This non-CME workshop is designed to provide practical information<br />

and hands-on experience for participants who may care for patients<br />

being supported by the <strong>Heart</strong>Mate II® (Left Ventricular Assist System)<br />

LVAS and optional CentriMag® RVAS. The topics for presentation<br />

and discussion are related to routine care and problem resolution in<br />

VAD-supported patients. Specific topics include:<br />

Program Description: This non-CME actaivity is an overview <strong>of</strong><br />

hyponatremia and the management <strong>of</strong> patients presenting with<br />

hyponatremia in the hospital setting.<br />

1. Selection <strong>of</strong> patients for VAD support<br />

2. Common early postoperative problems (patient and device)<br />

3. Routine outpatient exam; patient review and device<br />

interrogation<br />

4. Echocardiography for diagnosing specific problems and<br />

assessing recovery<br />

5. Making changes to the VAD systems (operating parameters<br />

and equipment)<br />

6. Troubleshooting problems with device and patient (case<br />

presentations)<br />

Expert cardiologists, nurses and Thoratec clinical support staff will<br />

be available throughout the workshop to give presentations and for<br />

discussion. Case studies will be used for presenting problem-solving<br />

information. Patients currently supported by the <strong>Heart</strong>Mate II LVAS<br />

will be available for discussion with participants.<br />

The main focus <strong>of</strong> presentations and discussions will be the use <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Heart</strong>Mate II LVAS. GoGear® System Components for the <strong>Heart</strong>Mate<br />

II will be available for hands-on learning and discussion. Working<br />

<strong>Heart</strong>Mate II and CentriMag pumps attached to mock loops will be<br />

available to simulate operation. A simulated outpatient clinic visit with<br />

a <strong>Heart</strong>Mate II patient will also be conducted.<br />

The schedule <strong>of</strong> events will be posted onsite. No preregistration is<br />

necessary. However, participants must be registered for the HFSA<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>Meeting</strong>.<br />
