Embedded in the hilly terrains
of the Hildesheim Börde, the
runs of the Leine and Innerste
Rivers, the Leinebergland Hills
and the foothills of the Harz
mountain range, Hildesheim is
located just 30 kilometres away
from the State Capital Hanover.
The centre of the region, the city
of Hildesheim with its population
barely fewer than 100,000
residents, is looking back on
a nearly 1,200-year-old history.
In 2015, the city‘s big anniversary
will be celebrated. The
genesis of the city is closely entwined
with the foundation of
the Diocese. The Bishops Bernward
and Godehard had a decisive
influence over Hildesheim‘s
development. Because of the
significance of the Diocese‘s
development around St. Mary‘s
Cathedral, the reopening of the
UNESCO World Heritage Church
will open the festivities on the
occasion of the anniversary.
