March 2013 - Convention on Biological Diversity

Dear friends, partners and supporters,

for the beginning of spring and hopefully soon rising temperatures, we would

like to briefly present our latest topics and work to you. We are very happy, if

you forward the information to everyone interested:

Ocean Competition. Apply now!

From now on and until the 15th of April,

pupils from all over Germany can apply for

a one week cruise aboard research and media

vessel ALDEBARAN. To enter the competition

you have to be in the 9th grade or

above and forward your own research idea.

The ong>2013ong> Ocean Competition will deal with

topics were humankind has already surpassed

earth's natural limits: biological diversity,

nitrogen cycle and climate change.

A jury of active scientists from renowned

institutes, like the Alfred Wegener Institute

(Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research)

and the German Ocean Museum

Stralsund, will nominate the successful candidates

that participate in the research expeditions

together with a scientists of their

respective field during the summer holidays.

The marine competition has been

awarded many times and a team from 2012

became the nation-wide winner of the

competition „Youth researches“ with the

topic: Plastic garbage in the sea.

(There, you will also find the last press release.

Please publish it and forward it.)

Action day in Lübeck „Experience diversity“

/ GEO-day of Diversity

Much discussed but barely recognised: local

biological diversity. Because of that we

participate in the GEO-day of Diversity

from the 31st of May to the 2nd of June in

cooperation with science management

Lübeck. We call for school classes to apply

for the competition “SailingLab Diversity

within the framework of the action days

“Experience Diversity” in Lübeck.

Founding of the German Ocean Foundation on the day of the Oceans

After a long time of preparation we are

awaiting the founding of the German

Ocean Foundation on the day of the

Oceans. The aims of the interdisciplinary

foundation are: supporting the regular

exchange between all German

stakeholders in the marine field, to make

the knowledge for utilisation and

protection of the oceans available to the

public and to put maritime topics and

their chances for Germany to the attention

of the public. Especially Germany's role as

a leader of innovation in ocean related

fields and the firm integration of the topic

ocean within the educational sector shall

be enhanced and pushed forward by the

interdisciplinary approach between

science, business, politics and society. A

first coordination meeting will take place

in the beginning of April at the Federal

Press Office in Berlin.
