Escossois (Rouen, 1662).<br />

The Capuchino escoces tells the story of a Scottish Protestant, George Leslie, who<br />

converted to Catholicism. Under the name Fr. Archangel he became head of Catholic<br />

missions to England and Scotland. Fr. Archangel told his story (largely fictitious) to<br />

Giovanni Battista Rinuccini, Archbishop of Fermo, who printed it in 1644 under the<br />

title Il Cappuchino scozzese. The book became a bestseller, and was translated into French,<br />

Spanish, Latin, Dutch, German and English as well as Portuguese.<br />

FIRST EDITION of these poems by a Portuguese Communist Party militant, historian<br />

and translator. A second edition was published the same year.<br />

Provenance: Luís Manuel Monteiro Baptista (1926-2009), distinguished Portuguese<br />

physician and Communist Party militant, published a number of articles in<br />

scientific journals.<br />

FIRST and apparently ONLY EDITION of these autobiographical poems by a<br />

Portuguese Communist Party militant, historian and translator. There is a section on<br />

Peniche (1957-1958, pp. 9-44), “Gostar é Transformar” (1970-1971, pp. 45-86), and “Sonetos”<br />

(1970-1974, pp. 87-131).<br />

Provenance: Luís Manuel Monteiro Baptista (1926-2009), distinguished Portuguese<br />

physician and Communist Party militant, published a number of articles in<br />

scientific journals.
