Accomplishments of <strong>2009</strong> ‣ All Law Enforcement and Public Safety Officers completed First Aid, CPR and AED training. ‣ During the spring, three K-9 Teams successfully passed the annual federal recertification on their first attempt. ‣ All Supervisors have graduated from the Indiana Association Chief of Police: the Police Executive Leadership Academy. ‣ Employee Recognition Parking Spaces were established for employees. ‣ Patrol rifles were authorized for vehicles. ‣ All police officers were trained and issued X26 tasers. ‣ All Law Enforcement Officers received physical assessment screening, also known as the Wellness Program. ‣ The department began requirements to move forward with the Commission Agency of Law Enforcement Accreditation process. ‣ The PSO’s received diversity and customer service training. ‣ The Honor Guard participated in several events such as the Special Olympics Plane Pull, the September 11 th Memorial Celebration, and the Veteran’s Day Celebration. 4
APD FAST FACTS • The average length of service for patrol officers is slightly over 8 years. James Lancaster has served 37 years with APD. • The average length of service of a Public Safety Officer is 4 years. • The average age of members of the police department is 48 years while the average age of a Public Safety Officer is 44. • In 2008, three police officers left APD for a turn over rate of less than 7%. • Members of the APD participated in over 5,100 hours of In-Service Training. • The total miles ridden on the Segways by the Public Safety Officers was 8,254 miles. • The total Police and Public Safety Officer budget was $5,943,399.00. • APD squad cars averaged slightly over 1400 miles per month. There are 19 vehicles in the police department fleet. • At the end of <strong>2009</strong>, the Police Division had forty-one male officers, seven females, and four vacant positions. The Public Safety Officer Division had thirty-six males, twenty three females, and five vacant positions which includes part-time employee positions. 5
