HOLY DAY OFFERING UPDATE
We are still in the process of enteri ng all the Holy Day
offering information into ourfilesforthe FeastofTabernacles
and last Great Day, so we do not have final figures at this
time , but we would like to give you the preliminary numbers in
By Sta nley R. Rade r
PASADENA - Now that we are
com pleting the negotiations for the
sale of the two campuses (Brickel
Woo d, Eng land, and Big Sandy,
Tex .) I would like to share some of
the deta ils with you .
As early as 1973, Mr. Herbert
Armstrong had determined that both
the Big Sandy and Brickel Wood colleges
should be closed. This is a task
that could not be 'accomplished overnight
as there were a number of person
nel and financial considerations
to be hand led . The rest of the story
has already been told.
In J974 we closed the Brickel
Wood college and approached the
firm of Cl unon s of Londo n to assist
us in tbe sale of the campus. We had a
numbe r of interested parties, both
from England and foreign countries,
but we were unable to co me to a
. equitable agreement until the middle
of this year. We fil!.aIly ag r ee~ on a
~ _..,
price 'of 2 mi1lion pounds (approximately
$4 million) for the sale of the
campus. .T bls is more than o ur investment
in the property .
The Big Sandy campus, closed in -.
1977 when all college operations
were co nsolidated in Pasade na, has
now recei ved one offer of purchase
that is being cons idered bytbeexec u-'
tive c omm itt ee. T he offer is
SIOO,OOO higher than o ur origi nal
asking price and about 25 percent
higher than the estima ted market
value we had obtaine d in July. We
have been carrying the ca mp us'
value on our books at approximately
S8.4 million .
We fed that we have been good .
stewards in these transactions . We
have not lost money on these transactions
nor have we obtained unreasonably
high return s. It is our intentio n
to utilize the funds received from
these sales as an investment that will
provide much-needed underpinning
for our working capit al, and at the
A Feastfarewell
The Fe ast of Tabernacles .
1978, is over. For some it may
have been their first; for others
their fifth , 12th o r even 25th. For
my fam ily it was the 20th . From
all indications as report s come in
to T~ Good News from aroun d
the world others felt as we did
that it was a mov ing , encouraging
and uplifting Feast. A Feast that
dep icted peace ,and unity. One
that ':'Ie will riot soon forget.
However, it is easy to slip back
into o ur routine of life and forget
the spiritual and physical lessons
we learned during this past Pesrival
season .
The following poem , written
winner in the 1977 Feast of
Ta bernacle s Canadian YOU Talent
Great Day at the Festival sue we
attended . I felt it was worth y of
sharing with all our reade rs. .
By Val J. Aspenns
Wit h the singi ng of the final hymn
and a closing praye r, anot her Feast of
Tabernacles becomes histo ry . · We
can easily recall the inspiring, meaningful
messages given from the pulpit
and can still savor the millen iallike,
abundant, joyful living experi
enced dur ing the eight days or mo re.
Probably we all feel encouraged, uplifted
,and spiritua lly rejuvenated .
And as a result of the Feast , we've
come away with a ' greater sense of.
comm itmen t, ded ication and resolve
1~w~r4~ ~ " . H~..lY,~ rk . , ~"4 life in
general. ... ....
But will this reso lve arid renewed
enth usiasm last? O r will it be as
short-lived - as the proverbi al
New. Year's reso lution, which lasts
.about as long as the hangover? Will
this year's Feast give us an added
spiritual boost that will raise us to a
higher. spiritual plane of existence
whereby we will personally reflect
the image and characte r of Je sus
Christ more profoundly than eve r before?
. .
Kno wled ge put ' t~ use
The answer · lies ~O l so much in
what we ' ve heard , or seen or experi
, enced, but in what we will person ally
·do right now and in the days ahead .
. As Herbert W . Armst rong has often
said. know ledge is of no real value
· unless it is put to use . Thi s is espe
ci ally true in respect to spiri tual
knowled ge. What will we' do with
our Feast expe rience? Will we use it'?
Wi.1I we ponde r over it, and build
upon it, o r will we let it lie dormant
and die a slow death ?
It' s quite cle ar that unless we use
the know ledge and apply it to our life
·and circumstances, it will be lost,
perhaps never to be rega ined. There
is an old motto, " use iror lose it." It' s
si mp le, yet so profound. W hen
viewed in this light, it seems that our
optio ns are somewhat limited. It is
hoped we' all will make the righ t
choice and with God's help will use
the spiritual momentum of the Feast
to success fully proje ct us through
another year, no matter what obstacles
or trial s this life may bring, individually
o r as a Wo rk .
Paul led the way
In anoth er time , in another setting,
a man named Paul trod this same
Christian road before us. He wasnot
unfamiliar with the tri als and tests of
life. Few can match his reco rd " of
labour s, of beatin gs, of imprisonments,
of perils', of fastings ..
(see II Cori nthians II). His life is a
glowing example of how to be a
Chr istian no matter the ci rc umstances,
be it in poverty or wealth, in
' sick ness o r in health, If the stress of
life is see ming ly too much, take
heart, Paul has been there . He overcame
and freely gives us the bene fit
of his experience.
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Ch rist ,
,I predati ng the recem jogging -fad; on a
. number of occ asions used an-intere sting
ana logy comparing o ur call ing to
. a race and exhorted us to '". : . run
with patience the race thai is set before
us" (He brews 12:1).
To participate in thi s race 'yo u
don 't have to be a beautifully condit
ioned athlete. There is no specific
age qual ifi c ario n c- and the rac e
chairman doesn 't even' di scriminate
agains t women . But yo u.do have to
be aC hristia n-c- willing to wo rkh ard
and put o ut,a lot of effo rt;
A tong-distan ce run
The race Paul alludes to is not a
short 60- o r lOG-yard dash over a
perfectl y level aruflcial running turf
encompassed by sta nds fiBed ..with
admir ing, cheeri ng fans. It is more
like a long distance cross-country run
winding ove r unpaved dirt o r gravel
roads as well as hard con crete , with
stretches of level gro und and hilly ,
gut-wrenching terra in.
Because of the long distance , the
field of runners spreads our quic kly
and you may feel you' re runni ng all
alone. At other times, you see runners
pass you and yo u' re tempted 10
. drop o ut in disco uragement. After
"all, who would know (or care) ? And
then there's the pain of blisters or j ust
.plain .fatigue. W hat a relief it would
be to quit. There' s also the double
threa t of heat and humid ity. which
can sap your strength, but you go on .
The drive and resolve has to come
from within' ast here are no cheering
throngs to ' encou rage . you along
but , finally , the long-awai ted finish
line.
While only one can come in f irst,
when you've run bard and done your
best, you know yo u' ve won . Th ose
who have experienced this know the
joy of running . Al the end of his life
the apostle Paul expressed thisjoy.
knowi ng he had run his spiritual
mar athon well and won the crown of
righteousness (ll Timo thy 4:8) .
We must r un
We -Christians have been called
and chosen to partici pate in this race
for eremal life. To reject this opportunity
co uld mean our salvat ion . So
run we must , day byday, week by
week . Along the route we mi ght
stumble at time s or have to sto p
momentarily at an aid station for
some thirst-quenching wate r, but
remember that Pau l, who was tried
· and tested in much tbe same manner ,
is_cheering u·5'on ; ··5o run, that ye
may obtain [the prize]" (I Corinthians
9:24) .
. .
The Feast of 1978·is over , but for
us the challenges and ' trials !O f ' 1ife~remain·.::Wehave·
been ' g iven the
'knowledge, and we have the tools, It
" is-now o ur responsibi lity to meditate
on the bless ings we have been given , .
Mr. Armstrong and this Work in it' s
The apostle Paul met his challenges,
accompl ished his work and
ran his race. He won his crown . We
", too have a crow n prepared for. us.
"Behold,) come quickly: hold fast
which thou hast, that no man take thy
