The vagus nerve as modulator of intestinal immune homeostasis
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: The central nervous system interacts dynamically with the immune systemto modulate inflammation through humaoral and neural
pathways. Recently, the parasympathetic nervous system, via the vagus nerve (VN), has beenproposed to play a crucial role in the regulation of the
immune response through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAIP). Stimulation of the VN induces the release of acetylcholine that
dampens the activation of immune cells by interacting with the alpha-7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. We recently provided evidence that VN
stimulation potentlyreduces intestinal inflammation triggered by abdominal surgery suggesting vagally-mediated modulation of the intestinal immune
system. Based onthese findings, we hypothesize that the vagal innervation of the gastrointestinal tract plays a major role in sustaining intestinal
immune homeostasis. Preliminary experiments indeed show a reduction in T regulatorycells and loss of intestinal tolerance following vagotomy.
Modeling of high-enthalpy plasmas. Wetenschappelijke begeleiding van Dhr. Michael Kapper.
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Abstract: The research institute 'VUB' and the 'Van Karman Instituut - VKI' have entered into a service-agreement concerning the project' Modeling
of high-enthalpy plasmas'. The research results can be transferred to the company, there can be a reasonable return in case of commercialisation
or there is another kind of agreement on intellectual property, as outlined in the concluded agreement.
Probabilistic programming using MCMC sampling for robotics.
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: The thesis will investigate the use of statistical relational learning techniques in the field of robotics, with a focus on the areas of robotic
navigation and robotic manipulation. The goal is to have autonomous mobile manipulation robots that can perform complex grasping, manipulation
and transportation tasks in a real world environment, andthat can autonomously navigate in indoor and outdoor environments in order to perform
their tasks. In order to achieve this goal, statistical relational representations will be developed that generalize over various object and environment
types and represent world knowledge. Concepts for probabilistic inference, relational knowledge representation and learning manipulation skills
both from demonstration and imitation and prior experience will be developed. The thesis will build on current research in statistical relational
learning, robot navigation and manipulation and imitation learning in order to develop new technologies advancing the state of
Calculation or Donation? Choosing Partners in the Formation of Coalitions at the Local Level
Ghent University
Abstract: This project scrutinizes the choice of partners to form a governmental coalition at the local level. It combines a quantitative approach
testing the validity of hypotheses of the rational school of coalition formation (assuming the decisive importance of size and policy) with a qualitative
counterpart drawing on insights of the inductive school (that refers to the importance of motivation, history and institutions).
