No fibre dust, excellent print
registration for a clear difference
In terms of print quality ProLiner PP30
is much cleaner on press than any paper
liner because it contains no fi bres,
which means no fi bre dust. Combining
this with the smoother adhesive layer
means not only more precise adhesive
side printing, but also a more dense
looking print effect. Added excellent
print registration and the improved
print quality compared to HG65 liner
is visible. Therefore ProLiner PP30 is the
new choice for quality minded printers.
Reduced downtime, better
productivity, lower total applied cost
Improved productivity and savings are
result of ProLiner PP30 fi lm coils being
around 20 per cent longer at the same
reel diameter than HG65 coils. It means
signifi cant reductions in downtime.
The thinner ProLiner PP30 means that
the reels can be up to as much as
6000 running metres long translating
into fewer reel changes, and to cost
savings. What’s more, the even thickness
means it is easy to die-cut. Because
ProLiner PP30 is about 20% lighter than
HG65, customers will save a roughly
corresponding percentage in their packaging
material, warehouse space and
transportation costs.

more robust than glassine, which means
fewer web breaks and a reduction of

web breaks means that the speed of dispensing
can often be increased, offering

the packed product, label design,

Calculator for Packers. This handy tool
allows clients to enter details of the
packing line process (such as labels per
reel, speed of applicator, time lost per
reel change, cost of downtime etc), and
see the difference it makes to switch
from HG65 to ProLiner PP30.
Mr Fedorowycz explains how this
process helps to highlight the benefi ts
of ProLiner PP30: “It is important for
the client to see the total cost of ProLiner
PP30 and glassine through the entire
process rather than simply looking at
the square metre price – because price
is not the total cost. For example, when
buying a car you don’t only think of the
purchase price but also how much fuel
it will consume, how long it will run,
service costs and resale value. Our sales
people are happy to explore the benefi
ts with each one of our customers.”
Recycling for profit
ProLiner PP30 is also the smart alternative
when it comes to recyclability, as
Mr Fedorowycz explains: “ProLiner
PP30 is easy and less energy-consuming
to recycle than a PET liner. There are
a greater number of PP recyclers across
Asia and many end-use areas for products
made of recycled PP.
ProLiner PP30 is the next
generation liner – available now!
Although fi lmic liners have been on
the market for a number of years for
premium applications such as beverage
and personal care labelling, they have
not, until now, been available as big
volume paper labels. This was mainly
owing to issues of price and economies
of scale. UPM Rafl atac’s recent investment
in new coating technology has allowed
it to develop a fi lmic liner that can
be used with volume paper products.
Right from the start most printers
and packers were of the opinion that
ProLiner PP30 had major benefi ts.
Mr Jon Lenck, Director of the VIP
business segment at UPM Rafl atac, comments
“We are now in the process of
introducing the benefi ts with our customers
along the whole chain, including
packers. We are already working on
signifi cant number of customer projects
and as you might expect, most of this
work is with the leading innovative
printers. We feel the interest in ProLiner
PP30 will increase signifi cantly over

printers and packers become aware
of the productivity benefi ts it can bring

Although ProLiner PP30 is very thin
(30 microns) it provides a very robust
die-cutting platform for label converting.
The even thickness profi le combined with
stable release profi les makes label converting
easy. Naturally the converter has
to have die-cutting tools that are optimized
for this liner thickness. We have
witnessed real-life cases, where the
converter has been able to increase
the press speed remarkably compared
to using a standard paper liner. This
benefi t has been obvious in cases where
the label design is demanding when it
comes to matrix stripping. The result is improved
productivity of the printing press.
A signifi cant benefi t is also the more
dense printing result which is achieved
thanks to a smoother adhesive layer.
Lower weight, less roll
changes, register control
Handling rolls with ProLiner PP30 backing
is easier due to the lower weight of the
coil at the same length as with a paper
liner. When the standard diameter is
kept, the advantage is around 20 per
cent greater length, reducing the number
of roll changes in the press.
Another very important feature we
have seen in practise, is excellent register
control with ProLiner PP30. In the printing
press after changing the coil in the rewinder,
we have noted that ProLiner PP30 returns
to the set print register very quickly
compared to a paper liner. This cuts
down print waste dramatically.
Reduced web breaks in
demanding labelling conditions
As it is a fi lmic material, ProLiner PP30 is
inert to environmental changes (e.g. moisture
conditions), thus remaining constant in
all conditions. This feature reduces web
breaks during dispensing and thus minimizes
down time of the lines. This adds up to
improved effi ciency. It is also possible to increase
the line speed due to the decreased
risk of web breaks.
This provides clear benefi ts for example
in the Food application area, where labelling
conditions can be extremely demanding.
Labelling lines are often located in
conditions where excessive moisture, even
spraying water, can be a reality. Thanks
to its robustness ProLiner PP30 is a reliable
choice in tough conditions.

OBSERVATIONS AND LEARNINGS
FROM CONVERTING TEST RUNS
How does
ProLiner PP30 perform
in converting?
Since its launch we have gathered a lot
of experience from the convertability of
ProLiner PP30 in numerous tests. The following
are some observations from tests and
trials, which prove that ProLiner PP30 has
many advantages also in the converting
phase.
Easy to run on press
We compared ProLiner PP30 to Honey
Glassine 65 with Rafl acoat Plus on Gidue
press and Flint Group’s UV-fl exo colors.
It was surprising how easy ProLiner PP30
was to run on the press. We tried it out
with two different kinds of jobs: Firstly,
with a boot shaped label for detergent
bottle with 5 colors and an over-varnish.
Secondly, with relatively simple square
labels with 3 colors and an over-varnish.
In both cases we fi rst ran a Honey Glassine
65 and then changed to ProLiner PP30.
No issues with web tension on press
What did we notice? We didn’t have any
issues with web tension control. We ran the
materials fi rst at low speeds and then accelerated
the speed from 30 to 120m/min.
Then we made sudden stops but managed
easily to keep ProLiner PP30 coils in
good shape at the rewinder.
The maximum speeds were the
same as with the paper backing and
we even ran the boot shaped labels
with higher speeds than with the paper
backing equivalent. Waste matrix from
both constructions was taken at a 90
degree angle and with the same web
path confi guration. The run was smooth
with no matrix web breaks.
With the boot shaped label we ran
lower web tensions at the press rewinder
than with the paper backing due to
the shape of label layout on the die.
Higher web tension caused creases
near to the core of the converted coil,
which is something that simply has to
be taken into account when converting
with ProLiner PP30, as it is much thinner
than paper and not as stiff either.
Smooth adhesive layer,
no static electricity, no dust
One thing which was very noticeable,
was how smooth and mirror-like the
adhesive layer is. It gave a really good
impact on the printing effect.
What’s more, there was no static
electricity whilst converting to press.
This was quite interesting as the
relative humidity was only 30% when
the converting took place. However, it is
important not to lay the reel on the fl oor
after converting because of the tendency
of static electricity generating to a fi lmic
liner after it has been in contact with metal
rollers. An extremely positive observation
when trimcutting and coil rewinding,
was that there was no dust detected, and
especially no paper dust!
Web tension control important
An important thing to remember when
trimcutting ProLiner PP30 is that it has to
be done with good web tension control
and with fi lmic knives. There is a real difference
with PP and paper in this matter
and poor cutting can result in web breaks
on the applicator or even at the rewinder.
Web tension is important in generating
good label coils, we did not experience
any telescoping issues on label coils with
high speeds when running different labels
on the rewinder. Rewinding was as robust
as with paper backing coils.
Heavy thermal transfer printing –
which means loads of black color and
heat – didn’t cause any issues to ProLiner
PP30 either. All in all, ProLiner PP30
made a good impression on our
customer.
When compared to glassine liner, ProLiner PP30
provides a very smooth adhesive surface to achieve
better printing quality.

One of the reasons we decided to develop
ProLiner PP30 for our high volume
paper products is that the used liner is
much easier to recycle than conventional
liner materials. This is due to the fact
that recycled PP is a widely traded
commodity with versatile application
possibilities, and it requires significantly
less energy to recycle than PET. This
means that used ProLiner PP30 has a
true market value when recycled.

both product marking equipment and
labelling materials, continually seeking
faster, more cost-effective and sustainable
solutions. Sales Director and head of
label production development Jarkko
Mäkelä points out that it has been easy
to move from a glassine backing to
ProLiner PP30 when there are so many
benefi ts for both parties – printer and
packer.
50% of Meckelborg’s label production
goes to big players in the beverage
and food industries – typical areas
where high-speed label dispensing and
moist conditions are the norm. In cases
like these, Jarkko Mäkelä says that using
paper-based liners has presented challenges
which undermine their effi ciency.

Feedback from Meckelborg’s customers
shows that the robust new liner delivers
on its promise, enabling faster pack
production – because longer roll lengths
mean fewer roll changes – with far fewer
web breaks in dispensing.
Speaking of his company’s experience
after switching to ProLiner PP30,
Mäkelä takes a comprehensive view
that ‘small streams make a big river’:
Meckelborg benefi ts from 20% more
labels on the same size rolls even before
the labelstock enters the printing facilities
due to faster transport with less expense.
But more immediately noticeable
about ProLiner PP30 is the slick adhesive
surface giving a smoother run during
matrix-stripping for faster label production.
‘Pros’ that add up to change
As Jarkko Mäkelä says, the many combined
benefi ts for printer and end-user
all add up, making perfect sense to
leave glassine in the past. Meckelborg
has been witnessing a rising demand
for ProLiner PP30 also among smaller
packaging companies.
Another of the ‘pros’ is that packers
are nearly halving their liner waste.
Mäkelä calculates that at 40 million
labels a year, for instance, 30 tonnes
of incinerated glassine liner waste is a
costly burden – literally burning money!
With ProLiner PP30, packers are
recycling this valuable polypropylene
at no cost to themselves while demonstrating
a responsible attitude to the
environment.
