Editorial
Dear business associates,
After two difficult years the world economy is once again
picking up speed. Overall economic indicators are looking
increasingly positive. The dynamic macroeconomic
development of the years 2007-2008 is particularly moving
forward in the so-called BRIC countries. Most European
countries, too, are experiencing a turnaround. It is to be
hoped that the raw materials markets can be further
stabilized with regard to prices and delivery times, thereby
setting a solid foundation for stable and sustainable growth.
Crises not only contain risks, they also offer opportunities,
the greatest of which is the opportunity to implement change.
Changes in business can be achieved in a variety of ways:
through products and technologies, markets and marketing,
internal procedures and productivity. Those who can see crises
not only as threats, but first and foremost as opportunities for
improvement and implementing changes faster than usual,
will emerge from these crises stronger. As simple as this
ancient wisdom may sound, it can be difficult to put it into
action.
We at KALTENBACH, too, had to cope with a drop in turnover
in the double-digit percent range in 2009. Since the second
quarter of 2010, though, things have been picking up sharply.
All of our production sites are now working to capacity once
again, and our orders currently on hand reach well into 2011.
In the past few months our development department has been
able to hire additional personnel. Because of this we will be
able to introduce a total of seven new products to the market
this year.
One of our greatest challenges this year has been the
acquisition of the Gietart Company in Hengelo, The Netherlands.
We have been working for ten months now on integrating
the new shotblast and painting business unit into our
group of companies. This step represents a great opportunity
for us to further extend our market position as a system
provider in the area of sectional and plate steel processing.
You will find all the current topics in the edition before you
that are of concern to our customers and the KALTENBACH
Group. The integration of the Gietart product area of shotblasting
and painting is the main focus of the edition at hand.
I hope you enjoy browsing through and reading this issue!
With best regards,
The New KALTENBACH Home Page
Find instead of searching!
The Kaltenbach Group has given
its web presence a complete makeover.
Since the beginning of August,
the website at www.kaltenbach.
com has been presented in a new
design format with a contemporary
mix of information and interaction in
both German and English. Even the
home page itself provides a comprehensive
overview of the variety
of information available here.
The home page at www.kaltenbach.
com welcomes visitors to a virtual
environment that uses animation to
invite them into the world of
metal processing and which reflects
the broad range of products and
services offered by KALTENBACH.
Users can quickly get to product
details or any other information
desired via a drop-down menu on
the left of the screen, in addition to
a main navigation bar in the header.
The corporate colour turquoise
against an elegant gray metallic
background dominates the modern
page design. “Find instead of
searching” was the project team’s
maxim, in order that users could get
to their objective in just two or three
clicks. Preliminary feedback from
customers indicates that this
feature is working well. The range
and depth of information available
on the product pages are systemised
using subnavigation
(Machine, Features, Technical Data
and Infeed/Outfeed Side). You
can find the information you desire
with only three clicks, despite the
added layers. For those who prefer
to have a hard copy in their hands
brochures can be printed out. In
addition, various processes have
been animated and are graphically
displayed in numerous video clips.
A “Product Finder” has been
integrated into the main navigation
area so that visitors can quickly and
easily select the right machine from
KALTENBACH’s extensive product
portfolio. After entering just a few
www.kaltenbach.com
parameters the user has access to
the entire KALTENBACH machine
database and is presented with a
tailored product pre-selection.
As a further highlight for circular
and band saws, KALTENBACH
have had a Working Range
Configurator program written.
A machine operator can easily
and interactively check to see
whether the material to be cut can
be processed with a specific saw
blade or saw band and the desired
mitre angle.
“With the relaunch of www.kaltenbach.com
our position on the
Internet now better relates to the
current business activities of the
KALTENBACH brand,” says CEO
Valentin Kaltenbach, who is very
pleased with the new website. The
KALTENBACH website receives an
average of 30,000 page views per
month – an impressive number that
demonstrates its high user value.
Whoever wants to stay ahead of the daily competition in the steel
fabrication and steel stockholding industries has to be at the top in
all aspects of metal processing. KALTENBACH dominates sawing,
drilling, punching, shearing, flame cutting, coping, shotblasting
and painting at the highest possible level. And, as in sports,
top performance can be seen in
the results achieved – from
which our customers profit.
NEW:
KBS 1051
Band Saw Machine
A Quantum Leap in
the Sawing of
Sectional Steel
Three technological highlights
see to a doubling of throughput
when using the new sectional
steel band saw KBS 1051 from
KALTENBACH:
1. The first-ever use of a ballscrew spindle for
the saw-frame feed sees to quiet operation
and reproducible feed rates.
2. Automatic variable adjustment of the saw-band
inclination (AFC = Auto Feed Control) to changing
profile cross-sections.
3. The powerful 12.9 kW saw band drive, which, in
combination with AFC, makes the economical use of
carbide band-saw blades with sectional steel band saws
possible for the first time
Best Times
While a conventional band saw with hydraulic feed takes 4.3
minutes to cut an HEM 400 steel beam, the KBS 1051 does the
job in just 1.38! And keep in mind; this time is achieved under
everyday production conditions. The saw works in step with the
likewise carbide-capable drilling machine from KALTENBACH and
speeds up throughput times of the complete system enormously. An
unbeatable team.
A “winner” has to be the fastest in non-productive times, too: By
means of servomotors the KBS 1051 tackles miter settings at record
speed, as well. And should the order volume allow for a more leisurely
work pace, then it also runs, of course, with the lower-priced standard
bi-metal saw blades.
NEW:
A Gleaming
Winner with the
Gietart Sprint,
Marathon and Triathlon
Shotblast Systems
You can obtain gleaming results in your
production with shotblasting machines from
the Sprint, Marathon and Triathlon series.
Sectional beams and plates are cleaned as thoroughly as
they are quickly. Dual-disc turbine wheels accelerate the blasting
abrasive in stable constant operation. Vertical mounting to the feedthrough
direction ensures optimum shotblasting results at the highest
feedthrough speeds and lowest use of blasting abrasive.
Maximum wear resistance means extremely long service intervals. And when it
is time for maintenance, then it takes place in a hurry since the systems are set up to
be easily accessible with simple replacement of wearable parts. The sophisticated
technology of the systems provides for sparing use of blasting abrasive, which can be
nearly completely recovered. The multi-speed cascading air cleaner removes dust and scale
so that results remain excellent, even when reusing blasting abrasive.
NEW:
KDM Drill Machine Generation Clearly Extends
its Lead in Processing Sectional Steel
The economical and variable use of carbide and solid carbide drills makes the
KDM an indispensable all-rounder when processing sectional steels.
Thanks to the use of the newest motor technology
with noticeably increased drive power, drilling
can be enormously accelerated. And this, of
course, without a loss in quality. On the contrary:
The ballscrew spindle and servomotor provide
for speedy drill bit feed, while the drill carriage is
mounted on dual play-free, pre-stressed linear
guide elements.
The linear tool magazines are positioned
directly alongside the drilling axes. An automatic
tool changing system for the three drilling
axes with a total of 15 tools also saves you
time. In addition, the tool changer is automatically
coupled to speed and feed rate.
This makes drilling, pop marking, countersinking
and thread cutting really efficient.
Successful Integration
of Gietart
Shotblast Systems
Interview with Valentin Kaltenbach,
CEO of the KALTENBACH Group
Welcome to the KALTENBACH Group!
The entire KALTENBACH-SPS staff from
Hengelo (formerly Gietart) visited the parent
company in Lörrach in March.
inTec employees on occasion of
their first visit at KALTENBACH in Lörrach,
Germany, after entering a
strategic partnership in September 2010.
Do you regret the decision to
acquire the Gietart Company?
Quite the contrary! Buying Gietart
out of their bankruptcy was a logical
and proper decision. We are currently
integrating Gietart, with whom we
successfully worked together as
a partner for more than 40 years,
into our group of companies. The
overwhelming majority of our
customers have welcomed this
decision, and have extended the
faith that they have in us to our new
subsidiary, KALTENBACH Shotblast
& Painting Systems (formerly
Gietart).
So there were some skeptics,
too?
Anything else would have been
very surprising. Before the takeover
Gietart was in an extremely difficult
situation: production faltered with
some of the running orders, and
some customers were stuck with
half-finished machines and had no
concrete prospects for reasonable
conclusion of the work. There were
also a number of bad technical
decisions made at Gietart. It was
only to be expected that some of
these customers would want to
seek new orientation, though most
of them accepted our offer to put
things right. And this we did within
the realm of possibilities. In addition
to this, we managed to persuade
important Gietart suppliers to
continue working with us on the
basis of trust, even though the
suppliers themselves had to cope
with the greatest financial damage
arising from the bankruptcy.
And now just about everything
is as it was before?
I certainly hope not. As painful as
a bankruptcy can be for all those
affected, it offers a chance to move
in new directions. From day one
all machines are being built at the
Hengelo site and not, as in Gietart
times, in Turkey and by Gietart
Middle East in the UAE. In my
opinion, the quality and delivery
problems connected with this were
prime factors for the company going
bankrupt.
Construction of the transport systems
has since been moved from Hengelo to
our site in Burnhaupt. The Burnhaupt
factory has specialized for years in the
construction of transport systems and
supplies these in the highest quality.
In addition to this, we have started
a program for the standardization of
components and subassemblies in
order to once more get a handle on
product quality and delivery deadlines
in the face of steadily increasing
productivity.
Lots of things are the same now
as they were before, naturally. We
were able to take on a large number
of employees, some of whom were
with Gietart for up to 40 years. We
now have a workforce of more than
80 highly-motivated employees who
want to actively participate in shaping
upcoming change processes.
What have been the effects of the
acquisition of the Hengelo site?
As I mentioned before, through
the insolvency we were able to
concentrate the operation in Hengelo
on its core competency, i.e., the
construction of shotblast systems.
The roller conveyor system product
range is being further expanded,
whereas the area of overhead
conveyor systems and special
equipment has been put on hold until
further notice. Gietart had to up the
ante in the past here, too, in many
cases.
Thanks to the positive situation with
regard to orders – the workload right
now extends into the second quarter
of 2011 – we will likely be introducing
two-shift operation sometime this
year; something that never happened
at Gietart.
How have you improved efficiency
in Hengelo?
Taking the step to produce everything
in-house once again alone brought
with it a lasting rise in productivity;
not necessarily in cost per unit,
but more so in organizational and
logistics costs, as well as in quality
costs. In order to further increase
productivity with regard to cost per
unit we will be investing more than
€2m in production at the Hengelo
site in the coming months. This will
include a new painting system and a
robotic welding unit for large parts.
What is behind the Synchro
Principle?
The KALTENBACH Synchro Principle
is based on the principle of avoiding
waste, on the principle of drawing
production, on the conveyor principle
and on 5S, to name but a few things.
Focus hereby is on synchronized
production: only what is needed
in the short-term is produced.
Overproduction can thus be avoided
in the simultaneous increased
availability of required parts. Because
of their size, Gietart had always
manufactured their shotblast systems
according to order, and the approach
used up to now will be further
optimized and refined in standardized
form. We have been using Synchro
very successfully at our sites in
Lörrach and Burnhaupt for many
years now.
How do you introduce the
shotblast and painting systems
to the market?
KALTENBACH subsidiaries and
representatives have already sold
Gietart machines in many countries.
Distribution channels had to be
adapted to the new situation in only
five countries. In Germany, one of
the most important foreign markets
for Gietart, we were able to win over
Hansgeorg Wodausch, hitherto their
representative here.
Mr. Wodausch is considered to be
one of the most experienced experts
around in the area of shotblasting
and painting.
As far as the Gietart name goes, we
have acquired the trademark rights to
it. Even though the name Gietart was
affected by the bankruptcy, Gietart
still has a good reputation worldwide.
Because of this we will continue
using the Gietart brand in connection
with the new name, Kaltenbach
Shotblast & Painting Systems.
Apropos painting systems: What’s
up with painting equipment?
The Gietart Company collaborated
very successfully with the painting
systems specialist inTEC in
Solingen for 15 years. More than
250 protective coating machines
were installed worldwide during
this time. In order to protect their
own interests, inTEC aimed to
establish cooperation with one of our
competitors even before Gietart’s
bankruptcy. Since then we have been
able to convince inTEC to continue
working with Gietart or, as the case
may be, now with KALTENBACH. In
order to provide a broader base for
the planned long-term cooperation
between the two companies we
have become involved financially in
inTEC’s activities. The new – though
it has been proven and tested
over many years – Gietart/inTEC
cooperation thus continues in the
KALTENBACH Group and is a kind of
capstone in the acquisition of Gietart.
One last question: What’s
happening with the after-sales
business?
As is generally known with shotblast
systems, the supply of spare and
replacement parts is of extreme
importance. Of course, Gietart’s
supply capability had already
suffered a lot before the bankruptcy
and other manufacturers tried
accordingly to gain business here.
The market has since calmed
down, and the supply of spare
and replacement parts through
KALTENBACH is again ensured.
Because of the large purchasing
volume within the KALTENBACH
Group we have been able to achieve
significant cost savings at this point,
which we are now able to pass on to
our customers through price cuts.
Original Gietart parts are available
now as before from KALTENBACH
in Hengelo. Business with spare
and replacement parts has already
reached last year’s level. We would
next like to press ahead with the
introduction of annual maintenance
contracts tailored to individual
customer needs. With regard to
personnel, after the bankruptcy
we took on all of Gietart’s service
technicians and are thus well
equipped for the future when it comes
to service qualifications.
Many thanks!
Ryan Ordelmans, Sales Director
KALTENBACH Shotblast and Painting Systems B.V.,
Hengelo, The Netherlands
got the tailor-made solutions to
help you get it done,”
says Ryan Ordelmans.
High-Ranking Visit
in Hengelo at
KALTENBACH SPS
At the invitation of Mr. Valentin Kaltenbach,
the Mayor of Hengelo, Mr. F.A.M. Kerckhaert,
visited the KALTENBACH Company
in Hengelo along with the Councilor for
Eco-nomic Affairs, Ms. M.A. ten Heuw.
There they became acquainted with a sound
German family business that fits in well with
Hengelo society. The Mayor and Councilor
showed a lot of admiration and respect
for the investment that KALTENBACH has
made in this company.
This concerns not only machines and
buildings, but more than anything the people
involved, which was very clearly stated by
Mr. Kaltenbach as he told of the tradition
of the in-company vocational training of
young people. The industry certainly has
good prospects for the future if enough is
invested in product innovation and training.
KALTENBACH pays a lot of attention to both
of these, giving the company a valuable role
in regard to the employment situation in the
community of Hengelo.
Statement
“Following a hectic start from the Gietart bankruptcy, we at
Kaltenbach SPS have now reached the formative phase. We are
shaping a company that can provide its customers with willingness
to perform, passion, knowledge and experience, and whose
quality products are entirely built in-house. And I am pleased to
be able to say that things are progressing very nicely indeed.
We wish to thank our customers for the trust they have shown in
us. It is thanks to this trust and the excellent work of Kaltenbach’s
distribution network that our order books are surprisingly well
filled, despite the general economic situation. We started with 65
former Gietart employees, and now there are more than 80 of us!
We want to write success stories with our company, and to show
our customers that we, as part of the KALTENBACH Group,
are the ideal partners for shotblast and painting systems – from
planning to service! We are working full steam ahead on new
developments as well as on numerous measures that will further
improve our efficiency and quality. We have also invested
substantially to this end, for example, in a welding robot for
machine housings and a new painting line.
It’s a good feeling to be able to serve our customers even better
now as part of KALTENBACH.”
Valentin Kaltenbach, CEO of the KALTENBACH Group talking to Mr. Kerckhaert,
Mayor of Hengelo
“We heartily welcome the KALTENBACH subsidiary
in Hengelo and look forward to pleasant and fruitful
cooperation,” the mayor is pleased to say.
From left to right: Ms. M.A. ten Heuw (Councilor), Valentin Kaltenbach, Mr. Kerckhaert
(Mayor of Hengelo), Ryan Ordelmans (Sales Director at K-SPS), Jeannet
and Rene Hartmann (Controlling at K-SPS)
Suppliers’ Day
in Hengelo
In a win-win situation, all partners profit. This is the
best foundation for long-term business dealings. Just
how future collaboration in this sense can be optimized
was the topic of the Suppliers’ Day sponsored
by Kaltenbach Shotblast and Painting Systems B.V. on
September 2, 2010. Forty-three representatives from 26
companies, who together represent some 80 percent
of the purchasing volume of Kaltenbach-SPS, accepted
the invitation to Hengelo.
Good spirits and open dialogue characterized the meeting.
Valentin Kaltenbach presented the KALTENBACH
Group to the guests and explained the important position
the operation in Hengelo takes on in the company
strategy. Executive board member Martijn Geerdink and
purchasing manager Robert Weustink talked about processes
and plans for the future, and explained the
massive investments that have already been made at the
Dutch site as well as those planned for the near term.
SUPPLIER VOICES
“KALTENBACH SPS integrates our
filtration system into its shotblast
system. The cooperation between
Donaldson and Gietart began
some 30 years ago. The Suppliers’
Day at the beginning of September
was a valuable contribution to my
trust in the future.”
Ron Valk,
Country Manager at Donaldson
For nearly 90 years Donaldson has been the leading
provider of self-produced industrial air filtration systems
and replacement parts for the removal of dust, smoke
and fog from production processes. Today Donaldson
has more than 40 production sites, distribution networks,
subsidiaries and agencies around the world.
These investments are part of a concept for optimizing
the production process, wherein suppliers, too, play a
significant role. In future, interim storage is to be minimized
in the supply chain, while the refill series should
also be the order series. The purchasing department
requires partners for this who offer a broad product
range of first-class quality and who can guarantee
delivery times. Together with them we will discuss
and plan concepts for vendor-managed inventory,
warehousing and outsourcing. Suppliers also profit from
such models, since the intensive meshing of processes
also allows for dependability and planning.
SUPPLIER VOICES
NATUS GmbH & Co. KG, with headquarters in Trier, is a
leading provider of custom-made electro-technical and
control system complete solutions for numerous branches of
industry, with focus on swtichgear systems. The company’s
scope of services ranges from medium and low voltage
systems to plant and process automation to control systems
to electro-technical complete solutions.
Natus delivered the complete electro-technical support and
equipment for all shotblast systems of KALTENBACH SPS,
i.e., hardware and software engineering, delivery of switching
systems, initial operation and service from a single
source,“ according to Alfred Zimmer, NATUS employee.
With Gietart and inTEC, KALTENBACH is further
expanding its leading market position as a system
provider for sectional and plate steel processing.
Fritz Weinmann, CEO of Weinmann
Aach AG, and Simon Schulze, Technical
Operations Director, are pleased to
now be able to also provide shotblasted
products according to customer wishes.
KALTENBACH blasts at
At the end of September 2010 the first shotblast system of the Sprint
series in the new KALTENBACH color design was put into operation at
Weinmann Aach AG in Germany.
By the first-time connection of the shotblast system to the T13 transport system
from KALTENBACH, the infeed and outfeed sides could be automated. Via
height and width measuring of the material at the infeed side, the charges of
bars, plates and profiles are automatically positioned in such a way that the
goods to be blasted will be optimally purged of rust and scale. In addition,
the vertically-adjustable brushes are automatically positioned in the shotblast
chamber by material measurement, so no shotblasting abrasive can leave the
machine.
KALTENBACH and inTEC
Conclude Strategic
Partnership
The KALTENBACH Company of Lörrach has agreed to a strategic
partnership with the inTEC Company of Solingen in the area of
painting and coating systems. Accordingly, inTEC painting systems
will be sold worldwide via the KALTENBACH sales network. In addition,
KALTENBACH has become involved financially with inTEC’s
activities, thereby further extending its leading market position as a
system provider for sectional and plate steel processing.
Steel customers can now get all the machines they need for all their
processing steps from a single source – from sawing and drilling
to flame cutting/coping and punching/shearing to shotblasting and
painting. This results in important synergy effects with high customer
benefit.
The entire inTEC team on a visit to KALTENBACH in Lörrach. Valentin
Kaltenbach did not miss the opportunity to personally greet his guests
from Solingen at the railway platform.
Through the strategic partnership
between KALTENBACH and
inTEC, the successful cooperation
between the inTEC and Gietart
companies, spanning more than
15 years, is being continued.
Last autumn, KALTENBACH
acquired the business activities of
the bankrupt Gietart Company, and
founded their subsidiary KALTEN-
BACH Shotblast and Painting
Systems B. V. (short form: KAL-
TENBACH SPS) at the Gietart site
in Hengelo, The Netherlands.
Over the years inTEC and Gietart
installed more than 250 coating
lines worldwide. Well-known
customers include, among others,
all internationally-active steel
trading companies, such as Arcelor-
Mittal, Thyssen and Klöckner & Co.
inTEC is the international market
leader in the area of roller-bed
painting systems for steel sections,
beams and sheets. The
company portfolio includes primer
and top coating systems, UV pipe
coating systems, paint delivery
systems, pre and after dryers,
marking and labeling machines
and special systems.
“More than 25 years of experience in the
construction and manufacture of surface
coating equipment have honed our view of
customer requirements. On the basis of this
awareness we have developed a product
portfolio with which we can comprehensively
cover the most diverse installations. Our
constant innovations and improvements
along with high quality standards guarantee
our customers an optimal cost-benefit ratio.
The technical background of our employees
has proven itself worldwide. In the future we
will consolidate this know-how with the core
competencies of KALTENBACH for the
benefit of our customers.
“The KALTENBACH Company
is the right partner for us.
Our surface coating equipment
is a logical extension to
KALTENBACH’s product portfolio.
This partnership enables us to
offer steel fabricators and steel
stockholders the complete program
for steel section and steel plate processing
from a single source.
A decisive success factor for our
customers,“
says Michael Rödder, General Manager of
inTec
In the past, too, we cultivated intensive
business relationships with partner companies,
above all at the time with Gietart with
the goal of permanently optimizing our
customer support. The strategic partnership
with KALTENBACH is the right step for us
toward a successful future and has logically
brought together what belongs together.”

Industry Trade Fair at KALTENBACH
„International Partners in Steel“
May 9 to 13, 2011
Logistic Process Control
The world is turning faster and faster. KALTENBACH responds to these signs
of the times and has established an event that is unique – the in-house trade
fare “International Partners in Steel..
In recent years IPS has fast become the most
important event of its kind in the world, and
is now an established and much-respected
business event for leading steel fabrication and
steel stockholding companies from all over the
world.
The IPS trade fare traditionally takes place
every two years at KALTENBACH in Lörrach.
During the five-day event, held on more than
3,000 square meters of exhibition space, more
than 40 renowned business partners present
their technological innovations through practiceoriented
demonstrations and presentations.
The Motto for 2011:
Logistic Process Control
A subject that will occupy the
steel fabrication and steel stockholding
industries in the coming years!
KALTENBACH acts hereby as initiator and
organizer of the in-house trade fare IPS – and,
of course, also as an exhibitor – bringing the
right people to the right place at the right time.
2,500 visitors from over 40 countries and five
continents; 1,400 overnight stays; more than
3,500 meals served – the numbers speak for
themselves.
Whether arriving by plane, bus, taxi or car,
seamless comprehensive support is offered to
everyone.
This includes programs that accompany the
trade fair as well: interesting specialist seminars,
excursions to renowned steel fabricators and
steel stockholders in the region, an attractive
activities program for accompanying guests,
exclusive catering in a nostalgic “mirror tent”
with its unique atmosphere, as well as a variety
of evening events such as the popular “log
sawing competition.”
www.ips-fair.com
Logistic Process Control
is the consistent further development of process automation
The focus here is on three key issues:
1. Material flow: How to get the right material to the right place at the right time?
2. Data flow: How to get the right information to the right place at the right time?
3. Feedback: How, when and where is current process data reported back?
Come to IPS 2011 in Lörrach – We have the answer: Logistic Process Control
Exhibitors, associations and customers gladly
use this tailor-made platform in order to learn
about industry-specific developments and
trends, to establish new contacts and to do
business. A unique symbiosis of partners from
the steel fabrication and steel stockholding
industries is thus created.
We cordially invite you today to the next IPS
in-house trade fair in order to experience the
latest industry-specific trends and developments
in steel fabrication and steel stockholding life:
Welcome to IPS 2011.
A very warm welcome to KALTENBACH!
Universal Machines from KALTENBACH
Just in Case
Standard sections of steel and non-ferrous metals are processed in
many branches of industry. This can involve a variety of things, though.
There are always certain priorities to consider depending upon whether
facade elements or cranes are being built, whether we’re talking about
conveyor technology, vehicle manufacturing or engineering, or crafted
metal construction. All of these industries have one thing in common,
however: The universal machines from KALTENBACH offer the optimal
solution to every operation. Two examples from our wide range of
products demonstrate the strengths of KALTENBACH technology:
Innovation 2010: MSK 471 NA
New high-performance
circular saws for steel
Innovation 2010: KKS 463 NA
