This non-CME workshop is designed to provide practical information
and hands-on experience for participants who may care for patients
being supported by the HeartMate II® (Left Ventricular Assist System)
LVAS and optional CentriMag® RVAS. The topics for presentation
and discussion are related to routine care and problem resolution in
VAD-supported patients. Specific topics include:

Understanding Hyponatremia: Treating Beyond the
Primary Diagnosis

Program Description: This non-CME actaivity is an overview of
hyponatremia and the management of patients presenting with
hyponatremia in the hospital setting.

1. Selection of patients for VAD support
2. Common early postoperative problems (patient and device)
3. Routine outpatient exam; patient review and device
interrogation
4. Echocardiography for diagnosing specific problems and
assessing recovery
5. Making changes to the VAD systems (operating parameters
and equipment)
6. Troubleshooting problems with device and patient (case
presentations)
Expert cardiologists, nurses and Thoratec clinical support staff will
be available throughout the workshop to give presentations and for
discussion. Case studies will be used for presenting problem-solving
information. Patients currently supported by the HeartMate II LVAS
will be available for discussion with participants.
The main focus of presentations and discussions will be the use of the
HeartMate II LVAS. GoGear® System Components for the HeartMate
II will be available for hands-on learning and discussion. Working
HeartMate II and CentriMag pumps attached to mock loops will be
available to simulate operation. A simulated outpatient clinic visit with
a HeartMate II patient will also be conducted.
The schedule of events will be posted onsite. No preregistration is
necessary. However, participants must be registered for the HFSA
Annual Scientific Meeting.
