Genesis
In the first phase of financial sector reforms, a need was
felt to develop an Institute of Higher Learning, which
could also provide Operational Service Support in
Information Technology to Banks and Financial
Institutions.
In 1994, the Reserve Bank of India, formed the
Committee on Technology Upgradation in Payment
Systems. This committee recommended the setting up
of an Information Technology Institute for Research and
Development as well as providing Advisory Services in
the Application of Technology to the Indian Banking
and Financial sector.
As recommended by the Committee, the Reserve Bank
of India, established the Institute for Development and
Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), in 1996, as
an autonomous centre for Development and Research in
Banking Technology. The Institute is governed by a
Governing Council, consisting of the top management
of Reserve Bank of India, Academic Experts and
Industry Leaders.

The Mission of the Institute is to:
be a Globally Reckoned Centre for Research,
Development and Advisory Services in Banking

create a pool of Banking Technology and
Information Security Professionals through
innovative educational initiatives
impart Quality Training to the Banking and
Financial Industry
be the Leading Institute of the Financial Community
on Technology Issues.
IDRBT Initiatives
IDRBT has pioneered technology absorption in the
Indian Banking and Financial Sector. The Institute has
taken the lead in every aspect of Banking Technology,
DISCUSSING STRATEGIES: Dr. Y.V. Reddy, Governor,
Reserve Bank of India, with Dr V.P. Gulati, Director, IDRBT
right from Technology Infrastructure Creation, Research
and Development to moulding the Technology Talent
for the Sector.
In a short span, IDRBT has taken a series of
major initiatives such as setting up the INdian FInancial
NETwork (INFINET) - the nationwide communication
backbone for the Industry, becoming a Certifying
Authority under the IT Act 2000, launching the
Structured Financial Messaging System (SFMS) for
secure flow of financial messages across the industry and
implementing the Mail Messaging System for enabling
secure communication within and among organisations.
In the academic arena, the Institute started a unique
M.Tech. course in Banking Technology and Information
Security, a fast-track Post Graduate Programme in
Banking Technology Management and a Ph.D
Programme in the areas of Information Technology and
Management in association with reputed
Universities/Institutes. IDRBT also offers a bouquet of
highly customised Executive Development Programmes
to keep the sector abreast with the latest.
