Lens systems

Biconvex lens system

Biconvex lenses are converging lenses with two outward curved surfaces.

They are the simplest and most common form of lenses used in magnifying

glasses. In contrast to biconvex lenses, plano-convex lenses have

one curved and one plane surface. Plano-convex lenses are used in aplanatic

lens systems. (see Aplanatic lens system).

Non-spherical lens system

The surfaces of a spherical lens constitute a portion of a spherical surface.

Non-spherical lenses, in contrast, differ from the spherical shape. Aspherical

lenses allow to achieve a relatively higher magnification factor

because they minimize the aberrations that are inevitable in the use of

lenses.

Aplanatic lens system

The aplanatic lens system comprises2plano-convex lenses with the

convex sides turned inwards and facing each other. One therefore obtains

a wider sharp-edge visual field with relatively good magnification.

Achromatic lens system

The achromatic lens system comprises at least 2 lenses fastened together

with putty, with the sides facing each other having equal curves. The

lenses are made from optical crown and optical flint. The achromatic

system provides a colourless image right up to the edge of the field of

vision even with high contrast objects.

Mobile hardness test

Nowadays, the hardness testing is applied both in the manufacturing process, in the test laboratory and in the quality assurance.

The traditional hardness test methods follow standard test methods, such as Brinell EN ISO 6506, Vickers EN ISO 6507 and Rockwell EN ISO 6508.

In these mostly stationary hardness testing devices the material hardness is based upon the size or depth of the resulting hardness indentation referred to

the applied test force.

In addition or alternatively to these devices, even mobile hardness testers are used. Most frequently applied methods:

•Impact hardness test: POLDI hammer (see No. 42110, page 862)

•Falling hardness test: Testing device F1 (No. 42140, page 862)

•Rebound hardness testing: Test devices DynaPocket Plus, DynaMIC, as well as the devices ORlON D100 and D400.

In this process, an impact body with carbide ball is pressed onto the tested surface via spring force and defined speed. The ratio of rebound and impact speed

of the impact body is measured and on the basis of these measured values, the hardness value in Leeb (HL) is calculated.

•UCI hardness testing: Test devices MIC 10 and ORlON UCI 1500

In this modified Vickers method, a vibrating rod with Vickers diamond is set into ultrasonic vibrations (70 Hz) and pressed onto the component with a defined

spring force The frequency change (attenuation) is measured which results in relation to the contact surface of the indentation produced by the Vickers diamond.

This means, the softer the test material, the deeper the diamond penetration. In analogy, a large contact surface results in a high frequency displacement.

The characteristics of this test method are based on different physical principles, each having its own hardness scale each which do not correspond to the standardized

hardness test methods!

When these devices shall show the hardness according to Rockwell, Brinell or Vickers, then the values that has been measured must first be converted. The

conversion is made using materials groups stored in the device. In this conversion, different factors, e. B. geometry and mass of the component, surface conditions

are taken into consideration.

I. e. these converted hardness values are no true Rockwell, Brinell or Vickers values, because they were not determined according to the standardised

procedures!

Application: hardness reference plates are indispensable tools for checking the functioning and the

measuring uncertainty of hardness testers.

Requirements to hardness reference plates (HVPL) as calibration masters:

HVPL should embody the measured variable as exactly as possible and represent it unchanged during the

service life. I. e. for the production of these plates a uniform hardness (homogeneity of the structure) over

the complete tested surface has to be aimed at which nowadays is achieved by the correct material

selection and thermal treatment.

as well as the min. distances of the test indentations from each other and to the edge are determined in

the standards.

Calibration of hardness reference plates:

The calibration is performed on a hardness calibration equipment. The test surface is divided into 5 equal

segments, and the hardness of every segment is determined. The calibration value is the average value of

these 5 hardness values.

The range R is determined on the basis of the difference between the largest and smallest measured value.

The relative range Rrel is calculated on the basis of range R divided by the average value.

The inaccuracy of measurement u (according to GUM) is another parameter. It is calculated on the basis of

the standard deviation from these 5 hardness values (standard deviation 2λ - ≤ inaccuracy of measurement

u).

Fundamentals:

Ultrasonic cleaning is one of the most modern cleaning methods. It achieves maximum cleanliness of the

treated parts, even in places which are difficult to access, while being extremely gentle on the material to

be cleaned.

Optimum ultrasonic cleaning depends essentially on four factors:

•cleaning device

•cleaning chemicals

•temperature

•time

Applications:

•suitable for removing grease, oils, fluxes, grinding and polishing abrasives, paint residue, oxide layers,

scales etc.

•compatible with ferrous and non-ferrous materials, plastics, glass etc. (mechanical, electronic, optical

and medical components)

Ultrasonic cleaning terms

•Ultrasonic vibrating systems: the high frequency (HF) energy generated from an ultrasound generator

is converted from piezoelectrical vibration systems into mechanical energy and is introduced into the

bath fluid. This results in millions of microscopic vacuum beads that implode through pressure variations.

This produces highly effective liquid jets which remove the dirt particles from the surfaces of the material

being cleaned.

•Sweep function: with this function, a homogeneous sonic field distribution through continuous displacement

of the sound pressure is achieved. The result is optimum distribution of the cleaning capacity in the

cleaning bath.

•Degas and autodegas function: new cleaning liquid is saturated with air. The bath liquid is degassed to

optimise the ultrasonic effect.

•Pulse function: for additional increase in the performance for very difficult cleaning jobs (only X-tra basic

and X-tra line)

Application: These measuring devices are suitable both for simple and complex component and material testing tasks. Preferred areas of application are

research, development and manufacturing departments, as well as quality assurance and final inspection in various industrial sectors.

They can measure e. g. the forces of tension and compression springs, compressive forces applied to various push buttons, levers or switches, and on a variety

These applications are used wherever quick and precise tension and pressure tests need to be carried out,

e. g. in the first sample test, goods acceptances and final inspection, in the laboratory and production area.

Execution:

Basic unit with two guide pillars (model 101 one pillar) and a vertical movable crosshead, for mounting the

tension and compression measuring unit. For load application, the crosshead depending on the model

Terms of weighing technology

Calibration:

Activities to determine the connection between the issued values of a measuring device or the values presented by a material measure or a reference material

and the relevant, values of a measured variable ascertained through standards under specific conditions.

Remarks:

1. The result of a calibration either allows allocation of measured variable values for display or the determination of corrections for the display.

2. Even other metrological features, such as the effect of influence variables can be ascertained through a calibration.

3. The result of a calibration can be documented, this document is called calibration certificate or calibration report.

DKD calibration:

In the DKD, calibration laboratories of industrial companies, research institutes, technical bodies, inspection and testing institutions are united. They are

accredited and inspected by the accreditation office of the German Calibration Service (DKD). They conduct calibrations of measuring devices and material

measures for the measured variables and measuring ranges ascertained during the accreditation. The DKD calibration certificates displayed by them are a proof

of compliance with national standards.

Calibration:

During the calibration, the authorised calibration authorities conduct an official test in accordance to the calibration regulations. The stipulated calibration

obligation concerns measuring devices that are used in business or official operation, in health safety, work safety, environmental protection or radiation safety

or in transportation, they must be permitted and calibrated as long they are required to guarantee the measuring safety, e. g. if the price of a product is determined

by weighing, during manufacture of drugs or analyses is medical and pharmaceutical laboratories, during the manufacture of ready made packages. After

testing, it is ascertained whether the requirements of measuring properties are fulfilled and whether the calibration error limits have been complied with. With

a stamping, it is certified legally for the test period. The measuring process during calibration and gauging is same.

The EG calibration is the procedure with which an authorised body tests and certifies that the concerned weights - if needed with the reference sample, agree

as described in the certification by the EG type approval and correspond to the applicable standards of the 90/384/EWG guidelines. The authorised body affixes

the EG mark on each weight.

Manual stroboscopes RT-Strobe Pocket LED

Applications:

Determination and testing of the speed of rotation or frequency of vibrations of the rotating or

vibrating systems without interrupting the production process. At places difficult to access, particularly

sensitive systems, as well as for recognising unwanted vibration resonances. Suitable for inspection

of motors, turbines, pumps, fans, centrifuges, paper and film manufacturing, vibrating table, shaking and

vibrating sieves.

Principle of measurement: the stroboscope works with infinitely variable light frequency. For testing, it

is aimed at the object and the flashing frequency is adjusted by pressing the control keys. If the flashing

frequency of the stroboscope matches the frequency of the test object, it appears as if it were not moving.

The frequency displayed is equal to the speed of rotation of the object.

Execution: device with state-of-the-art LED technology and great light intensity throughout its frequency

range, with multiple line LCD display, high setting accuracy and stability. Pressing the (M) key calls up the

setting menu in which the user sets the flash duration in microseconds or degrees, and the delay time

between the internal trigger signal and the flash in milliseconds or degrees.
