Commitment to the Community
Welcome to our 2010 Harrington Hospital Community Calendar!
Ronald P. Carlson
Alan S. Peppel
Edward H. Moore
At Harrington Hospital, we are always focused on providing TLC – Total Local
Care. In order to bring you quality healthcare closer to home, we have opened
satellite physician offices and medical office buildings in the communities we serve,
added more physicians, and upgraded our two main healthcare facilities.
At our larger facility, Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, we opened a cancer
treatment center, a women’s health center, and upgraded our rooms and common
areas, such as the lobby. At Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard in Webster, our new
comprehensive outpatient care center on the site of the former Hubbard Hospital,
we brought digital mammography, the gold standard in mammography, as well as
other upgrades to serve our patients better.
As we are enhancing our nearby healthcare services, we are inviting the
community into Harrington Hospital to visit our quarterly art exhibits featuring
the work of the superb artists who live in our community. Beautiful, highly
accomplished works of art have graced the halls of our hospital since the spring
of 2009. Every three months, a new exhibit is featured on the walls of the hospital
in our mezzanine area. The public has an open invitation to view these works of
art during visiting hours, seven days a week.
We thought the best way to showcase the wonderful art that is featured on
our walls and the ways we are expanding medical care for the community was to
publish our fiscal 2009 Community Report in the form of a community calendar
you can keep in your office or home. That way, as you turn the pages of this calendar
with each passing month, you will see both the new projects Harrington is building
in your community and beautiful works of art produced by talented members of
our community.
This calendar is offered to our community free of charge, as a token of our
appreciation that you have chosen Harrington for your healthcare needs. It’s another
example of our commitment to Total Local Care.
Sincerely,
Ronald P. Carlson, Chairman of the Board 2010
Alan S. Peppel, Chairman of the Board 2009
Outpatient Laboratory
The Outpatient Laboratory at Harrington Hospital moved to a new, convenient location in
February 2009 as part of our ground floor renovation project. It is now right behind Central
Registration when you walk in our main entrance. The area offers patients brand new,
comfortable furniture, enhanced privacy and large windows. The staff distributes breakfast bags
for patients who are fasting or on their way to work. Patients are also given Commitment Cards
that express our commitment to quality and personal attention. It’s a reminder of how much we
appreciate our patients choosing Harrington Hospital for their Total Local Care.
Webster Campus X-Ray Room
Since becoming a part of the Harrington HealthCare
System, the Webster campus has been able to upgrade
several departments. Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard’s
Diagnostic Imaging is one location that has received a
number of updates since the Webster campus became part
of Harrington in May 2009. One update is a brand new
X-Ray room. The room, completed in August 2009,
features the state-of-the-art Shimadzu RADspeed
Radiologic System. The RADspeed is a totally integrated
X-Ray system, designed to perform to the highest standards
of testing. The RADspeed has several impressive design
features, including an impact-resistant table and a rapid
communications system. The unit is designed to be smooth,
quiet and precise. The RADspeed gives the Hubbard
campus two fully functioning X-Ray rooms, making patient
turnover faster and wait times shorter.
Charlton MRI
The first piece of the future Harrington HealthCare at Charlton to come on line was
the Siemens Avanto MRI unit, installed in early 2009. The office began seeing patients
in June of the same year. Offering advanced imaging, shorter exam times, and a quieter,
more comfortable atmosphere, the Siemens Avanto is another wonderful resource for the
local community. The MRI operation is a joint venture with Harvard Medical Faculty
Physicians (HMFP) Radiology and the exams are interpreted by the HMFP radiologists
from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. For more information
on the Charlton MRI please call 508-248-4446.
Harrington HealthCare at Charlton
One of Harrington’s most exciting adventures in 2009 was breaking ground on a nearly 22,000-squarefoot
Medical Office Building, including a magnetic resonance imaging facility, located at the junction
of North Main Street and Route 20 in Charlton. The site opened an MRI center in June 2009, giving
patients local access to one of the most advanced imaging machines in the region. When the entire
facility is complete in early 2010, the medical center will become Harrington HealthCare at Charlton,
offering Primary-Care and Specialty-Care Physicians, Bone Densitometry, Laboratory, additional
imaging services, physical therapy, and Wound Care with Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers.
The Cancer Center at Harrington
We are now proud to be able to offer our patients cancer care right in our community. Our Cancer Center
at Harrington opened in November 2009 and is located on the second floor of the Central Massachusetts
Cancer Center on the Harrington Hospital campus. We offer infusion/chemotherapy services, a resource room,
community education for cancer prevention and detection, pain management care and other outreach services.
Because we are patient focused, we also offer a dedicated social worker who counsels patients and their families
with psycho-social issues related to cancer. That’s because at The Cancer Center at Harrington, we believe in
treating cancer and repairing hope. For more information or to schedule an appointment call 508-764-2400.
Webster ER
The Harrington HealthCare at Hubbard campus is
anchored by an Emergency Room that provides critical care
to our community. Staffed by professional physicians, nurses
and staff, we offer emergency care services 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. We want our patients to feel comfortable
knowing that if they need immediate medical attention,
help is only minutes away. The Webster Emergency Room
handles approximately 12,000 visits each year, and our
numbers have been on the rise in recent months. We
are constantly exploring ways to make our facility better.
A multiple-phase construction plan is in the works for a
renovation of the space to heighten patient security, provide
more square footage per room and increase overall efficiency.
New Patient Rooms
Our new patient rooms offer the latest in technology,
comfort and safety for our patients. They were designed
with input from patients and from our nursing staff. Each
renovated room has a computer for a nurse to easily call
up the patient’s records, a Spot Vital Signs machine,
which is an electronic device that monitors blood pressure,
temperature and pulse oximetry (oxygen level). In addition,
over each bed is an electronic overbed lift which allows the
patient to be easily lifted. The beds are so-called “smart
beds” that mold to fit the patient’s body, and each one has
a built-in scale to weigh the patient. For patient comfort,
each room comes with a modern bathroom that is handicap
accessible and includes a pull-down seat in the shower. Our
renovated rooms are part of a $12.5 million renovation of
the hospital main building that is designed to bring state-ofthe-art
technology and safety to our patients.
Charlton Harrington Physician Services
Harrington works tirelessly every day to fulfill its goal to provide advanced, local medical care
to all of Southern Worcester County. Harrington Physician Services (HPS) recently renovated
a medical office building at 61 North Main Street in Charlton. Junjie Fang, M.D., and Asma
Islam, M.D., both specializing in Family Practice, began seeing patients at this site in 2009.
For an appointment, please call 508-248-6872. The medical office building is just blocks from
the site of the new Charlton MRI and future medical office building, easily allowing patients
to utilize both sites for medical testing and care.
From the Auxiliary
Financials
Dear Members of the Harrington Hospital Community,
We hope you are enjoying the artwork in the pages of the 2010 Harrington Hospital
Community Calendar. This is just a small sample of the wonderful work that is produced
by the artists in our community.
The 12 pieces featured here were created by artists chosen to participate in “The Art Exhibit
at Harrington,” a joint effort between the Auxiliary and the hospital staff. We solicited entries
from artists who live or work in the Harrington Hospital community. The opening of the first in a
series of three-month exhibits was on April 1, 2009. The artwork is on display on our Mezzanine
level and it is also for sale by each individual artist. Contact information is available at the exhibit
or through our Volunteer Services Office.
The Harrington Hospital Auxiliary is an organization whose members volunteer their time
and talents to support and enhance the services of our community hospital. Our many fund
raisers provide Harrington Hospital with monies for projects and patient comfort and care.
Our continued interaction with the community provides a vital link between the hospital
and surrounding communities.
On June 20, 2009, we ended an eight-and-a-half month fundraising journey for the new
Cancer Center at Harrington with a spectacular “Evening Under the Stars” that was attended
by more than 500 people. This Auxiliary-run event was organized to recognize and celebrate
not only The Cancer Center at Harrington but its many supporters. The evening’s high point
was our presentation of a check for $150,000 to Harrington President and CEO Ed Moore.
We continue to sell bricks for a Walkway of Hope leading up to The Cancer Center, which
is on the main hospital campus in Southbridge.
Annually we give out scholarships to area students embarking on careers in healthcare.
This past year we awarded four $4,000 scholarships. The money for these scholarships is raised
from our Annual Lucky Duck Day in April. In addition, our Appropriations Grant Program last
year contributed a total of $28,895 toward hospital equipment and projects.
To learn about upcoming Auxiliary events, please read your local newspaper and check our
website, www.harringtonhospital.org.
One of our exciting events in 2010 will be the opening of our newly renovated, enlarged
Gift Shop. Our creative and talented managers will have a display of beautiful gifts and
floral arrangements for your shopping pleasure.
We also welcome new members from all the communities that are a part of the Harrington
family. Men and women 18 years or older, please come and share your time and talents with
us. For more information, please call Kelly at the Volunteer Services Office at 508-765-6472.
Sincerely,
Helen Santilli, President, Harrington Hospital Auxiliary
