Auditorium dedicated to
‘Jungle Jim’ commander
By LAUREN SAGE REINLIE
Florida Freedom Newspapers
Fifty years ago then-Col. Ben King organized
a ragtag group of airmen for a secretive, allvolunteer
special operations mission known as
“Jungle Jim.”
Although King couldn’t have known at the
time, that first mission in 1961 was the genesis
for what has grown into the Air Force Special
Operations Command, the heart of Hurlburt
Field today.
On Friday Oct. 7, an auditorium at Hurlburt
was dedicated to Brig. Gen. King, who died in
2004 at age 84.
“It’s an honor,” said King’s daughter, Alicia,
who traveled from San Francisco to attend the
ceremony. “My father would be humbled. He
wouldn’t enjoy any of this at all. He was just a
Southern boy doing what he thought was right.”
An experienced fighter pilot in World War
WII and the Korean War, King was handpicked
to oversee “Jungle Jim,” which at the time consisted
of a group of men without a well-defined
mission who were flying obsolete World War II
aircraft at Hurlburt.
King organized the men and within five
months the unit was sent to Vietnam to fight a
secret guerilla war from the air. It was the first
combat flying unit sent to Vietnam in the ’60s.
King was commander of the unit, known as
the 4400th Combat Crew Training Squadron,
from 1961 to 1962.
Hurlburt Field had no other combat units at
the time.
“You wouldn’t have recognized it then,” said
retired Maj. Gen. Richard Secord, who was involved
with the operation in 1961. “The local community
didn’t have any idea what was brewing.”
Today, Hurlburt is headquarters for AFSOC, a
program which Secord said has grown from a few
hundred people to “quite a few thousand” since
that first operation in 1961.
The dedication ceremony coincided with the
annual Air Commando Association reunion on
Oct. 8.
A bus brought a few dozen people in town
for the reunion to the dedication ceremony on
Friday.
“I’m happy to see a number of old air commandos
in the audience,” Secord said during his
keynote speech at the ceremony. “I didn’t mean
to say old, but they’re old. I can say it because I’m
one of them.”
Secord, president of the Air Commando Association,
said more than 900 people registered
nick tomecek | Daily News
Alicia King, daughter of Brig. Gen. Benjamin H. King, unveils a portrait of her father Friday
Oct. 7, during the dedication of King Auditorium at Hurlburt Field.
for the reunion this year, doubling last year’s
participation.
The group will be celebrating the 50th anniversary
of “Jungle Jim” and the 20th anniversary
of Desert Storm.
The nonprofit organization also raises money
to help Special Operations airmen and their families
with expenses such as extra medical care or
travel to a fallen airmen’s funeral, Secord said.
“We try to support the Airmen of today as well
as the heritage that went before us to make sure
it’s not forgotten,” he said.

Organizers prepare for this year’s memorial march
By MONA MOORE
Florida Freedom Newspapers
Two months ago, Special
Tactics Airmen had no plans
for any memorial event. The
CH-47 Chinook helicopter
crash in Afghanistan on Aug.
6 changed all that.
The Airmen started a tradition
in 2009 after Staff Sgt.
Timothy Davis, a Hurlburt
Field combat controller was
killed Feb. 20 of that year. In
memory of Davis and the
11 (at the time) other Special
Tactics airmen killed in
action since Sept. 11, 2001,
airmen marched more than
800 miles carrying batons,
each with the name of one
of the fallen.
The march is only done
if a Special Tactics airman
is killed in action during the
year. Since the tradition’s
start, the airmen have
marched every year.
“We almost made it,” Maj.
Kristi Beckman, a spokeswoman
for the event, said
of not suffering a casualty
this year.
This year, the memorial
march from Lackland Air
Force Base in San Antonio
to Hurlburt Field will have
17 batons for Special Tactics
airmen. Three of them
are new: Staff Sgt. Andrew
Harvell, 26; Tech. Sgt. John
Brown, 33; and Tech. Sgt.
Daniel Zerbe.
Harvell trained at Hurlburt
Field and Brown’s father
lives in Destin. Brown
and Zerbe were assigned
to the 24th Special Tactics
Squadron (STS) at Pope
Field, N.C. The squadron
falls under the Air Force
Special Operations Command
at Hurlburt.
Master Sgt. Robert J.
Bartleson knew and worked
with all three men. Before he
was assigned to Hurlburt’s
Special Tactics Training
Squadron (STTS), he was on
the 24th STS’s Red Team.
He will carry Harvell’s
baton and the Red Team flag
when he marches.
“I wanted to carry all
three,” Bartleson said. “I
was the team sergeant for
the Red Team and handpicked
the three of them
for my team.”
He said Zerbe always had
a smile on his face, Harvell
didn’t have an enemy on the
planet and Brown was the
best Special Tactics airman
they had.
“He was just incredible.
Just at another level … definitely
ahead of his peers,”
Bartleson said.
Bartleson decided to
march in the memorial and
again help organize the
march after attending his
final Chinook funeral Sept.
11. Just weeks into preparation,
Bartleson said this
memorial will be bigger than
the last one.
Last year, the memorial
march included batons for
Air Commandos and Army
Rangers killed in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Bartleson welcomes
the participation of
other troops, especially on
the last 5-mile stretch Oct.
26, when friends and family
of the fallen Airmen will join
the marchers.
Bartleson said he hoped
to see the participation of
every American in honoring
the men.
Beckman has been working
on that. She has contacted
civic groups in every town
along the route and asked
that they cheer them on.
Beckman will be posting
on the group’s Facebook and
Twitter accounts and updating
the blog along the route.
The march also is a fundraiser
for the Special Operations
Warrior Foundation
(SOWF). All of the proceeds
collected along the route will
go to the nonprofit organization
that pays for the needs
of dependents of troops
killed in action or training.
The foundation covers
counseling, financial assistance
and a college education
for each child. With the
addition of the 31 children of
the Chinook crash victims,
the organization has helped
911 children.
The organization also
sends $2,000 to anyone
wounded in action in order
to cover the expenses of
flying family to the hospital
treating them.
“We have given out $1.2
million in that program,”
said Wayne G. Norrad, one
of three local SOWF board
members.
Spectrum House focuses on military families
By Mona Moore
Florida Freedom Newspapers
CRESTVIEW — When
Laura O’Brien wanted to
take her children to an
autism center closer to her
Milton home, she opened
one. When she saw the
need for centers in Navarre
and Crestview, she
opened them, too.
O’Brien named the centers
Spectrum House. She
said the name refers to the
disorders she treats, which
are on an interconnected
spectrum and have varied
levels of the neurological
disabilities.
The Spectrum team
of educators and board
certified behavior analysts
teach severely autistic
children to speak and
adults how to take care of
themselves. The program
also helps people with
attention deficit/hyperactive
disorder and downs
syndrome.
Behavioral and educational
services at the
centers include life skills
training, Applied Behavior
Analysis (ABA), language
assessment and Individual
Education Plans (IEP).
Three of O’Brien’s nine
children have an autistic
spectrum disorder. Of the
children, O’Brien’s son,
William, has the severest
case of autism. She saw
the power of ABA therapy
when William learned to
speak at 8 years old after
years of unsuccessful
speech therapy.
“ABA has really opened
up the door for him,” she
said.
O’Brien said the years
William was unable to
communicate were a
nightmare. Like many
autistic children, the
frustration of not being understood
led to aggressive
behavior.
Jodi Schmidt’s youngest
daughter, Victoria,
was diagnosed with autism
shortly before the
family transferred to the
area with the 7th Special
Forces Group (Airborne).
The 2-year-old was obsessively
compulsive about
her things and would not
speak or play with others.
The family settled in
Crestview then discovered
there were no therapy
services in the northern
part of the county. Schmidt
was referred to Spectrum
House’s horse therapy
program by Eglin’s Exceptional
Family Member
Program. She was so impressed
with the program
that she became the Crestview
office’s manager.
A year into the program,
3-year-old Victoria
hugged and welcomed
her dad home for the first
time. Schmidt was really
moved when Victoria
spontaneously told her she
loved her.
Victoria even has made
friends with another Spectrum
client and played
with a doll.
“She was playing like
a typical child,” Schmidt
said.
O’Brien said ultimately,
the primary clientele for
the new centers will be
the military. Therapists
have had to help several
families deal with deploying
parents and other
military-specific issues.
The three sites now accept
TRI-CARE.
O’Brien said she came
up with the idea to open a
center on her way to one of
her three weekly treks to
a therapy center in Destin
for her children. She was
worried about how the
family would cover the
cost of therapy in a few
years when her husband
retires from the U.S. Coast
Guard.
she said.
In less than a year,
O’Brien started the three
local centers that offer
therapy to children and
young adults with developmental
disabilities. She
plans to open a center in
Pensacola within the next
six months.
She said she also hopes
to open a coffee house
near each center where
families can socialize, hear
guest speakers and learn
about local resources
while their loved one is being
treated.
O’Brien’s 9-acre homestead
had a second unoccupied
house on it that she
and her husband turned
into their first center. As
rewards for children who
were doing well in their
sessions, the O’Brien’s
started taking them swimming,
horse therapy and quarterly
camps.
Some of the space is
used as a mock apartment
where adults learn
to prepare meals, clean
been known to walk clients
and for parents.
“The first time the mom
goes a week without being
hit, bitten or scratched is a
big one,” she said.
The typical therapy session
is about $40 an hour
(one of the least expensive
rates in the area) and the
nature of the therapy is to
repeat tasks for months.
O’Brien hates turning
people without insurance
away but the overhead for
the new locations make
charity almost impossible.
She collects donations and
plans to do fundraisers
to offset costs. Spectrum
House has a program
where people can sponsor
a child’s therapy.
“With donations, I hope
someday to be able to tell
people, ‘OK, today’s session
is $5,’ ” she said.
A big part of therapy
with the children is playing
with toys. O’Brien said
when an autistic child is
given toy cars, he does not
make car noises and pretend
to drive them around
the room. He organizes
and lines them up.
The turnover rate of a
toy in Spectrum House is
fast. When a child finds a
toy and gets to the point of
playing with it in a traditional
way, that toy is his.
O’Brien buys used toys
whenever possible. And
accepts donated books and
toys at all of the locations.

Clock tower to stand at Beal Memorial Cemetery
By KARI C. BARLOW
Florida Freedom Newspapers
FORT WALTON BEACH
— City officials have approved
a plan to build a
veterans clock tower at
the entrance to Beal Memorial
Cemetery.
A group of local veterans
proposed the tribute
tower in August and recently
got the City Council’s
OK.
“Here in Fort Walton
Beach we don’t have anything
like this,” said Gene
Carroll, president of Veterans
Tribute Tower Memorial
Inc., which is raising
money to build the monument.
“This is a military
town and (military) retirement
town. These veterans
deserve something.”
Jeff Peters, the city’s
recreation and cultural
services director, told
council members last
week that the tower will
be a good addition to the
cemetery.
“We feel … like that is
an excellent place for it,”
he said. “I think it will be
an enhancement to the entrance
of the cemetery.”
Plans call for the 30-
foot clock tower to sit
inside the Beal Parkway
entrance. It would be surrounded
by brick pavers
and 2-foot-tall circular
brick wall.
“The flag pole would
actually be moved behind
the tower,” Peters told the
council.
Local veterans advocate
Tom Rice said he
likes the idea of placing
the tower where residents
regularly gather on Memorial
Day and Veterans
Day to honor the military.
“The decision to put it
in a place where we honor
our veterans and our
active-duty folks and the
families of all our military
members is just so appropriate,”
he said. “I am going
to do everything I can
do to help them make it
happen.”
Veterans Tribute Tower
Memorial Inc. is a nonprofit
group that plans to raise
$250,000 for the tower and
$50,000 for the brick pavers
and maintenance.
“We’re going to different
organizations, any
organization that will
listen to us,” said Carroll,
who added that the
group also accepts private
donations.
Carroll said he hopes
community groups will
host events to benefit the
clock tower.
The tower will be built
by The Verdin Co. of Ohio.
It will feature four 3-foot
clock dials with backlit
canisters and a customcast
250-pound 24-inch
bronze bell. The tower
7373364
can be programmed to
play chimes and patriotic
music.
After bringing the tower
to Fort Walton Beach,
workers will cast the bell
Breakfast Specials
Starting at $ 3.99
on site and invite the public
to watch the tower being
assembled.
Carroll said his group
hopes to have it in place
by October 2013.
Spouses’ return makes
families complete again
By MONA MOORE
Florida Freedom Newspapers
One-year-old Ella Arnold stood
in front of her mom staring at
a man 3 feet away dressed in
fatigues and squatting down
to her level.
With a grin from ear to ear, the man
held out his arms and beckoned the
timid, blue-eyed beauty to him.
After a few seconds Ella stuck out a
silver slipper, took one timid step and
then rushed into her dad’s arms. Senior
Master Sgt. Kemnon Arnold picked up
his youngest child and gave her a dip
and zerbert kiss that made her laugh.
Arnold was one of about 150 Airmen
who returned to Hurlburt Field on
Thursday morning Oct. 6, from deployments
in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was
quickly ambushed with hugs and kisses
from his 8-year-old son Nathan, 3-yearold
son Ethan and 5-year-old daughter
Alyssa.
Laure Arnold made two signs to welcome
her husband home. One included
handprints of each child that said, “Welcome
home, Daddy. You left handprints
on our heart. You complete us.”
Shalimar resident Samantha Place
joined her mother-in-law Janet for the
homecoming. They held signs to welcome
home Staff Sgt. Matthew Place.
Actually, Samantha’s sign welcomed
home “Porcupine,” a name Matthew
earned after kissing her with a
prickly unshaved face. It was his first
deployment.
“It’s hard when your husband deploys.
Everything breaks,” Samantha
said.
As Porcupine entered the hangar,
she raced and jumped in his arms,
wrapping her legs around him.
Betsy Mier and her three children
lived with her parents in Niceville while
her husband, Maj. Jason Mier, was deployed.
He was one of dozens of airmen
from Cannon Air Force Base, N. M.,
who returned via Hurlburt, and the only
one who will stick around for longer
than a layover.
Betsy said she missed having Jason
around to help. She had her hands full
with twin 9-month-olds Addison and
Rebecca and their 6-year-old brother,
Nicholas.
“They were barely crawling when I
left and now they’re almost walking,”
Jason said of the twins.
The Guice family had a few milestones
while Sgt. Pharaoh Guice was
deployed. He missed 6-year-old daughter
Jorden’s first ballet recital and
preschool graduation, his wife Erica’s
birthday and his daughter Lauren’s second
birthday.
Erica was just glad her husband
would be home for the holidays and
grateful she got to talk to him while he
was away.
“We talked just about every day,”
Erica said.
The family had one stop to make on
the way home. They were headed to
surprise Jorden at Holley- Navarre Primary
School. She had no idea Pharaoh
was back in town.
Seconds after Staff Sgt. Shawntobia
Morgan introduced her mom to Destin
resident Capt. F. Bart Doyle, he had
only one question, “Where’s Ke?”
Doyle said he was tired and excited
to be home. He missed his wife most
of all. His friend Shawntobia missed
her son, KeAndri Morgan. She bent his
ear talking about her 6-year-old while
deployed.
Shawntobia’s mom, Marilyn Knox,
flew in from Ohio to take care of Ke
while she was deployed. Mom and
son Skyped and emailed each other
constantly.
Marilyn waited for her “baby girl”
with cards and roses in her hand. She
said Shawntobia was a great mother
who was obsessed with her little boy.
Shawntobia wanted to know what her
son was wearing to school each day,
when he got his hair cut and how each
day of school was for him.
Marilyn said Shawntobia volunteered
to deploy so that she could have
some control in the length and time of
the deployment.
“It was a very good experience,”
Shawntobia said. “Now, I’m ready to
find my bag and get my baby.”
Commissary boss: Critics overlook efficiencies
Tom
Philpott
Military grocery stores
operate so efficiently that
the discounts provided to
shoppers are worth double
the value of tax dollars
being spent to deliver this
prized benefit worldwide to
U.S. service members and
families.
Joseph H. Jeu, director
of the Defense Commissary
Agency (DeCA),
made that point and more
in an interview last week
amid rising speculation
that commissaries could
be targeted for cuts under
national debt reduction
plans being readied by
Congress and the Obama
administration.
In return for the “$1.3
billion that we get in appropriations
support” annually,
Jeu said, “we are
providing nearly $2.7 billion
in savings to patrons.”
That more than “two-forone
return
on investment”
is
“something
people
don’t think
about. It’s
really an
excellent
investment
for
taxpayers.”
As national debt climbs
toward $15 trillion, and
politicians confront a crisis
decades in the making, talk
in Washington is of cutting
federal entitlements like
Medicare and Social Security,
and slashing future
defense budgets. Commissaries
have become part of
that conversation, thanks
to a long-standing suggestion
by the Congressional
Budget Office.
CBO says that up to
$1.7 billion a year could be
saved by ending commissary
subsidies, combining
base grocery and department
stores into a single
system and cutting shopper
discounts to 5 percent.
The diluted discounts
could be eased in part with
a new grocery allowance,
CBO advises.
Last December, the
Simpson-Bowles commission
on budget reform listed
base store consolidation
as one of many possible
cuts to federal spending.
In August, the Senate Veterans
Affairs Committee
liked the CBO idea enough
to include it in a bill to create
another entitlement.
The committee voted to
take dollars saved by ending
the commissary subsidy
and redirect them to the
Department of Veterans
Affairs to provide health
care to veterans and their
families who lived on Camp
Lejeune, N.C., during an
era when base drinking
water was contaminated.
The bill, S 277, still faces
procedural challenges
before it can be debated
and put to a vote by the full
Senate. Commissary advocates
fear the committee’s
vote alone has made commissaries
a reasonable
target of savings to achieve
higher priorities, like new
debt reduction goals.
Meanwhile, defense officials
are studying ways to
achieve $400 billion in budget
savings over 10 years
as ordered by President
Obama earlier this year.
And under a separate deal
reached between Obama
and Republican congressional
leaders this summer
— this one as a condition
See boss page 11

oss From page 10
for raising the debt ceiling
— a new “super committee”
of lawmakers must
find at least $1.5 trillion
more in debt-cutting initiatives
over the decade
or automatic cuts of $1.2
trillion, by design, will hit
both defense budgets and
entitlements hard.
“I don’t want to speculate
on what could happen
but I have heard the same
rumors as you have,” said
DeCA Director Jeu.
Commissary patrons
are concerned, he said.
Jeu’s senior enlisted advisor,
Army Command Sgt.
Maj. John M. Gaines Jr.,
travels often and “gets
feedback from a lot of
junior members who say
‘Sergeant Major, commissaries
are critical to us. We
cannot make ends meet
without them.’ ”
Rather than comment
on any particular threat to
stores or savings, real or
perceived, Jeu chooses to
explain the value commissaries
create for both shoppers
and taxpayers, “even
in a fiscally constrained
environment.”
First, he said, DeCA
has a tradition of efficiency
that other agencies would
do well to emulate. When
adjusted for inflation, the
$1.3 billion annual appropriation
is 40 percent
below what DeCA got in
1992, when it was formed
through consolidation of
service-run grocery stores.
That’s savings of about
$700 million a year to deliver
the benefit, Jeu said.
Commissary shoppers
save on average 31.7
percent over commercial
store patrons. The savings
likely are less, he
conceded, if price comparisons
are made only for
Walmart or other major
discounters.
Even then, Jeu said,
“I’m confident our prices
(are) much better … It
could be 15 percent. It
could be 20 percent. Who
knows? But it will be much
greater savings (overall)
than in comparison to
Walmart.”
Manufacturers and vendors
enrich it even more
each year with “ancillary
support” such as charitable
contributions, scholarships,
and special events
and promotions. DeCA estimated
those were worth
$244 million in 2010.
director last January, Jeu
spent about the first third
of his 32 years in government
working with Army
and Marine Corps commissaries.
He remembers
base stores 30 years ago
being more like warehouses.
They carried about
half the number of products
being stocked today.
None had their own bakery
or deli or fresh seafood
section.
“Thirty years ago our
savings were probably
running about 25 percent,”
Jeu said.
He credits the larger
savings today to a more
professional staff. DeCA
employees are better
trained, armed with better
data and have skills
to manage categories of
items far more efficiently.
“It really is more than
a grocery store,” Jeu said.
Commissaries “are an integral
part of the military’s
compensation system.
That’s something people
are forgetting.”
