THAILAND TRADE & INVESTMENT MISSION TO U.S.<br />

SUMMARY:<br />

The Board of Investment of the Government of Thailand (BOI)<br />

sponsored a visit by some 30 Thai private businessmen to United<br />

States industrial plants and business firms during a two-wepk<br />

period beginning April 29, 1968 and ending May 13, 1968. The<br />

objective of the Mission was to explore possible joint ventures<br />

with U.S. investors, opportunities for increasing American investment<br />

in Thai ventures, and for increasing Thai imports of<br />

U.S. products.<br />

The idea for the Mission originated with<br />

Dr. Amnuay Viravan (12), Secretary General of the BOI; and to<br />

some extent the Mission may have been a result of the policy<br />

of the USOM/Bangkok to encourage the Thai to take the initiative<br />

in attracting foreign private investment. The Mission<br />

arrived in Chicago (over the North Pole) from Europe on Sunday<br />

afternoon, April 28, and after three days in Chicago, split up<br />

into four teams for visits in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit and<br />

Cleveland.<br />

On Sunday, May 5, the Mission assembled in New<br />

York and spent Monday through Wednesday, May 6-8 at the<br />

American Management Association Seminar, which was very well<br />

received by both Thai and American participants.<br />
