Rose Marie Schmuckal – May 26, 2010 ELmer anthony Schmuckal – March 19, 2011 Rose was born on August 10, 1918 in Kingsley. Rose married Elmer in 1938 at St. Mary’s of Hannah and they were blessed with nearly 72 years together along with five children. Rose was a member of St. Mary’s of Hannah Altar Society and was passionate about raising her children with a strong Catholic education. Elmer was born on May 22, 1916 in Hannah. Elmer was a dairy farmer with a strong work ethic and a love for all aspects of farming. He enjoyed his retirement years on Duck Lake, often hosting family gatherings and guiding pontoon rides. Elmer was a longtime member of St. Mary’s of Hannah and St. Patrick’s. Elmer cared deeply about his faith and his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. * KEY: Hall of Fame Inductee Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools Foundation, Inc. The GTACS Foundation has over $1 million in assets and provides over $50,000 in grants to www.gtacs.org GTACS through a number of permanently endowed scholarship funds. The leadership team of the GTACS Foundation consists of 5 priests, 12 lay trustees, and 2 honorary lay trustees. 19
