Managing Retailing
October 14-19, 2013
The Indian retail sector has grown at a frenetic pace in the last decade with an increased acceptance of organized
retail formats. The A T Kearney Global Retail Development Index (2011) has ranked India as the fourth most attractive
nation for retail investment among 30 emerging markets. The Business Monitor International India Retail Report
has projected that the total retail sales would grow from US$ 411.28 billion in 2011 to US$ 804.06 billion by 2015.
The underlying factors for this optimistic growth of organized retailing is the untapped potential and favourable
government policy initiatives. In 2010, the organized retail was estimated to have a 6 percent share in the Indian
retail industry (Booze and Co India Private Ltd). The Indian government has also sanctioned 51 per cent of FDI in
this sector. These factors along with the increasing disposable income, expanding middle class, and development
of organized infrastructure have made this sector very attractive to both the Indian and foreign retailers. Apart from
metros, organized retailing is penetrating the tier-II and tier-III cities as well as the rural markets.
In this context of new challenges and opportunities, a new business model needs to be evolved. A programme
focusing on the retail context in India and issues in retail management will add value.
Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to
• Explore the changing value as sought by customers at the retail point
• Understand the challenges faced in delivering the required values
• Expose the participants to the key approaches to managing retailing
• Learn from some of the best practices
The perspectives would be from both brand owners (in terms of managing retailing) and retail businesspersons (in
terms of managing the retail business).
