Five reasons to
choose Newham
Building Control

As building regulations
become evermore
complex clients tell us that
they find our knowledge,
experience, efficiency and
flexibility essential when they
are embarking on a building
project whether it’s big or
small. We’re here to help.
One
Why Us?
Newham’s landscape is one
of the fastest changing in the
capital. In recent years the scale of
construction has been unparalleled
in all sectors. From major projects
like the Olympic Park venues,
Athletes Village, Westfield’s Stratford
City and the ExCeL London
exhibition and conference centre to
local schemes such as the awardwinning
Icona Point and Newham
Homes’ regeneration programme,
expansion has been quick.
Integral to this transformation has
been Newham’s Building Control
team. Backed by our highly
experienced, dedicated surveyors
the service has gained a deserved
reputation for intelligent solutions,
technical excellence and minimum
time scales.
Newham Building Control have
significant experience in working as
an integral part of the design team
on the development of innovative
and sustainable schemes and
structures. Some of which have
broken new ground and have won
national awards.
Two
What you can expect
• Surveyors are available from an
early stage to work as part of your
design team. They can attend design
development meetings, offer options
and solutions on evolving designs
ensuring that all major issues are
resolved prior to submission of your
Building Regulation application.
• Surveyors are available to offer advice
on your design from the outset. This will
ensure valuable input during your design
development before you seek planning
permission. Key issues including site
access for the Fire Service, accessibility
and the number and location of
staircases and lifts can be agreed at an
early stage.
• A dedicated building control surveyor
to book in your application quickly.
• A dedicated project surveyor to work with
you throughout the project. For larger
projects this will be a Principal officer.
• A comprehensive response within
10 working days of the deposit of
your application.
• A staged payment of inspection fees
spread out throughout the
construction project.
• Same day site inspections from a locally
based team. On very large projects we
can base the surveyor on site.
• Short notice, evening and weekend
availability can be arranged.
• Strong ties with other parts of the
Council and the Fire Brigade.
• Ability to undertake the plan
examination process for projects
anywhere in England and Wales.
Three
Our staff
Four
Our Low cost to you
Building Regulation fees can now be
individually tailored for each project.
Clients can directly influence the cost
of the fee which can take into account
the quality of the design package,
the size and timescale of the project,
complexity / repetitiveness of the
design and client’s expectations of the
service.
Five
Access to Essential
Complementary
Services for the
Construction
Westfield
“We have worked with Newham
Building Control on a number of
challenging projects in and around
the Olympic Park where innovative
fire safety solutions were needed
to achieve the best results. We
have always found their team to
be approachable and open to
new ideas. They are professional,
knowledgeable and give an all
round excellent service. It is a
pleasure to work with them.”
Paul Macken
Director
Jeremy Gardner Associates Limited
“On a large, complex, mixed use
scheme such as the Stratford
City Project it is important for
the success of the project to
establish at an early stage a good,
collaborative working relationship
with the Building Regulation
Approvals Authority. We have
established an excellent working
relationship both with the design
approvals and site teams from
the London Borough of Newham
Building Control. Flexibility has
been a key facet of the relationship
with Newham adopting an open
minded approach, treating design
strategies on their own merit even
when challenging established
Building Codes. This refreshing
approach has enabled the
Stratford City Project to push the
boundaries and encompass new
technologies.”
Colin Westwood R.I.B.A
“Stock Woolstencroft
had an excellent
working relationship
with Newham Building
Control throughout the
Icona project, resulting
in an end product to be
proud of.”
Derek Jay
Partner
Stock Woolstencroft
“All inspections were carried out in a timely manner with
all aspects of the construction being inspected. Any
observations were taken on board and dealt with and
completed as soon as possible. The cooperation shown by
the Building Control team went a long way to making this
contract very successful. The final inspections of the flats,
which went very smoothly, were carried out to an intense
programme which relied on a high input from the Building
Control officer. Once again thank you for your help on
making Icona Point a very successful contract.”
Rod Kilby
Senior Project Manager
Telford Homes
Rick Roberts Way
“We’ve worked with the team on schemes
ranging from one million pounds to ten
million plus. Their professionalism and
commitment is always the same. We use
them because they are fair, friendly, helpful
and cost conscious. They aim to find the
best solution for everyone involved.”
“We are pleased to be associated with
Newham Building Control in connection
with this successful project.
We found their flexible approach
and keen contribution to the overall
construction process particularly
helpful, especially at site level.
We look forward to the opportunity of
working with the Building Control team
on future projects.”
“The Olympic Stadium was a high profile, fast track
complex Project, the like of which had not previously been
constructed. The continuous dialogue, co-operation and
help that the Newham led JLAB team gave, considerably
assisted in achieving completion of this Project.”
Mike Breton
Site Manager
Olympic Stadium Contractor

“In June 2008, we won the contract to construct the London
2012 Velodrome. During construction phase London
Borough of Newham worked very closely with us and our
design teams. They assisted in ensuring that this landmark
venue was completed ahead of schedule, and complied
with legislation and the Olympic Delivery Authority priority
themes. The project has been the proud recipient of a
number of recent awards including the Institution of Civil
Engineers Building of the Year and Architects Journal 100
Building of the Year. We look forward in building on our good
working relationship on future developments.”
University of East London
“An ‘info warehouse’ is located at the heart of this resource
centre and business school which was officially opened by
HM The Queen. The striking oversailing roof is designed to
protect users against strong winds from across the dockside,
and to reduce noise and pollution from nearby City Airport. The
building inspector I worked with on this project was without
doubt the best I’ve encountered during my 40 year career. I
can’t speak too highly of Newham’s Building Control team.”
Peter Earl
Project Manager

ExCeL
London
“Newham’s knowledge has
been instrumental in the design
and safety of this project. Site
inspections were scheduled
around the construction
programme and the need to
adjust working times around
other events operating in the
phase 1 building, enabling
management of work to
progress very smoothly.
Newham are currently involved
in the design and construction of
another development at ExCeL
London, a 250 bedroom hotel.”
Kevin Bond,
Head of Engineering
ExCeL London
“We have been very lucky to
have the Newham Building
Control officers on board. ExCeL
London is their ‘baby’ from a
building control point of view
so they have remained more
than interested in it over the
years. When we have changed
something or made alterations,
they have been there to help and
to advise how we can get things
the way we want them – and to
do that everyone in the design
team needs to be flexible. For
example, when the fire testing
begins we may have to work
during the night or weekends,
so Newham has to be flexible
to work these times… they fully
understand the needs of the
business.”
Brian Cole,
Operations Director,
ExCeL London

Flying
Angel
“I would like to thank Newham Building Control for their help
and advice provided on our Flying Angel project in Victoria Dock
Road. Their inspections were always proactive with regards
to the many problems we encountered in the conversion and
extension of this large seamen’s mission into 65 modern flats,
maisonettes and 10 artists studios.”
Stephen Owen
Site Manager
Kind & Co (Builders) Limited
Athena Court
“We, at Inis Developments would like
to congratulate Newham Council for
their vision in the planning process
for the land marked site that we are
presently completing on the corner
of Warton Road and High Street
Stratford. Without the help and
enthusiasm of all Newham officials
during the building process we
would have been unable to bring this
project to a successful completion.
A special thanks must go to the
Principle Building Control Surveyor,
whose vast experience and
knowledge was essential throughout
the construction and completion
period of this development”
“Mulalley’s experience with Newham
Building Control on our little Ilford
Development has been extremely positive,
not only have they provided us with a
thorough Building Control/inspection
service they have also turned around
conditional approvals quickly to assist us
to meet our programme deadlines.”
