The Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent
Fund
The RCN Benevolent Fund is not a government agency.
It was established in 1942 with money contributed from
wartime Canteens and Naval Messes. Eligible for
assistance from the RCNBF are serving members of the
Canadian Forces who entered the RCN prior to February
1, 1968; former members of the RCN with a minimum of
one year’s service; some members of the Naval Reserve
and former members of WRCNS.
The definition of ‘dependent for the purposes of
assistance from the Fund include wives, widows and
children up to 16 years old who are, or were actually
dependent upon the earnings of the applicant.
Applications for assistance are considered as special
circumstances, emergency or distress, real need resulting
from illness accident or other unforeseen misfortune.
There can be assistance for educational needs now
expanded to include grandchildren of naval veterans, and
travel assistance (when caused by serious illness of
death). The RCNBF receives the majority of its
applications from former members and dependants on
fixed incomes, where real need is demonstrated. The ratio
of elderly people in Canada has increased over the years,
placing greater demands on the Fund for home repairs,
household appliances, medical assistance and family
emergencies. All enquiries are confidential.
