You don’t have to be reminded of the economic problems weighing down our families, communities, state and nation. The recession has hit us, too. We’ve seen home construction stutter and nearly stop, rising unemployment, increased operating costs and 20 percent reduction in industrial demand for electricity. Add to this wholesale rates that are trending upward and we have the proverbial “perfect storm” of negative factors. However; we all are in this President’s Report By Glenn Miller together. We continue to take steps through the last several years to reduce our costs and become more efficient. Every penny we save and each process we streamline produces bottom-line benefits for the co-op and its member-owners. In this month’s Country Living magazine, an article reveals what Ohio electric cooperatives are doing to become leaner. Please don’t get the impression that we’ve not always been fiscally conservative. It’s the tradition of your electric cooperative program to plan and properly time expenditures, decide thoughtfully and spend carefully. We answer to you, the membership, after all, not to profit-hungry stockholders. The Board of Trustees of Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative has always demanded transparency and accountability. We justify everything we buy and the projects we launch. Here at Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative, we have been concentrating on doing more with the tools and technology that are available. Every procedure and business practice has been under review. Co-op employees find themselves wearing several different hats, instead of just one. Broader training and education—combined with technology and streamlined organizational structures— provide the opportunity for them to assume further responsibilities without sacrificing effectiveness. “Things are tough all over,” the old saying goes. We don’t know when economic conditions will improve. Not even the economists and financial experts can predict when the corner will be turned, or even what the corner will look like from the standpoint of indicators such as national gross domestic product, retail sales or employment. However, Holmes-Wayne Electric Cooperative, its Board of Trustees and employees are committed to working smart and in a cost-effective manner. People are struggling to make ends meet and wondering how they will pay the bills, including the electric bill. Your assurance as a co-op member-owner is that we are doing all in our power to reduce operating and administrative expenses so what you pay for electricity is as close as possible to the actual cost of generation, transmission and distribution. And as we all know, being a member owner, all margins after expenses are returned to you the members in capital credits. Country Living/October 2009—29
